Prepositions of Place I (In/At/On/Near): I am in the kitchen. Beginner • After this lesson, you will be able to say generally where something is. Exercise 1 Sentence Practice (Prática de frases) • We are at Ellis Island. • The Statue of Liberty is on Ellis Island. • Ellis Island is in New York. • Ellis Island is near Manhattan. Grammar Focus (Foco em Gramática) • This lesson introduces prepositional phrases: phrases that start with a preposition and end with a place. at home ('at' = preposition. 'home' = place) in the kitchen ('in' = preposition. 'the kitchen' = place) • Prepositional phrases are a kind of Subject Complement in the SVC sentence pattern: I am at home. ('I' = subject, 'am' = verb, 'at home' = complement) He is in the kitchen. ('He' = subject, 'is' = verb, 'in the kitchen' = complement) • In [area/space] • Use the preposition 'in' to talk about people/things/animals that are inside an area or space: • The chefs are in their kitchen. • The marketing team is in the meeting room. • Also use 'in' for cities and countries: Janice is in New York. Paul is in China. • At [specific location] • Use the preposition 'at' to talk about locations: • The children are at school. • The woman is at a hospital. • To understand the difference between "at" and "in," compare: The students are at school. They are in a classroom. The chefs are at the restaurant. They are in the kitchen. We also use at to talk about specific times: at noon, at 3 p.m., at sunrise, etc. • On [surface] • Use the preposition 'on' to talk about people/things/animals that are supported by a surface: • The couple is on the bed. • The children are on the floor. • Near • Use the preposition 'near' to talk about people/things/animals that are close to something: • A man is near the swimming pool. Exercise 2 Dialogue Practice (Prática de diálogo) • Read the dialogues aloud with your teacher. Pizza Delivery Waiter: Where are you? Nina: I'm at my office. Waiter: Where is your office? Nina: My office is in the Empire State Building, near Penn Station. Waiter: What floor is your company on? Nina: It's on the 14th floor. Visiting New York Hannah: Where is our hotel? James: Our hotel is in New York, on 7th Avenue. Hannah: Cool. What is our hotel near? James: It's near Times Square. There are many shops in Times Square.
