Quantificadores 
 
Hoje vamos tratar dos quantificadores (quantifiers) many e much. E mais uma vez, 
ressaltar a importância de ter a noção de substantivos contáveis e incontáveis. 
O texto abaixo é uma adaptação ao da profª. Carla Muniz, licenciada em Letras. 
Much e many 
Much e many são quantifiers (quantificadores). Much significa muito ou muita 
e many significa muitos ou muitas. 
Para sabermos quando usar many e much, precisamos verificar se o substantivo ao qual o 
quantificador se refere é countable (contável) ou uncountable (incontável). Isso 
porque many é usado com contáveis e much, com incontáveis. 
Nem tudo que é contável na língua portuguesa é contável na língua inglesa. Por isso, é 
preciso ter cuidado para saber quando usar many ou much. 
Substantivos contáveis e incontáveis 
Um countable noun (substantivo contável) possui uma forma de singular e outra de plural, 
já um uncountable noun (substantivo incontável) só possui a forma de singular. 
A palavra "informação", por exemplo, é contável em português e incontável em inglês. 
Podemos dizer em português “preciso de duas informações”, mas para expressar a mesma 
ideia em inglês, devemos dizer “I need two pieces of information.” 
Sempre que queremos expressar determinada quantidade de uma palavra que é 
incontável em inglês, ela precisa ser acompanhada de algum complemento (no caso 
de information, usamos piece of). 
Quando usar many e much 
Confira a explicação abaixo, saiba quando usar many e much e entenda a diferença entre 
as duas formas. 
Uso de many 
A palavra many é usada com substantivos contáveis e significa muito, muitos, muita ou 
muitas. 
Exemplo: 
 They bought many bottles of soft drink for the party. (Eles compraram muitas 
garrafas de refrigerante para a festa.) 
 
IMPORTANTE: o substantivo usado após a palavra many deve estar sempre flexionado no 
plural. 
 
How many 
Para perguntar a quantidade de algo contável, devemos usar a expressão how many, que 
significa quantos, quantas. 
Exemplo: 
 How many days did you spend in L.A.? (Quantos dias você passou em L.A.?) 
 
Uso de much 
A palavra much é usada com substantivos incontáveis e significa muito ou muita. 
Exemplo: 
 She put much water in the jar. (Ela colocou muita água na jarra.) 
 
IMPORTANTE: o substantivo usado após a palavra much deve estar sempre no singular. 
 
How much 
Para perguntar a quantidade de algo incontável, devemos usar a expressão how much, 
que significa quanto, quanta. 
Exemplo: 
 How much time do we need to get there? (Quanto tempo precisamos para chegar 
lá?) 
 
OBSERVAÇÃO: a expressão how much também significa quanto custa. 
Exemplo: 
 How much is it? (Quanto custa?) 
Dica 
Se tiver dúvidas sobre o uso de many e much, você pode optar por usar a lot of (muito, 
muitos, muita, muitas). 
 
A expressão a lot of pode ser usada tanto com substantivos contáveis, quanto com 
substantivos incontáveis. 
Exemplos: 
 She drinks a lot of coffee every morning. (Ela bebe muito café todas as manhãs.) 
 They have a lot of friends. (Eles têm muitos amigos.)
