03260 - A ARGUMENTAÇÃO

1.
The necessity of replication of each test is an argument against the "methods" mentioned.
The Present Perfect tense would be more suitable in the rst sentence, for it consists of the description of an
area of research that led to the "well-established" method.
The Simple Present tense would be more suitable in both sentences, since they support notions which are
characterized as "well-established".
A future tense would be more adequate for the paragraph, since it argues for the relevance of methods which
will still be expounded later in the paper.
The Simple Past tense is correctly employed since the authors are arguing for the relevance of their
methodology in that specic study.
Data Resp.: 02/09/2023 09:47:16
Explicação:
As Swales and Feak (2004) indicate, authors of academic texts commonly use the past to describe researchers'
actions in single studies. Therefore, "The Simple Past tense is correctly employed since the authors are arguing
for the relevance of their methodology in that specic study".

Love is not love, which alters when it alteration nds. It¿s a beautiful sentiment around which to build a
Shakespearean sonnet, but in real life not everyone adapts to the dramatic changes thrust upon them in a
pandemic with the apparent grace of Kate Garraway. The TV presenter's husband, Derek Draper, almost died of
Covid; he is now back home after months in intensive care, but needs round-the-clock nursing. He can speak, but
can't hold what most people would regard as a conversation. It cannot be the life or the marriage either of them
dreamed of in their early 50s. But as she said hopefully at the weekend, she thinks they have found "a new way to
be in love", a relationship of complete trust and reliance. "That¿s a positive thing to come out of this, to have that
certainty of each other. He and I are very close."
HINSLIFF, Gaby. The pandemic has taught us that love can bend without breaking. Disponível em: The pandemic
has taught us all that love can bend without breaking | Gaby Hinsliff | The Guardian. Acesso em: 15 fev. 2022.
Now, choose the option that best summarizes the strategies employed by the author to attract the readers¿
attention and introduce the topic of the text as a whole:
In the book Academic Writing for Graduate Students by Swales and Feak, three rhetorical moves are identied.
These moves should function as guidelines for the writing of the introduction to argumentative texts as well as the
building up of the thesis statement. Mark the alternative with the adequate description of the third rhetorical
move, according to Swales and Feak:
Topic statements are fundamental for argumentative texts. Mark the alternative that best describes the function
of topic statements:
Hinsliff's introduction analyzes the pros and cons of the circumstances faced by most couples during the
covid-19 pandemic, looking into the advantages and disadvantages of resilience.
Hinsliff promotes a balanced account of the hardships faced by couples during the pandemic, listing reasons
why some couples will not be as resilient as Kate Garraway and Derek Draper.
Hinsliff provides statistics to validate the argument that marital relationships have been put to the test,
showing that even celebrities - such as Kate Garraway, a famous TV presenter - had her marriage challenged
by the hardships posed by covid-19.
Hinsliff turns to characters from Shakespeare's sonnets to prove that "love can bend without breaking" and
couples can make it through the turbulent times imposed by the pandemic.
Hinsliff starts with a quote from a Shakespearean sonnet that endorses the main point of her text, that "love
can bend without breaking", and recurs to the touching story of a resilient couple to conrm her main
argument.
Data Resp.: 02/09/2023 09:47:12
Explicação:
The Shakespearean sonnet touches the heart of the question posed by the author, conrming her thesis that
"love can bend without breaking". Kate Garraway and Derek Draper's experience validates Hinsliff's argument
that love can win the battle against the turmoil imposed by the pandemic.

(1) Establishing a research territory; (2) establishing a niche; and (3) extending previous knowledge.
(1) Outlining the purpose and the nature of the research; (2) announcing its principal ndings; and (3)
indicating the structure of the research paper.
(1) Establishing a research territory; (2) establishing a niche; and (3) occupying the niche.
(1) Attracting the readers' curiosity; (2) summarizing the main point of the research; and (3) making room for
a balanced account of the controversy tackled by your paper.
(1) Indicating a gap in the previous research; (2) raising questions about it; and (3) extending previous
knowledge.
Data Resp.: 02/09/2023 09:47:09
Explicação:
The third rhetorical move aims at occupying the niche dened by the research, by means of outlining the
purpose and nature of the research, announcing its main ndings, and indicating the structure of the research
paper. Therefore, the only correct answer is: "(1) Outlining the purpose and the nature of the research; (2)
announcing its principal ndings; and (3) indicating the structure of the research paper."

Analyze the paragraph below, retrieved from a paper about transcription records in legal contexts. Afterwards,
choose the alternative which best describes the argumentation developed by the authors.
"The fact that records of data as similar as police - suspect and police - witness interviews are produced so
differently, provides us with an ideal context in which to demonstrate the factors at work, and to test our theories
as to how best to approach issues of adequacy and accuracy. However, we envisage that our model can be applied
equally well to written transcripts of spoken data across any context, including our own professional context as
linguists who analyse spoken text. It thereby also illustrates how, by attempting to address a 'real-world' practical
problem, we can in fact learn a great deal about our own methods and academic practices." Retrieved from

There is a wide range of discursive strategies you may put at work to craft the language of your arguments so as to
make them sound more convincing. Mark the option that best explains the deliberate repetition of the verbs "to
teach" and "to learn":
Women are the group most victimized by sexist oppression. As with other forms of group oppression, sexism is
perpetuated by institutional and social structures; by the individuals who dominate, exploit, or oppress; and by the
victims themselves who are socialized to behave in ways that make them act in complicity with the status quo.
Male supremacist ideology encourages women to believe they are valueless and obtain value only by relating to or
bonding with men. We are taught that our relationships with one another diminish rather than enrich our
experience. We are taught that women are 'natural' enemies, that solidarity will bever exist between us because
we cannot, should not, and do not bond with one another. We have learned these lessons well. We must unlearn
them if we are to build a sustained feminist movement. We must learn to live and work in solidarity. We must learn
the true meaning and value of Sisterhood.
Topic statements must summarize the main ideas of a given paragraph or encapsulate the core argument of
the text as a whole.
Topic statements must guarantee the author has the nal word on the matter tackled by the text.
Topic statements must come up with scientic evidence to endorse the author's views.
Topic statements must bring together conicting viewpoints.
Topic statements must defy the validity of the author's own arguments, promoting an unbalanced account of
the controversy portrayed within the text.
Data Resp.: 02/09/2023 09:47:06
Explicação:
Topic statements typically put in a nutshell the core ideas of a given paragraph or the main point of the text as a
whole. The only option that correctly describes their function is: "Topic statements must summarize the main
ideas of a given paragraph or encapsulate the core argument of the text as a whole".

5.
The language structures used by the authors indicate that the text consists of a counter-argumentation
against current academic practices.
The expression "in fact" indicates that the authors merely begged the question instead of arguing for their
thesis.
The author's allusion to their expertise as linguists consists of an appeal to pathos.
The authors resort to a syllogism to argue for the relevance of their study in the eld.
The repetition of the modal verb "can" indicates an overuse of hedging, which makes the paragraph
ambiguous.
Data Resp.: 02/09/2023 09:47:02
Explicação:
Indeed, the proposition defended in the paragraph is based on a major premise (that the data can be applied to
different contexts), a minor premise (it can also be applied in the author¿s context of Linguistics), and on a
conclusion (it can show authors how to deal with their methods). Therefore, it is based on Aristotle¿s syllogism
and its deductive conclusion. The correct answer is then: "The authors resort to a syllogism to argue for the
relevance of their study in the eld."

HOOKS, Bell. "Sisterhood: Political Solidarity Between Women". Feminist Review, n. 23, 1986, p.127.
Choose the option that correctly identies the topic statement of Hinsliff's conclusion:
And yet, at the not-quite-end of it all, here millions of us still are; still together, still faintly dazed by the whole
experience. But perhaps with a new understanding forged in crisis of what long-term love is all about. It¿s not all
Valentine¿s hearts and owers, tables for two and tickets to Paris. It is absolutely about kindness, patience,
tolerance and the ability to pull together as a team in times of unexpected trouble. For love is not always love that
stays rigidly the same when circumstances around it change. Post-pandemic love is perhaps just as often the kind
that good-naturedly adapts, and is exible enough to withstand a shock.

As you have studied, each section of an academic argumentative text has a commonly used structure. Based on
your previous knowledge, choose the most suitable option to describe the following persuasive paragraph,
retrieved from a paper about the notion of smart cities.
"Both concepts have been considered independently in the recent decades - in theoretical and applied literature -
but little attention has been paid so far to the links between them. The research approach of the paper is a
combination of literature review and observation of case studies in Europe." Retrieved from

The author should have chosen synonyms to avoid the unnecessary repetition of words. Such repetitions may
distract the reader and undermine the validity of the writer's main ideas.
Bell hooks deliberately repeats the verbs "to teach" and "to learn" to avoid synonyms that may not make her
point clear enough.
The author repeats the verbs "to teach" and "to learn" because these are fundamental concepts for those
who talk about solidarity in school settings.
Bell hooks purposedly repeats the verbs "to teach" and "to learn" to reiterate that the belief in women¿s
"natural" animosity is socially constructed, collectively learned. Such repetition comes in handy, drawing the
reader's attention to the writer¿s core argument.
Bell hooks repeats these words to emphasize that sisterhood as well as solidarity cannot be learned: they are
naturally inherited and are not transmitted from person to person.
Data Resp.: 02/09/2023 09:46:59
Explicação:
Repetitions must not be dismissed as irrelevant in academic writing. When a word is constantly brought
forward, the writer may desire to reinforce a specic idea so as to endorse his arguments and reiterate his or
her perspective on the matters discussed.

7.
"But perhaps with a new understanding forged in crisis of what long-term love is all about".
"For love is not always love that stays rigidly the same when circumstances around it change".
"It's not all Valentine's hearts and owers, tables for two and tickets to Paris".
"Post-pandemic love is perhaps just as often the kind that good-naturedly adapts, and is exible enough to
withstand a shock".
"It is absolutely about kindness, patience, tolerance and the ability to pull together as a team in times of
unexpected trouble".
Data Resp.: 02/09/2023 09:46:56
Explicação:
The author's nal remarks encapsulate her main point. Therefore, the topic statement is: "Post-pandemic love is
perhaps just as often the kind that good-naturedly adapts, and is exible enough to withstand a shock".
Supporting paragraphs usually initiate with a topic statement, but, in this case, since it refers to the conclusion;
the statement which correctly summarizes the point of the paragraph is the last one.

Read the following excerpt from Paulo Freire's paper entitled "The Importance of the Act of Reading" and choose
the option that best describes the role of this introductory paragraph:
The question of the importance of reading is addressed by considering the ways in which experience itself is read
through the interaction of the self and the world. Through examining memories of childhood, it is possible to view
objects and experiences as texts, words, and letters and to see the growing awareness of the world as a kind of
reading through which the self learns and changes. The actual act of reading literary texts is seen as one aspect of
the act of knowing and as a creative act. Reading the world thus precedes reading the word and writing a new text
must be seen as one means of transforming the world.
FREIRE, Paulo. "The Importance of the Act of Reading". The Journal of Education, v. 165, n. 1, p. 5-11.
Establishing a research territory is a fundamental move when writing a research paper, for it identies the sphere
of human knowledge circumscribing any given study. Read the introductory paragraphs below:
Within the feministmovement racial conict between white women and women of colour continues to be one area
of struggle. Often these conicts are so overwhelming that they cause us to despair that we can ever live and work
together in social spaces that are not irrevocably tainted by politics of domination. Since energy wanes and hope
diminishes it is absolutely necessary for feminist activists to renew our commitment to political struggle and
strengthen our solidarity. This means that we must work with greater diligence to confront racism and the conicts
that it engenders with the conviction that sustained committed struggle will lead towards a liberatory feminist
political agenda.
hooks, bell. "Sisterhood: Political Solidarity Between Women". Feminist Review, n. 23, 1986.
This extract is suitable for a section of Methodology, since it argues for the data generated by the researchers
in question.
The allusion to "case studies" was part of the literature review mentioned in the rst sentence.
The authors state the relevance of their research by arguing against the validation of the "concepts"
mentioned.
The structure "attention has been paid to¿" supports the prestige of published literature in the area.
In this paragraph the authors review previous literature and establish a niche to be occupied by their
investigation.
Data Resp.: 02/09/2023 09:46:53
Explicação:
The structure "but little attention has been paid so far to¿" is indicative of aws in previous works that need to
be addressed by the article, justifying its development and publication. The correct answer is then: "In this
paragraph the authors review previous literature and establish a niche to be occupied by their investigation".

9.
It briey discusses how reading has been traditionally taught and understood, analyzing the act of reading
from a conventional perspective.
It undermines traditional perspectives on reading by refuting that such act results from the interaction of the
self and the world.
By describing how the author himself understands reading, it also summarizes the core idea of the text.
It focuses on denying that reading includes "reading the word", dening the act instead as the "reading of the
world".
It delineates the focus of previous research on reading, outlining information that the author will refute in the
upcoming paragraphs.
Data Resp.: 02/09/2023 09:46:50
Explicação:
As introductions are supposed to, Paulo Freire's introductory paragraph provides the reader with a succinct
overview on the topic his text discusses: the importance of the act of reading, understood here as a complex
process that involves reading the world before reading the word. The correct option is thus: "By describing how
the author himself understands reading, it also summarizes the core idea of the text".

Establishing her research territory at the very onset of her text, hooks uses her introduction to:
Provide a balanced account of the controversy her text aims at tackling.
Indicate that there is a gap in the previous research.
Undermine the arguments of those who oppose academic research on feminism.
Demonstrate the questions should be raised to extend previous knowledge.
Show that the general research area is central, interesting, and problematic.
Data Resp.: 02/09/2023 09:46:46
Explicação:
Authors typically establish their own research territory when 1) they show that the general research area is
central, interesting and problematic and/ or 2) when they introduce and review previous research in the area. In
this specic case, her introduction is used to: "Show that the general research area is central, interesting and
problematic".
