Car sales fell 26.6% and production dropped 22.8% in 2015 Car sales fell 26.6% in 2015, when 2.57 million units were sold. In 2014, 3.50 million units had been sold. According to data released Thursday (Jan. 7) in São Paulo by the National Association of Vehicle Manufacturers (ANFAVEA), in December 2015, 227,800 units were traded, 16.7% more than in November (195,200). Compared with December 2014, when 370,000 vehicles had been sold, there was a drop of 38.4%. In 2015, production fell 22.8% (2.43 million) compared with the previous year, when production reached 3.15 million. In December 2015, 142,900 units were produced, compared with December 2014 (204,000), there was a drop of 30.0%. "Sales in 2015 are equivalent to 2007, which means that they had an eight-year decrease in trading. The drop of nearly 48% in the truck segment and almost 39% in the buses segment attracted attention. This year has not been positive due to political issues that have influenced a lot the consumer's confidence and highly contaminated the economy," said ANFAVEA's President Luiz Moan. In 2015, 416,900 units have been exported, up 24.8% compared with the previous year, when 334,200 units were sold in foreign markets. In figures, however, exports declined 8.7% in the year reaching $10.4 million. "The drop in values happened for a mix [of reasons], because we export [vehicle] parts for a higher price than we had in 2014." said Moan. According to him, the sector closed the year with 130,000 direct employees, down 10.2% compared with 2014. "We are between 2009 and 2010, clearly demonstrating the industry's concern for maintaining the highest level of employment, which we consider fundamental. For that reason, we sought throughout the year to approve an additional protection [for the employee], the Employment Protection Program (PPE), which we have been using the most. To get an idea, we closed the year with 5,100 employees on lay-off and 35,600 in PPE." ANFAVEA estimates that in 2016 production will become stable, growing 0.5%, while domestic sales may fall 7.5% and exports of vehicle units increase 8.1% (light commercial vehicles, 7.7%; and heavy vehicles, 12.4%). Observe a seguir uma lista de palavras e expressões normalmente empregadas em contextos que envolvem o aumento ou a diminuição de dados numéricos: Verbs and phrases to increase to rise to grow (noun: growth) to surge to soar to jump to bounce to leap to go up to climb to decrease to drop to dip to decline to fall to plunge to plummet to go down to sink to become stable to remain stable to stabilize to maintain As metáforas e a construção de sentido Note que, para evitar a repetição de palavras como aumentar e diminuir, usamos palavras com sentido metafórico como em “as vendas dispararam” ou “o preço das ações despencou”. Observe: The sales increased. (verb) There was an increase in the sales. (noun) O seguinte vocabulário também é usado para descre- ver tendências ou trends: to exceed, to surpass exceder, ultrapassar, superar to remain low continuar baixo, manter-se baixo to remain high continuar alto, manter-se alto to peak, to reach a peak atingir um pico, atingir o ponto mais alto to speed up aumentar a velocidade, acelerar to slow down diminuir a velocidade Alguns advérbios também podem ser usados com ver- bos como “to increase” e “to decrease”. Observe: a. My girlfriend and I have had our ups and downs. b. — How’s your new job? — With ups and downs. Observe: c. The Brazilian families’ main concern nowadays is to keep up with the Joneses. A Housing Meltdown Looms in Brazil as Builders Seek Debt Relief by Julia Leite and Paula Sambo August 26, 2015 Not long ago, Brazil’s real-estate market was one of the biggest symbols of the country’s burgeoning economic might. Now, it’s fallen victim to an ever-deepening recession. PDG Realty SA, once the largest homebuilder by revenue, hired Rothschild last week to help restructure 5.8 billion reais ($1.6 billion) of debt after second-quarter net sales sank 88 percent. Earlier this month, Rossi Residencial SA, which has 2.5 billion reais in debt, also brought in advisers to “restructure operations and review strategies.” Since 2010, the builder has lost 99 percent of its stock-market value. The real-estate industry, which is equal to about 10 percent of Brazil’s economy, is emerging as one of the latest casualties of a recession that analysts forecast will be its longest since the 1930s. To make matters worse, interest rates are the highest in almost a decade while inflation is soaring. “There is no real estate company that survives without sales,” Bruno Mendonça Lima de Carvalho, the head of fixed income at Guide Investimentos SA, said from Sao Paulo. “You can’t import or export apartments. You’re relying solely on domestic activity.” PV_2021_L2_ING_FU_CAP24_LA.INDD / 29-01-2021 (14:22) / FABRICIO.REIS3 / PROVA FINAL PV_2021_L2_ING_FU_CAP24_LA.INDD / 29-01-2021 (14:22) / FABRICIO.REIS3 / PROVA FINAL LÍNGUA INGLESA Capítulo 24 Ups and downs 60 PDG tried to boost revenue by lowering prices, financing up to 20 percent of some home purchases and even offering to buy back apartments if banks deny financing. Still, it sold just 217 units in the second quarter on a net basis, compared with 1749 in 2014. Negative Outlook On Friday, Moody’s Investors Service cut PDG’s rating three levels to Caa3, citing the possibility of significant losses for bondholders and other lenders. Secured creditors may recover less than 80 percent in a default, according to Moody’s, which kept a negative outlook on the rating. “The company is facing additional liquidity pressures from a prolonged deterioration in industry dynamics, including weak sales speed, tight financing availability and declining real estate prices,” Moody’s said. Sao Paulo-based Rossi said in an e-mailed response to questions that second quarter sales improved and that the company’s main focus is to reduce debt. Gross debt fell about 30 percent in the 12 months ended in June, Rossi said. Home sales in Latin America’s biggest economy tumbled 14 percent in the first half of 2015, according to data from the national real estate institute. Builders cut new projects by 20 percent during that span, while available financing shrank by about a quarter. Real’s Collapse That’s a reversal from just two years ago, when real- estate prices in places like Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo had surged as much as 230 percent as rising incomes, a soaring real and record-low borrowing costs ignited a wave of home buying. Brazilians find themselves in drastically different circumstances today. The currency fell 0.4 percent Wednesday as of 3:25 p.m. in New York, extending its loss this year to 26 percent. The jobless rate climbed to a five-year high of 7.5 percent last month. The central bank boosted its key rate to 14.25 percent in July, making it ever more expensive to finance the purchase of a home. “It’s a matter of demand, and demand is really weak,” Will Landers, who manages Latin American stocks at BlackRock, said from Princeton, New Jersey. “We may have reached a peak in interest rates, but they should continue to be at these levels for a while. Consumers will stay on the sidelines because debt levels are still high, and employment will get worse.” (Business Week at www.bloomberg.com/news. Adapted) 1 FGV 2016 The third paragraph implies that: A with the high interest rates prevailing in the country, most people can’t buy real estate. b the present inflation rate has not been experienced in Brazil since the first half of the twenty century. c the real-estate industry is not dealing in the exporting market due to the high inflation rates Brazil is currently going through. d when the domestic market is not operating properly, the real-estate industry should aim at the foreign markets. E the real-estate industry as a whole in Brazil has sold less than 300 properties in the first half of the current year of 2015. 5 FGV 2016 Two years before the article was written, sales in real estate were high due to a few different reasons, among which was/were A Brazilian currency devaluation. b 230% rise in most people’s income. c boost of Central Bank key rate. d low interest rates from banks. E climbing number of jobless individuals.
