Pickleball mania has taken over
the United States. The Sports &
Fitness Industry Association called
pickleball the fastest-growing sport
in the U.S. About 5 million people
were playing it in 2021. That’s
nearly twice as many as in
2019.
Pickleball is like tennis
and ping-pong. It’s easy to
learn. “Someone could learn in
30 minutes or less,” Jim Berger
says. He’s a director for U.S.A.
Pickleball. That group helps
promote the growth of the sport.
Many people make friends
playing pickleball. “It affects my
relationship with my classmates,”
says Elizabeth Pavon, 11. She
learned the sport in gym class.
“It helps us get more together.”
Pickleball has even become
a professional sport. The
Professional Pickleball
Association holds national
tournaments. So does Major
League Pickleball. The sport
could become an Olympic event.
Olivia Sutton, 15, plans to go pro.
She says, “I feel like everybody
who plays [pickleball] falls in love
with it.” —By Brian S. McGrath

The automaker BMW showed off its color-changing
car at CES. That’s a technology show. It took place
in Las Vegas, Nevada, in January.
The vehicle is electric. It’s called the BMW i
Vision Dee. Dee stands for “Digital Emotional
Experience.” The car can display up to 32 colors.
Drivers can change the colors according to their
mood. The headlights and front can show facial
expressions, such as joy.
The flashy car isn’t the only cool
thing tech companies showed off
at CES. One was a device called
Wehead. It helps people on a video
call appear as though they are there in
3D. And there was a robot called ADAM. It
makes boba, or bubble, tea. Plus, it can dance!
COLORFUL CAR
MESSAGE FROM THE PAST
BY CRISTINA FERNANDEZ
On January 17, archaeologists in
Norway announced a discovery. They
may have found the world’s oldest
rune stone. The flat rock is etched with
runes. These are letters. They’re from
an ancient language. The stone could
have been carved 2,000 years ago.
Not all the markings make sense.
There’s the word Idiberug, for instance.
It could be a name. “This may be one of
the first attempts to use runes in Norway
and Scandinavia on stone,” Kristel
Zilmer says. She’s a professor. She works
at the University of Oslo, in Norway.
Zilmer calls the discovery a
“sensational thing.” The rune stone
is on show for a month. It is at the
Museum of Cultural History, in Oslo.
The runes on this stone may be the oldest example
of this kind of writing.

Ice cream used to be a treat for the wealthy. It wasn’t easy for
everyone else to fi nd. That’s until Augustus Jackson solved this
problem. Ice Cream Man is Jackson’s biography. It was written by
GLENDA ARMAND and KIM FREEMAN. TFK Kid Reporter Mason
Langer spoke with them.
Freeman had the
idea for the book .
“I love ice cream, so
let’s look at its
history,” she told TFK.
The book shows how
Jackson pursued his
interests. The authors
hope kids do too. It
might lead to sweet
success.
Maybe you’ve read Roald Dahl’s Matilda. Maybe
you’ve seen the 1996 movie. Or maybe you’ve
seen the stage musical. Now the magical tale is
steaming on Netflix.
Roald Dahl’s Matilda: The Musical is adapted
from the stage musical. It tells the story
of a young book-lover. She finds her
magic and saves her school from an
evil headmistress. She does it with her
kindly teacher, Miss Honey, at her side.
ALISHA WEIR plays Matilda. “We can
all really take something from Matilda,”
she told TIME for Kids. “You can take
away to be strong like Matilda and have
lots of courage.”
