Importância do Clima para a Humanidade Earth is unique in the solar system, with abundant water; The only Planet, whose water exists in all three states: solid, liquid, and gas; Earth is the only planet with an abundance of life (or, as far as scientists know, with any life). 09/03/2024 6 Importância do Clima para a Humanidade Atmosfera, oceano, e superfície da Terra The atmosphere is not an isolated system. It interacts with other components of the Earth system 09/03/2024 7 Temperatura Atmosférica Temperatura Atmosférica Global distribution of annual mean temperature in the Land Surface [°C] 09/03/2024 8 Composição Atmosférica The composition of the atmosphere is a key determinant of Earth's climate. The interaction of atmospheric gases with radiant energy modulates the flow of energy through the climate system. Dry atmospheric air is composed mostly of molecular nitrogen (78%) and molecular oxygen (21%). The atmospheric gases that are important for the absorption and emission of radiant energy comprise less than 1 % of the atmosphere's mass. Composição Atmosférica 09/03/2024 9 Balanco Hidrostático The atmosphere is composed of gases held close to the surface of the planet by gravity. The vertical forces acting on the atmosphere at rest are gravity and the pressure force. These forces are in balance to a very good approximation, and by equating the pressure gradient force and the gravity force one obtains the hydrostatic balance. Humidade Atmosférica Atmospheric humidity is the amount of water vapor carried in the air. The atmosphere is the smallest reservoir of water on the planet Earth, containing only 0.001% of the total mass of water present. However, the effect of the water present in the atmosphere is by no means small. 09/03/2024 10 Os oceanos no Mundo Earth contains about 1.35 x lo9 km3 of water, of which about 97% is seawater. A criosfera All of the ice near the surface of Earth is called the cryosphere. About 2% of the water on Earth is frozen, and this frozen water constitutes about 80% of the freshwater. Most of the mass of ice is contained in the great ice sheets of Antarctica (89%) and Greenland (8.6%). 09/03/2024 11 A superfície terrestre The land surface plays a lesser role in the global climate system than the atmosphere or the ocean. The climate over the land surface is extremely important to us because humans are land-dwelling creatures. Over the land surface, temperature and soil moisture are key determinants of natural vegetation and the agricultural potential of a given area. Vegetation, snowcover, and soil conditions also affect the local and global climate. Remarks The planet Earth is a marvelous place: a place with blue skies, wild storms, deep lakes, and rich and diverse ecosystems. Understand climate it is necessary to have a basic understanding of several scientific fields and to be aware of how these fields are interconnected. The planet is changing fast and people are the primary cause. Understand how human activities disrupt those processes and use that knowledge to predict ways that changes in one system will affect seemingly unrelated systems.
