W ho le C hi ld C ou ns el in g Perspective taking This blog post has video suggestions on kindness, caring, inclusion and empathy. https://www.wholechildcounseling.com/post/activities-and-videos-to-teach-theory-of-mind-and-perspective-taking-skills-to-children Using a data log W ho le C hi ld C ou ns el in g I use the following simple system to record my data on a data log. I tweak it for whole group or individual sessions. At the top I write down the skill or objective we are targeting, along with the date. For group work I will then write each child’s name in the left hand column. For individual work, I just do one sheet per child. If a child answers correctly, I place a check mark next to their name. If a child answers correctly with assistance, for example, if they ask for help (which we often encourage children to do if they feel stuck) I underline the check mark next to their name. If a child answers incorrectly, I put an X in the next to their name. And if a child did not answer, I put a question mark next to their name. I can then tally the number correct out of the total number to calculate a fraction or percentage. When you writegoals it is helpful to start with the end in mind and work backwards. Think: what do you want this child to realistically achieve in one year? You can then write multiple objectives for each goal area. I typically write 3-4 objectives for each goal area, but this can vary based on the child’s needs. Here is an example of a goal focused on social skills with S.M.A.R.T. objectives. The objectives build upon each other over time to help add up to the larger longer-term goal. Looking for more objectives? Check out this book I wrote! https://www.wholechildcounseling.com/goals-objectives-treatment-plan-iep W ho le C hi ld C ou ns el in g More Ideas: • Use optical illusions to show children how two or more people can look at the same object, and see something different. • Take an unknown object and use your imagination to see how many different ways children can come up with a new ideas for what it might be. • Look at a picture and name two or more different thoughts the person in the picture may be having. • When reading books or watching shows, pause to reflect on how the different characters are each having different thoughts, intentions, and feelings. • Make “body language sculptures” by thinking of a feeling and then posing your face and body in that way. The other people guess what the feeling is. • Place an object in a box, (or use Ned from What’s in Ned’s Head) and have the kids put their hand in and feel around to guess what the object is without looking at it. They’ll have to practice thinking about others and respectfully disagreeing with one another for this game. https://amzn.to/3LjDj6l https://amzn.to/3cY970O • The purchase of this product by Whole Child Counseling is a limited license for your single classroom/counseling use.
