The structure of the Bible (4 contents) Pillar 4. The Bible is the book of covenant between God & His chosen people Pillar 4. The Bible is the book of covenant between God & His chosen people Bible: Old Testament & New Testament ▪ Bible = book of covenant With who? Ps 89:3 God makes covenant with chosen ppl You said, "I have made a covenant with my chosen one, I have sworn to David my servant, ▪ Bible ≠ history or archeology of the world = history of God’s chosen ppl & covenant *Testament: will, promise (covenant) *Does God only love chosen ppl? 1 Tim 2:3 God want everyone to be saved *Why two covenants? Heb 8:7 First covenant : broken -> New covenant For if there had been nothing wrong with that first covenant, no place would have been sought for another. *Understanding Covenants 1) Who (subject) 2) What (contents) 3) How 4) Result makes covenant => Keep or X Keep (Deu 28:1~14/:15~68 blessings or curses) God choose ppl Deu 28:15 Curses for disobedience However, if you do not obey the Lord your God and do not carefully follow all his commands and decrees I am giving you today, all these curses will come on you and overtake you: Deu 28:1~3 Blessings for obedience If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. All these blessings will come on you and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God: 1) Who? God & I.S (descendants of Ab) *Why God chose Israelites? Dt 7:6~7 fewest of all For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession. The LORD did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples. 1 Cor 1:26~29 foolish, weak, lowly Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things--and the things that are not--to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. 2) What? ①Moses’ law Ex 19:5~6 If you keep (conditional promise) -> Kingdom of priests Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.' These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites." Ex 20~23 10 commandments #1. “You shall have no other gods before me” 3) How? Ex 24:5~8 through the blood Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it to the people. They responded, "We will do everything the LORD has said; we will obey." Moses then took the blood, sprinkled it on the people and said, "This is the blood of the covenant that the LORD has made with you in accordance with all these words.“ Lev 17:11 blood: life For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one's life. 4)Result - ① Ex 32: made golden calf (Apis) 1Kng 11: Solomon : broke the covenant ②Prophecy about Messiah (1st coming of Jesus) 4)Result - ② Jn 1:11 His own X receive He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him Acts 13:27 X know the words of prophecy For those who dwell in Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they did not know Him, nor even the voices of the Prophets which are read every Sabbath, have fulfilled them in condemning Him. Mt 8:11~12 subject of KoH -> thrown outside I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.“ ▪ O Keep: Blessing (be with God) X Keep: Judgement (become gentile / God left) 1) Who? God/Jesus & Christians :12~13 Israelites X, Who believe in Jesus (Christians) Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God--children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God. 2) What? ①Perfect law that gives freedom (law of liberty) Mt 5~6 beatitudes Mt 22:36~40 greatest command: Love "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." ②2nd coming of Jesus Jn 14:2~3 Jesus will come back 3) How? Lk 22:20 New covenant with Jesus’ blood In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. Heb 8:10~12 put God’s law in our mind and heart -> sin forgiven This is the covenant I will establish with the people of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. ...for I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.” 4) Result ▪ O Keep: Blessing (be with God) ▪ X Keep: Judgement (become gentile / God left) Rv 21:8 unbelieving -> burning sulfur But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.” Rv 21:3~4 God & Jesus come to his ppl And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away." "Behold, I am coming soon! Blessed is he who keeps the words of the prophecy in this book.“ -Rv 22:7-
