PRESENTED BY
When you’re an editor at a decorating magazine, you can’t
help but take your work home with you. After hours, I rearrange
things on my coffee table and shop for pillows for my sofa—
basically whe very whings I wriwe abouw aw whe office. And I’m
not the only one. All of us here really do practice what we
preach! So for this special Makeover Issue, we teamed up with
Sherwin-Williams on a fun challenge: What kind of wow-worthy
transformation could we each pull off with a single can of paint?
Check out our befores to the right, then open the page to see
the afters! When the last coat was dry and we were all done with
our projects, we realized that paint doesn’t just change the color
of something, it changes how you feel in a space. And for us,
that’s the magic of a great makeover.
My Entry
“That soft neutral look
was pretty but I craved a
dramatic change, like the
decorating equivalent of
getting bangs. A deep
billiard-table green did the
trick and feels both on trend
and timeless. It not only
woke up the space, it also
energized me. When I come
home, I feel like I’m stepping
into a whole new place!”

“My first thought was to go with
a super-bold color, like a fire-
engine red or an electric yellow,
but we already have bright red
chairs in this dining room (plus, I
didn’t want the piano to look like
a toy!). I landed on this grayish
blue from Sherwin-Williams, and
I love it so much I’m thinking
about using it on a wall upstairs!”

PAINT PICK:
“Yellow is my favorite color, so this
sunny shade was an easy choice.
It’s bright, it covers up scuffs, and
true to its name, it’s a cheerful
addition to the yard! Since the
warm undertones complement
the wood trim, I left it natural
and used an angled brush (the
Purdy XL Pro 1") for a clean
line. Watson approved!”

“This rich red gave our door a

When I was little and would
imagine the house I’d want to

“Painting the interior created
the perfect backdrop for my
favorite pieces: Everything
pops against this saturated teal!
I pulled the color from the photo

Help! I Wrecked
My House
Jasmine Roth continues saving the day
for homeowners who’ve failed at DIY
jobs, but this time she’s in a new state.
She opens up about moving her show
(and her family!) to Park City, UT.
How do you feel
going into season 5?
I feel nervous! This was a
huge move for our family
and I’m definitely not as
established as I was in
Southern California. I still
need to build my team.
What are the biggest
challenges so far?
The weather.Construction
in snow is hard!
Worst homeowner
mistake we’ll see:
All the wrecks are major,
but kitchen tile installed with
a hot-glue gun may take
the cake!
What are you most
excited about?
I can’t wait to share my
daughter Darla with all of
you! She was 6 months old
when we started filming. She
and Hazel (who’s 5 now, can
you believe it?) are my world!
Mika and Brian are back for season 7,
building in their beloved Tampa. Here
are some facts about the city.
Tampa calls itself the birthplace of
the Cuban sandwich!
It boasts the longest continuous
sidewalk in the world—4.5 miles.
It’s nicknamed “Cigar City” (the area
once had more than 200 cigar factories).
Pirate treasure is buried in one of
the bays (so we hear!).
It’s the lightning capital of North
America—which explains the hockey
team’s name, the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Remembering
HGTV’s
Loren Ruch
Loren was a creative force and the soul of HGTV:
As the head of home content, he spent two decades behind
the scenes and had his fingerprints on the network’s most
celebrated shows, like My Lottery Dream Home and Property
Brothers. If you recognize a star, chances are Loren championed
them. He had an extraordinary ability to spot talent and bring
out the best in everyone around him (he even helped us launch
this magazine in 2011). He passed away in June but his legacy
lives on in every show, every friendship, and every person lucky
enough to have crossed his path.

 how is it?
Experts answer the questions that stump us all!
how bad is it to sneak a taste
at the farmers’ market?
Growers often offer samples to encourage a sale, but don’t
assume that “try before you buy” applies to everything on the
stand. Farmers’ markets may seem laid-back but they’re still a
business. If you wouldn’t do it at the grocery store, don’t do it there!
T T A !
how bad is it to wash
a cast-iron skillet?
While you should never leave a cast-iron skillet
soaking or put it in the dishwasher, you can
and should wash it! Use warm water, a little
dish soap, and a gentle brush. Dry the pan
completely so it doesn’t rust, then use a paper
towel to lightly coat it with oil.
T A AT ALL!
how bad is it
to put backpacks on
the kitchen counter?
A study last year found hundreds of
thousands of germs on backpacks
(as many as you’d find on a toilet seat or
garbage bin in some cases!). You should
never set anything on your counter that
was on the floor—those germs could
easily transfer to your food.

how bad is it
to drink from a
chipped glass?
As soon as you notice a
crack, take the glass to the
recycling bin. Even a hairline
fracture could put you at risk
for ingesting a shard of glass,
and that little crack is likely
to get bigger over time.
S A !
how bad is it
to kill a spider?
If you spot one in a corner,
leave it be! The ones lurking
around your house are like
your own personal army of
pest dghters: They eat bugs.
Plus, spiders living in your home
are likely not poisonous. If the
idea of arachnid roommates
gives you the creeps, shepherd
them safely outside in a glass jar.
A A !
how bad is it
to leave your
leaves?
Skipping your fall cleanup
can actually help your lawn:
 Grass gets nutrients from
decomposing leaves. Just
don’t let them really pile up.
A thin layer that allows sunlight
and oxygen to reach the soil is
ideal. You can mow over them to
break them into smaller pieces,
which will look neater—and
satisfy your neighbors.
T S A !
how bad is it to use a stick
from the woods to toast
marshmallows?
You won’t dnd a perfectly clean stick in the woods, but
don’t let that stop you from s’mores-ing. Before putting
a marshmallow on the end, remove pieces of loose
bark with your hand, shake off any actual dirt, then
twirl it through the flames a few times. The heat will
burn off anything you wouldn’t want to eat.

Paint all the doors.
Doors are a fun and unexpected place to
play with color. Designers Robin Heller and
Jen Levy chose a bright color combo for
three doors in this Baltimore home. The
hallway was dark, with limited natural light,
and the paint really made the space more
joyful, they say. Doors are a high-touch
surface, so choose paint in a durable, easy-
to-clean finish, like a gloss.
Go all in and choose a
color combo that will really
pop, like this happy trio.
Start with a favorite color,
then select two other shades
in the same family.
The warm undertones
of these soft pastels mix
well together.

A blended North Carolina family
makes their home bigger and better.
ome matches are just meant to be—like Liz Reece and
Rawley Fuller, and the house that brought them together.
A few years back, Rawley, a divorced dad, was working
with designer Michelle Palmer Murphy on a refresh of his
1970s ranch in Chapel Hill, NC. Michelle had a feeling he and
her project manager, Liz, would be perfect for each other, so she
sent Liz to the site on a made-up measuring errand. It worked:
The two hit it off, and a year later, they were engaged, living
together, and raising their blended family of six—Rawley’s kids,
Izzy and Trent (now 19 and 17), and Liz’s, Van and Montgomery
(now 19 and 15). “It was a tight squeeze at first!” Liz says. They
decided to expand the home and called the woman who made
all of this happen: Michelle! She added a second floor with four
bedrooms and helped blend Rawley’s modern coastal style with
Liz’s glamorous touch. “We’re so sentimental about this house,”
says Liz. “We never want to leave.”
The family added
a second floor
and brightened
the exterior with
white stucco.

The Art of
B
randi Underhill has been
studying fine art since she was
young, so when she started
a massive redesign of her
6,114-square-foot Tudor revival, she thought
of the place as one big canvas. “I’ve been
dreaming of creating a home like this
for decades,” she says. “I love all types of
art, especially pieces that are bright and
colorful, and I wanted this house to have
that same sense of joy.” Brandi, who now
works in healthcare, and her husband,
Justin, a media executive, hired designer
Jewel Marlowe to execute her vision on
the Bethesda, MD, home and give it a touch
of glamour—with a lot of color. “We based
most rooms on just one or two special
items,” Brandi says. “And like any incredible
piece of art, the house has plenty of
unexpected details!”

so Robert Lee

says Robert, who brought in

modernize the space. They

Robert, an engineer, helped

1. Make the compote: Put the prunes and tea bags in a heatproof bowl, cover with
1 cup boiling water, and let soak 20 minutes. Discard the tea bags.
2. Transfer the prunes and soaking liquid to a small saucepan. Add the sugar, salt,
vanilla seeds and pod, lemon zest, and cognac and cook over medium heat until
syrupy, 10 to 15 minutes. Add the apples and pears and reduce the heat to low;
cover and simmer until tender, about 15 minutes. Transfer to a bowl and let cool.
Cover and chill at least 2 hours or up to 1 week.
3. Make the Dutch baby: Preheat the oven to 425̊ . Melt the butter in a 12-inch cast-
iron skillet over medium heat. Remove from the heat and transfer 2 tablespoons of
the melted butter to a blender. Add the eggs, salt, and half-and-half and blend until
combined. Add the flour and blend until smooth, then blend in the orange zest,
orange juice, and almond extract.
4. Heat the skillet with the butter over medium-high heat and swirl to coat. Add
the batter, transfer to the oven, and bake until puffed and golden, 15 to 20 minutes.
Reheat the compote; discard the lemon zest and vanilla pod. Dust the Dutch baby
with confectioners’ sugar and serve with the compote.

About My House
BUILT IN: c. 1890
BOUGHT FOR: $100,000 in 2000
HOMEOWNER: Michele C. Burch
BACKSTORY: The house was originally
clapboard, but in the mid 1940s the owner covered it in
granite he brought home from the quarry where he worked.
BIGGEST CHALLENGE: When I bought the house, it didn’t
have a kitchen—no cabinets, no sink, just a concrete floor—
so I was able to get a deal. But the outside always had a lot
of charm.
FUTURE PLANS: The landscaping is a work in progress!

About Our House
BUILT IN: 2004
BOUGHT FOR: $450,000 in 2005
HOMEOWNERS: Sean and Kerry Hogan
SELLING POINT: The home’s curb appeal
is what originally drew us in. All we had to do was paint!
FAVORITE FEATURE: I love the custom trim around the gable.
It was duplicated from a classic design we found in a book
about Victorian homes.
BOLDEST MOVE: We painted two colors, white and indigo
blue, around the windows. It’s a feature we saw on a number
of old houses in town. It feels classic yet modern.

pumpkins
all the pretty
Pumpkins don’t need spooky faces to make a statement.
With their striking shapes, rich colors, and natural charm,
these fall staples are showstoppers on their own. Check out
some stunning varieties, then find clever ways to style them
on a porch or entryway. Don’t worry about spoilage:
We included tips for making them last all season!
WRITTEN BY ERIN ZAMMETT RUDDY
the pick of the patch
Look out for these special varieties.
miss sophie pink
Pink pumpkins have become all
the rage, especially these little
ones. They’re 4 to 5 inches in
diameter, with a long ornamental
stem and a cheery rosy hue.
puccini
Most of these palm-size
pumpkins have light yellow
skin with dark yellow stripes.
They’re ideal for popping atop
other pumpkins.
speckled hound
These midsize rustic beauties
grow pale orange or salmon pink
with streaks of green and cream.
They’ll add an organic, muted
vibe to any stoop.
tristar
Named for its three-lobed
triangular shape (it’s also called a
“shamrock pumpkin”), this variety
can grow up to 8 pounds. It’ll give
your display a ghoulish touch!
white gold
This classic-shaped pumpkin
has a completely white surface,
and lightly ribbed skin—perfect
for painting or standing out
among more colorful varieties.
rouge vif d’étampes
With its vibrant orange-red skin
and flat shape, this one realli pops
on a porch. It’s also known as the
Cinderella pumpkin because it
resembles the one in the fairy tale.
kamo kamo
This traditional heirloom variety
from New Zealand has a striking
two-color palette. It can grow to
almost the size of a volleyball and
is either round or oval.
peanut
The wart-like bumps on this
neutral-hued pumpkin look like
peanut shells, hence the name.
A few of these will help make a
display look creepy-chic.
mint prince
These mottled, light green
statement pumpkins are compact
(only 8 to 10 inches in diameter),
and thei’re nice and flat, which
makes them great for stacking.

Here are six ways to step up your pumpkin porch display.
PAINT THEM
Apply acrylic or
spray paint in a variety
of shades (no need for
oranges), then arrange
in a rainbow or ombré
pattern. Add in a
metallic for sparkle!

 CHOOSE A GOOD VARIETY.
No matter the size of your display, be
sure to incorporate different shapes,
sizes, colors, and textures.
 START WITH THE BASICS.
I love to begin my designs with
traditional orange jack-o’-lantern
pumpkins and build from there.
 CREATE HEIGHT.
If you don't have steps, add bales of hay
to vary the height of your design.
 SHOW OFF YOUR
STATEMENT PUMPKINS.
Position your specialty pumpkins
carefully so the best parts are showing,
like in the photo above. Sometimes,
turning them on their sides is the best
way to highlight the shapes and stems.
 ADD THE FINISHING TOUCH.
Smaller gourds (like pie pumpkins, mini
pumpkins, and other decorative ones)
are the “cherries” on top. They add
color and texture and fill in any holes.

A combo of

MAKE YOUR PUMPKINS LAST
POP ONE IN
A PLANTER
They make fun and
festive toppers to fall
pots and can cover
drooping plants. Design by
EAB Designs
GO ALL WHITE
Neutral pumpkins always
look sophisticated,
especially when shown
in clusters. More is more
with this approach!
 CHOOSE
WISELY
Pick pumpkins
that are firm
with no sign of
bruising, soft
spots, or cuts.
Make sure you
don’t drop or ding
them in transit:
These openings
will create easy
access points
 for rot.
 CLEAN THE
SURFACE
Wash pumpkins
with warm
water and mild
soap to remove
dirt. You can also
wipe them with
a diluted bleach
solution (1 part
bleach to 10
parts water) to
kill bacteria and
mold.
WARD OFF
PESTS
Spray the
surfaces
with a mix of
peppermint soap
and peppermint
oil to deter
animals from
taking a bite.
Place pumpkins
on some cloth to
keep moisture
from seeping in.
