Episode 15 A Night Out PART 1 1 OUTSIDE A TALL BUILDING—LATE AFTERNOON 2 Alberto and Rebecca look up at a new, relatively tall building. 3 ALBERTO You see that building. . . I was part of a team of architects that designed it. 4 REBECCA Really? That’s very impressive. 5 ALBERTO Thank you. It was a challenge. We had to design it to withstand earthquakes. 6 REBECCA It must be a little nerve-racking to live with the threat of earthquakes. 7 ALBERTO Yes and no. Most of the time you don’t even think about it. But then the next 8 little tremor comes along and you think it’s the big one. 9 REBECCA Oh, great! 10 ALBERTO Don’t worry…I promise…no earthquakes…tonight…So, are you ready 11 for your next San Francisco treat? 12 REBECCA Mm-hm. 13 ALBERTO Yeah? OK. 14 THE PALACE OF FINE ARTS 15 Rebecca and Alberto walk around this San Francisco park. 16 REBECCA This place is magnificent. 17 ALBERTO It’s the Palace of Fine Arts. 18 They enter the rotunda. 19 ALBERTO It was built in 1915 as the centerpiece of the Panama-Pacific Exposition. 20 REBECCA I’ve never seen anything like this before. 21 ALBERTO Yeah. It’s a fine example of neoclassical architecture. . . Oh, I’ve got a surprise 22 for you. Listen. Hello! Hello!!! 23 His voice echoes. 24 REBECCA Oh, listen to that echo. What a great place to record a song. Maybe I’ll come 25 back here some day and record one of my own songs. 26 ALBERTO You know, I’ve never heard you sing. Would you sing for me? 27 REBECCA You don’t want me to sing here. 28 ALBERTO Yes, right here. 29 REBECCA Well, I don’t have my guitar... 30 ALBERTO Just…just a little song. 31 Rebecca sings a simple lullaby. Alberto enjoys the song. 32 REBECCA (singing) Go to sleep 33 The stars are brightly shining 34 Go to sleep 35 The moon is on the rise 36 Our life’s a dream 37 We barely know we’re dreaming 38 ‘Til I see the light that’s shining in your eyes 39 ‘Til I see the light that’s shining in your eyes. 40 ALBERTO You have a lovely voice! 41 REBECCA Thank you. 42 ALBERTO Did you write that song? 43 REBECCA (nods) No, my mother wrote it. I used to sing it to my brother when he was a 44 little boy. 45 ALBERTO Oh. What’s your brother’s name? 46 REBECCA Kevin. 47 ALBERTO Is he younger or older? 48 REBECCA Younger. He just graduated from high school. 49 ALBERTO Are you two close? 50 REBECCA Yeah, very close. Our mother died when we were very young. And I took care of 51 Kevin…until now. 52 ALBERTO Well, your mom left you a beautiful song. 53 They smile at each other. Rebecca nods in agreement. 54 ALBERTO Would you like to see the Golden Gate Bridge? 55 Alberto offers Rebecca his hand. 56 REBECCA Yes. I’d love to. 57 They walk off holding hands. Rebecca’s song is heard in the background. 58 Go to sleep 59 The stars are brightly shining 60 Go to sleep 61 The moon is on the rise 62 Our life’s a dream 63 We barely know we’re dreaming 64 ‘Til I see the light that’s shining in your eyes 65 ‘Til I see the light that’s shining in your eyes. PART 2 66 PIER—SUNSET 67 Alberto and Rebecca are watching the sun go down. 68 REBECCA It’s beautiful. . . the way the light hits the buildings. 69 ALBERTO This is one of my favorite places. 70 REBECCA Do you come here often? 71 ALBERTO As often as I can. 72 The two of them watch the sun as it goes down. Alberto leans over and talks softly to Rebecca. 73 ALBERTO So, are you ready for dinner? 74 REBECCA To tell you the truth, I’m starving. 75 ALBERTO Great. I know this cozy, little restaurant. . . the best food in the city. 76 The two walk off hand in hand. 77 OUTSIDE THE MENDOZA RESTAURANT—NIGHT 78 Atberto has parked the car in front of a restaurant and he and Rebecca are walking toward the door. 79 REBECCA What kind of food do they serve here? 80 ALBERTO Can’t you guess? 81 REBECCA Spanish?…Tex-Mex?… Mexican?… 82 Alberto shakes his head after the first guess; indicates “so-so” after the second; and shows a definite “yes,” 83 after the third. 84 ALBERTO Got it. 85 REBECCA Good, I love Mexican food. 86 MENDOZA RESTAURANT 87 Alberto and Rebecca walk into the restaurant. Immediately, a woman comes out and hugs Alberto. 88 MOTHER !Que sorpresa! No te esperaba por aqui. 89 ALBERTO (He responds to his mother in Spanish.) Déjame presentarte a una amiga. We’ve worked very hard to build a good reputation. . . but soon 109 it will bel6ng to our sons. My wife and I are retiring. 110 ALBERTO You see, my father’s trying to bring me back into the business. . . but I think one 111 son’s enough. 112 FATHER Well, forget about the specials, huh? I recommend the chicken enchiladas. 113 REBECCA That sounds good. I’ll have the chicken enchiladas, please. 114 ALBERTO And I’ll have the chile poblano relleno. 115 FATHER Muy bien. I’ll bring a bottle of wine for the table. 116 REBECCA Great. 117 ALBERTO Thank you. 118 The father goes off, leaving Alberto and Rebecca alone. 119 REBECCA I didn’t expect to meet your parents! 120 ALBERTO Relax. I can tell they like you. 121 REBECCA That’s not the point. 122 Alberto gives Rebecca an amused look. 123 MENDOZA RESTAURANT 124 In another part of the restaurant, Alberto’s mother and father have a private conversation. 125 MOTHER She seems nice, huh? 126 FATHER She’s pretty. 127 MOTHER He always finds the pretty girls, but… 128 FATHER Don’t start again, huh? 129 MOTHER He’s almost thirty years old! PART 3 131 MENDOZA RESTAURANT 132 REBECCA Mm, Alberto, this is delicious. 133 Rarnón Mendoza walks over to the table to greet Alberto and his date. He is a serious, handsome man 134 of thirty-four. 135 ALBERTO Hi there. Rebecca, this is my brother, Ramón. 136 RAMON It’s a pleasure to meet you, Rebecca. (They shake hands.) 117 REBECCA Nice to meet you. 118 ALBERTO Why don’t you pull up a seat? 119 RAMON All right. 140 ALBERTO Ramón runs the business here, for my parents. He’s the dutiful son. 141 RAMON Somebody has to do it. 142 ALBERTO (changing the conversation) Rebecca’s from Boston. She’s here to study at the San 141 Francisco College of Music. 144 RAMON Congratulations! An excellent school, from what I hear . . . You know, I want my 145 son to take music lessons. 146 REBECCA It’s good to start as young as possible. 147 Suddenly, Alherto’s cell phone rings. 145 ALBERTO Excuse me. Hello . . . what? Hold on a minute. (to Rebecca) I’m sorry. It’s . . it’s 149 work. If you’ll excuse me for a minute? 150 REBECCA Sure. 152 RAMON So…you must be excited about going to music school. 153 REBECCA Yes, if I can find a way to pay for it. 154 RAMON Oh. . . is there a problem? 155 REBECCAWell, I was supposed to have a job at school. . .but it fell through because of 156 budget cuts. 157 RAMON So, you’re looking for something else? 158 REBECCA I tried an employment agency and answered some ads, but, no luck... 159 RAMON Maybe you can give guitar lessons to my son, Alex. 160 REBECCA Well, maybe… I did teach some kids in Boston. How old is he? 161 RAMON He’s—he’s ten. (taking a picture out of his wallet) Here’s a picture of him…it’s a 162 little old. 163 REBECCA Oh, he’s adorable. 164 RAMON He’s a good kid. I wish I could spend more time with him but… this restaurant 165 takes up so much of my time... 166 Rebecca looks at Ramón and sees his concern for his son. He puts the picture away. 167 RAMON You know, I just remembered. . . They’re looking for someone at Alex’s after- 168 school program. Maybe you should call the director. 169 REBECCA An after-school program? 170 RAMON Yeah, you know, uh. . . sports, music, arts ‘n’ crafts.. . I’ll give you the director’s 171 name and number. Call her tomorrow. Tell her I recommended you. 172 He takes out a pen and writes down the woman’s name and number. 173 REBECCA Thank you, that’s very nice of you. 174 RAMON Oh, sure. 175 He gives her the card just as Alberto returns. 176 ALBERTO (joking) Ramón! I leave the table for a minute, and you’re giving Rebecca your 177 phone number? 178 RAMON I just had an idea for a job for her. 179 ALBERTO (joking) Yeah, well it wasn’t washing dishes here, was it? 180 RAMON No, I’m saving that for you. 181 ALBERTO Well, I found out I have an early meeting tomorrow morning. . . so I’m afraid it’s 182 gonna have to be an early evening. 183 RAMON If you’ll excuse me, I have things to do in the kitchen. Good talking to you. 184 REBECCA See you. 185 ALBERTO Bye. 186 Ramón leaves. 188 Rebecca and Alberto walk to the front of Nancys house. 189 REBECCA Thank you so much for dinner and the tour. 190 ALBERTO Youre welcome. Im glad you enjoyed it. Ill call you tomorrow or the next day. 191 REBECCA (smiles and nods) Id like that. 192 Alberto leans over and kisses Rebecca on the cheek. Alberto leaves.
