SONY PLANS TO ELIMINATE 20,000 JOBS OVER 3 YEARS
By JAMES BROOKE
PRIVATE "TYPE=PICT;ALT="Published: October 29, 2003
TOKYO, Oct. 28 - In an attempt to achieve a turnaround, the Sony Corporation announced on Tuesday a three-year plan that includes laying off 20,000 workers, ending production of older-model TV sets in Japan, sharply cutting the numbers of parts and suppliers, and starting a joint venture to make flat screens with its archrival, Samsung Electronics of South Korea.
The plan is intended to save $3 billion in annual operating costs by 2006, increasing Sony's profit margins to 10 percent, from a forecast 4 percent this year.
"This is the survival story for Sony," Kun Soo Lee, a consumer electronics analyst at Crédit Lyonnais Securities, said after the company's news conference here. "If we look at Sony's activity in the past, they showed they have speed. They will be competitive again in two years."
The turnaround plan comes as what was once Japan's premier electronics brand struggles with the aftermath of last April's "Sony shock." Lower-than-expected earnings sent Sony stock plunging, helping to pull the Nikkei 225 index to a two-decade low. Although the Nikkei later recovered, Sony's shares have fallen 22 percent this year, making it the third-worst performer on the index.
In contrast, shares of the Matsushita Electric Industrial Company, the world's largest consumer electronics company by sales, have risen 16 percent, propelled largely by the Panasonic brand.
At Tuesday's news conference, audible murmuring rippled through the Japanese press corps when a foreign reporter asked Nobuyuki Idei, Sony's chairman for the last six years, if he should step down.
"Sony is not in red ink, and compared to two years ago, this performance is actually improving," retorted Mr. Idei, his jaw set. Before turning off his microphone with a defiant click, he added: "I am sorry you had to ask that question, which is incomprehensible to me."
Almost 25 years ago, Sony, today the world's second-largest electronics company, became famous in the United States on the wings of its big hit, the Walkman. But Sony has not been able similarly to surf the crest of the new fast-paced electronics market with its Vaio personal computer and Wega TV. The company now heads into the crucial Christmas season with sales soft for its once enormously popular PlayStation 2 video game consoles.
At the news conference, Sony officials preferred to talk about the turnaround plan that emerged from their annual October strategy review session.
No jobs are to be cut in China, which is to become Sony's main manufacturing center in Asia.
Under this strategy, Sony is to end production by March of cathode-ray TV tubes in Japan. Production lines for these central components of traditional television sets are to be cut from 17 today to 5 in 2006.
In general, Sony plans to shift production of cheaper mass market goods to China. Japan would become the company's advance technology base, making such high-value-added goods as semiconductors. Of Sony's job cuts, 7,000 are to be in Japan, largely in manufacturing.
Sony has also designated China as a major target, setting a goal of $4 billion in sales there by 2005. Mr. Idei described sales in China as "explosive."
Looking to the fastest-growing segment of the world television market, Sony announced Tuesday a $2 billion joint venture with Samsung, to produce liquid crystal displays, commonly known as flat-panel screens. With production to start in South Korea in 2005, the 50-50 joint venture would wed Sony, the world's largest producer of televisions, with Samsung, the world's second-largest producer of flat screens.
Demand for flat-panel screens is expected to leap in coming years, from 4 million this year to 14 million in 2005 and to 30 million in 2007, the two companies estimated. The alliance of the two electronics giants to produce seventh-generation flat-panel screens should lead the way toward standardizing the global TV monitor format, the companies said.
"The partnership will enable Samsung to become the top seller of flat panels for televisions," Lee Yoon-Woo, Samsung's president, said at a news conference in Seoul on Tuesday.
With South Korean companies emerging as major rivals to Sony, third-quarter profits at Samsung grew 6.6 percent, and, at LG Electronics, they jumped 93 percent. By contrast, Sony announced last week that its July-September profits fell 25 percent.
