CAPÍTULO XIV: PHRASAL VERBS ( BACK)
A) PEDAGOGICAL FOCUS:
Vamos estar frente a frente da sintaxe geral dos PHRASAL VERBS e neste capítulo com a partícula BACK, aproveitando para observarmos as propriedades da mesma. SUA COMPREENSÃO É ESSENCIAL PARA SE TER UM BOM VOCABULÁRIO DENTRO DO INGLÊS AMERICANO.
B) GRAMMAR:
In normal American English, PHRASAL VERBS are used constantly. This is one of the reasons why English can function with a relatively small vocabulary and yet express ideas with great clarity and precision. The combinations
VERB (1) + PREPOSITIONS or ADVERBS = VERB (2)
make it possible to express hundreds of ideas, such as movement (go on), direction (go back home), etc. In some cases, the particle changes the meaning of the verb drastically: go over = analyze.
Ex.:

	PARTÍCULA

	VERBO (2)

A primeira é o BACK !!!

FRIEND 1: Are you going to have dessert?
FRIEND 2: I don't know. How about you?
FRIEND 3: I'm not sure. Let's see what they have.
FRIEND 4: What do you have for dessert today?
WAITRESS: You can have a piece of apple pie, a piece of blueberry pie, a bowl of our fresh strawberries, or perhaps a dish of chocolate pudding. We're also offering today a slice of our delicious cheesecake, a bowl of fresh blueberries, and today's special dessert, a piece of our Chocolate Surprise Cake. You can also have a dish of chocolate or vanilla ice cream.
FRIEND 3: Everything looks delicious.
FRIEND 2: Everything looks so good I can't decide.
FRIEND 1: I think I'd like a piece of apple pie and a cup of coffee.
WAITRESS: All right. And how about you?
FRIEND 2: Let me have a bowl of strawberries, please, and a glass of milk. It’s funny because now I THINK BACK when we were children and got completely crazy when our mothers prepared those so tasteful desserts ...
FRIEND 1: Yeah! And you know what? Those strawberries look very good. I don't think I want a piece of apple pie. Let me have a bowl of strawberries, too.
WAITRESS: All right.
FRIEND 4: Can you tell me about the Chocolate Surprise Cake?
WAITRESS: Certainly. It's a chocolate cake with big chunks of chocolate and a layer of strawberry jam in the middle, with a delicious chocolate frosting.
FRIEND 4: It sounds wonderful! Please give me a piece of the Chocolate Surprise Cake and a cup of tea, please.
FRIEND 2: Hmm. That Chocolate Surprise Cake sounds fantastic.
WAITRESS: It really is excellent. Do you want to have that instead of a bowl of strawberries?
FRIEND 2: Yes. I think so. And please, GIVE this menu BACK because I want to eat more ...
FRIEND 1: The cake sounds magnificent, but I'm pretty full. Do you want to share your piece with me, and I can give you some of my strawberries?
FRIEND 2: Well, uh ... I really don't want any strawberries today.
FRIEND 1: You know what? Forget my bowl of strawberries. I'd like a piece of the Chocolate Surprise Cake, too.
WAITRESS: Okay. And what can I get for YOU?
FRIEND 3: I can't decide between a slice of cheesecake and a dish of vanilla ice cream.
FRIEND 4: Have the cheesecake. It looks very good.
FRIEND 3: Let me have a slice of the cheesecake, please, and a cup of coffee.
WAITRESS: Okay, so that's three pieces of Chocolate Surprise Cake, a slice of cheesecake, two cups of coffee, a cup of tea, and a glass of milk.
FRIEND 1: You know what? That cheesecake looks so delicious...
FRIEND 4: Uh-oh. Guess what? It's one-thirty.
FRIEND 2: One-thirty? We have TO GET BACK to the office!
FRIEND 1: But what about the Chocolate Surprise Cake?
FRIEND 3: I'm very sorry. We're going to have to leave. Could we have the check, please?
WAITRESS: No desserts?

G) MEDICINE.
DON’T FRETTHE SOAP
No need to wring your hands over stocking the bathroom with antibacterial soap. A few years ago when scientists warned that bacteria were becoming resistant to antibiotics, some speculated that antibacterial cleaning products were partially to blame. But there’s no link between antibacterial soaps and “superbugs”, according to Brigham Young University’s Eugene Cole, lead author in a new study published in the Journal of Applied Microbiology. (The research was sponsored by a maker of cleaning products, though it was peer reviewed.) A major culprit is overuse of prescription antibiotics, Cole says. It’s good to know antibacterial soaps aren’t harmful, but they might not be very helpful, either (springing for a name brand’s your best bet). When it comes to killing germs, other studies comparing antibacterial soaps to plain bathroom bars have found it’s a wash.
