Brazil Economic and Political blocks Mael Bourhy- Sophie Rescoussié - Felipe Rodrigues - Claire Schwartz - Nathanaël Silvini Economic blocks Aladi Aladi stands for Asociación Latinoamericana de Integración, which is Spanish for Latin American Integration Association and is the earliest trade block in Latin America, created in 1980. There are actually 13 members in Aladi Mercosur Mercosur stands for Mercado Común del Sur, which is Spanish for Southern Common Market, and is the most successful economic trade block in which Brazil participates. It was originally formed by Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay in March 1991, who are stil full-time members. Aladi Mercosur Political Blocks OEA OEA stands for Organización de los Estados Americanos, which is Spanish for Organization of American States. OEA was created in 1948 for the purposes of regional solidarity and cooperation among its member states. Unasur Unasur stands for Unión de Naciones Suramericanas, which is Spanish for Union of South American Nations. Unasur was created in 2008 and brings together in a political-economic integration project the two major trade blocks in South America: Mercosur and the Andean Community of Nations. CELAC CELAC stands for Comunidad de Estados Latinoamericanos y Caribeños, which is Spanish for Community of Latin American and Caribbean States OEA UNASUR CELAC 8 The most important block - Mercosur MERCOSUR is one of the successful multilateral trade agreements in the world. Four countries in South America - Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay- joined together to create the Common Market of South America (Mercado Comun del Sur, or MERCOSUR) in March 1991 The aims of that block is to promote the integration of its members by means of free circulation of goods, services and inputs. Citizens from this block can travel freely between Mercosur countries with only their National Identification Document. It is the most active of the regional blocks of which Brazil is a member has accomplished many important measures, especially regarding interstate mobility of its citizens. 9 Advantages and Disadvantages of MERCOSUR On the one hand, there are some advantages of Mercosur from the Brazilian perspective. That agreement allows Brazil to have access to a substantial international market where it tends to dominate due to its scale and its diversified industries. Also, people have free circulation through the members, facilitating tourism, negotiation among members and international integration with less bureaucracy and costs. On the other hand, there are some disadvantages. Brazilians industries became exposed to strong international sectors from the other members, generating several losses either for the national economy regarding trade balance. Furthermore, in some countries like Paraguay is cheaper to produce; as a result, some companies preferer to produce there, which leads to higher unemployment rates in Brazil. 10
