 Usamos o past perfect para expressar um fato que aconteceu no passado antes de outro que também aconteceu no passado (passado anterior a outro passado).
 O past perfect , que expressa o primeiro fato, está sempre em correlação a um simple past, que expressa o fato posterior.

The patient had already died when the doctor arrived at the hospital.
Primeiro o paciente morreu, depois o médico chegou. Ambos os fatos se deram no passado, mas um antecedeu o outro. O mesmo ocorre no exemplo seguinte: o ônibus saiu às 9:30 e você chegou à rodoviária às 9:35.

Introduzimos, muitas vezes, o past perfect com advérbios como: when (quando), by the time (quando), already (já), never (nunca), ever (já, alguma vez), just (há pouco, recentemente), before (antes), after (depois).
