TRANSCRIPTION CONVENTIONS 
By Roberto Amorim (Bob) 
1. TRANSCRIBE YOUR SPEAKING TASK exactly the way it was delivered (with grammar or pronunciation errors) 
2. Select the full text, set line spacing to 1.5, and number the lines (Layout/Line Numbers/Continuous) 
3. TRY and trying to spot the problems listed below and identify them with the following conventions: 
 
CONVENTION MEANING 
XXX Bold indicates grammar errors 
xxx Italics indicate pronunciation error 
[ ] brackets indicate poor vocabulary choice and/or usage 
[MW] the letters MW between brackets indicate a missing word 
( ... ) three periods within parentheses indicates long pause 
(xxx) parentheses around text indicate transcriber’s doubt about hearing of passage 
((cough)) items within double parentheses indicate sounds which are not easy to transcribe 
{Um} braces indicate the occurrence of fillers Ex.: {Um} {uh} {uh} {er} {well} {you know} {I mean} 
 
 
4. ANALYZE and comment, line by line, on probable explanations to the problems you identify. 
5. Self-Assessment: Rate yourself from 1 to 4, add the individual ratings and divide the total by 9 to get your score.

Vocabulary choice, range and use is rich and/or appropriate, and display maturity 
 
Transitions and connectors are used appropriately to show progression or relationships 
 
 
TOTAL SCORE 
 
6. Questions for reflection: 
• What did you learn from the transcription and analysis of your speech? 
• What would you do differently next time? 
• How can you avoid making the same mistakes next time? 
• What kind of help did you look for in finding delivery inaccuracies? 
• Considering that it may be difficult for the rater to understand your accent, what can you do to improve intelligibility?
