Introduction
Even if an area has been extensively sampled, researchers
must bear in mind that its avifauna will never be completely
known (Remsen 1994). This is particularly true for the state
of Minas Gerais, which harbors approximately 800 species of
birds (Mattos et al. 1993, Fundação Biodiversitas 2007, En-
drigo & Silveira 2013). In recent years, several papers have
been published concerning range extensions and noteworthy
bird records for this state (e.g., Kirwan et al. 2001, Raposo et
al. 2002, Vasconcelos et al. 2006, Luiz et al. 2006, Firme et
al. 2008, Lopes et al. 2010, Lombardi et al. 2012, Mazzoni et
al. 2012, Valério et al. 2015). Notwithstanding these records,
basic knowledge on the distribution of many species remains
obscure, and this type of information is essential for conserva-
tion (Bibby et al. 1992, Develey & Goerck 2009). For this re-
ason, almost 10% of the bird species in Minas Gerais are con-
sidered to be data deficient, i.e., current knowledge available is
not sufficient for an assessment of their extinction risk facing
the criteria adopted in the last review of threatened species in
this state (Fundação Biodiversitas 2007). Herein, we present
new data on the geographic distribution of 29 species that are
either endemic or are associated with the Atlantic Forest in the
state of Minas Gerais. We also present information about novel
specimens which are rare or little represented in ornithological
collections.
Methods
The records presented in this paper were obtained during
field work by the authors in the state of Minas Gerais between
the years 1998 and 2015. Detailed information on each record,
as well as geographic coordinates and altitude, are presen-
ted in the species accounts, below. Coordinates and altitude
were obtained in the field using a GPS and from the softwa-
re Google EarthTM (http://www.google.com/earth/download/
ge/). Coordinates of records obtained from the literature or
from museum specimens collected by others were based on the
Brazilian Ornithological Gazetteer (Paynter & Traylor 1991).
Birds were identified using binoculars, by their vocalizations,
and, whenever possible, they were photographed and/or tape-
-recorded. Sound-recordings were made with Sony PCM-M10,
Tascam DR40 and Sony TCM-5000 recorders and Sennheiser
ME-66 and Sony ECM-674 microphones. Copies of these
recordings have been deposited in the Arquivo Sonoro Prof.
Elias Coelho (ASEC), Departamento de Zoologia, Universi-
dade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and at
Xeno-canto (XC: www.xeno-canto.org). Specimens were col-
lected using mist-nets and rifles under IBAMA permit numbers
079/99, 117/2000, 197/2001, 192/2002, 207/2003, 201/2005,
015/2007, 007/2008, 564/2009, 594/2009, 864/2009,
909/2009, 411/2011; and SISBio permit numbers 14496-3
and 28301-1. Voucher specimens were deposited in the orni-
thological collections of the Museu de Ciências Naturais da
Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Minas Gerais (MCNA),
and of the Departamento de Zoologia da Universidade Federal
de Minas Gerais (DZUFMG), both in Belo Horizonte, Minas
Gerais, Brazil. Taxonomic nomenclature and order follow the
Brazilian Ornithological Records Committee (Piacentini et al.
2015). The conservation status of threatened species was based
on global (IUCN 2015), national (MMA 2014) and state (CO-
PAM 2010) lists. Data deficient and near threatened species
were searched, respectively, in Fundação Biodiversitas (2007),
for the state of Minas Gerais, and IUCN (2015), concerning
global status.
Species accounts
East Brazilian Chachalaca Ortalis araucuan (Spix, 1825)
This cracid is currently considered as data deficient in Mi-
nas Gerais (Fundação Biodiversitas 2007). Between 23-27
November 2000, and 9-15 January 2001, MFV observed and
tape-recorded several groups in two forest fragments located
in the municipalities of São Pedro do Suaçuí (18o24’33”S;
42o32’04”W, 610 m) and Peçanha (18o21’07”S; 42o31’29”W,
585 m), eastern Minas Gerais. LGM photographed and tape-re-
corded the species in two localities within Conceição do Mato
Dentro and Dom Joaquim municipalities on 20 and 30 Janua-
ry 2011, respectively. At the first, small groups of individuals
were recorded in dense scrubs next to the eastern slope of Serra
do Sapo (18o54’18”S; 43o24’25”W, 690 m) and around a small
farm north of the district of São Sebastião do Bom Sucesso
(18o54’30”S; 43o24’18”W, 700 m). In Dom Joaquim, a couple
was observed in a semideciduous forest fragment at Fazenda
Estiva (18o53’50”S; 43o19’18”W, 650 m). A road-killed speci-
men (MCNA-4762 – Figure 1), collected by M. F. O. Passos
on 9 October 2013, was found close to the Anglo-Ferrous Mine
(18º51’24’’S; 43º25’20’’W, 675 m), Conceição do Mato Den-
tro. GBM also tape-recorded this species on 11 October 2006
in a semideciduous forest in Fazenda Arruda (18o50’08”S;
Atualidades Ornitológicas, 190, março e abril de 2016 - www.ao.com.br34
43o24’26”W, 684 m), Alvorada de Minas municipality, near
MG-010 road. Between 12-17 January and 19-23 June 2010,
and 12-16 January 2011, this species was recorded by LGM,
AP and RM along riparian thickets and forests on both banks
of Rio Guanhães (18o59’54”S; 42o56’53”W, 590 m), Dores de
Guanhães municipality, and Rio Corrente Grande (18o53’34”S;
42o43’16”W, 690 m, tape-recording XC-189706), Virginópolis
municipality.
The East Brazilian Chacalaca was relatively common in the
sampled localities described above, all of them located in the
upper Rio Doce basin, a region where the Atlantic Forest was
severely degraded and fragmented. These records represent a
range extension of over 120 km to the south in relation to the
nearest published locality, which is São Domingos (17o53’S;
42o59’W) (Pinto 1952, Paynter & Traylor 1991). Elsewhere,
at the Rio Pardo basin, in northeastern Minas Gerais, MFV
observed and heard vocalizations of the species between 1-3
September 2001, 5-10 December 2006, and 27-28 December
2007, in the foothills of Serra do Pau D’Arco (15°03’27”S;
42°39’28”W, 965 m), Santo Antônio do Retiro municipality.
The vegetation of this area consists of a transitional forest of
arboreal caatinga, cerradão and Atlantic Forest. Apart from
these records, this species is known to occur in the eastern
Espinhaço Range, at Acauã Ecological Station, Leme do Pra-
do municipality (17°08’S; 42°44’W, 940 m) (Vasconcelos &
D’Angelo Neto 2007).
Spot-winged Wood-Quail Odontophorus capueira (Spix,
1825)
This species is considered endangered in Minas Gerais
(COPAM 2010). Recent state records were from the eastern
slopes of Serra do Cipó (Carrara & Faria 2012), in Araucaria
forest fragments in the Serra da Mantiqueira (Vasconcelos &
D’Angelo Neto 2009), at Acauã Ecological Station, Leme do
Prado and Turmalina municipalities (Vasconcelos & D’Angelo
Neto 2007, Carrara et al. 2013), at four localities along the
Rios Mucuri and Jequitinhonha hydrographic basins, northeas-
tern Minas Gerais (Ribon et al. 2006), and at Serra do Caraça
(Vasconcelos 1999). An old specimen from Mariana municipa-
lity was also reported (Vasconcelos et al. 2014). On 2 Septem-
ber 2007, GBM tape-recorded this species in a riparian forest
at Rio Santo Antônio (19o09’49”S; 43o19’26”W, 514 m), Mor-
ro do Pilar municipality. AP and T. Souza recorded O. capueira
in two localities at Conceição do Mato Dentro municipality:
on 15 November 2010, a group was heard and tape-recorded(XC-293172) at the border of a semideciduous forest frag-
ment on the western slope of Serra da Ferrugem (19o05’25”S;
43o23’21”W, 710 m). On 18 November 2010, another group
was heard and tape-recorded from dense scrubs on the border
of a semideciduous forest fragment near the district of Meloso
(19o03’00”S; 43o21’24”W, 720 m). A local farmer reported that
this species used to be much more common in the region seve-
ral years ago, but it has become very rare nowadays, probably
due to hunting and deforestation.
Pavonine Cuckoo Dromococcyx pavoninus Pelzeln, 1870
This uncommon cuckoo has a patchy and discontinuous
distribution (Payne 1997, 2005) and has only recently been
discovered in the states of Rio Grande do Sul (Albuquerque
1996) and Santa Catarina (Azevedo & Ghizoni-Jr 2005). It was
mentioned from Minas Gerais by Mattos et al. (1993), without
a precise locality, and by Ribon et al. (2003) from forest frag-
ments of the Viçosa region. MFV heard this species on 24 July
1998 and 24 June 2011 in a secondary forest at Fazenda Bo-
caina (19o59’49”S; 43o28’27”W, 835 m), a small farm near the
district of Sumidouro, Santa Bárbara municipality. One indivi-
dual was heard early at dawn by LGM on 28 August 2009 in
a semidecidous forest near the district of Cocais (19o53’18”S;
43o26’19”W, 838 m), Barão de Cocais municipality. LGM and
AP recorded the species on 7 and 8 August 2009, when an indi-
vidual was attracted to playback, photographed (Figure 2) and
tape-recorded (XC-293175) in the foothills of Serra da Pie-
dade (19o51’16”S; 43o47’51”W, 930 m), Sabará municipality.
On this occasion, the species was seen in the dense understory
of an abandoned Eucalyptus plantation, amongst dense entan-
glements of vines and lianas. This record extends its range c.
135 km to the northwest in relation to the Viçosa municipality.
On 23 August 2010, LGM and AP tape-recorded D. pavoninus
near the district of Santa Rita Durão (20o10’39”S; 43o27’35”W,
922 m), Mariana municipality. The bird responded to playback
and remained singing even after twilight. The vegetation of
this area was much similar to that of Sabará. An additional
record was obtained on 10 October 2011, when one individual
was heard by LGM, MFV and E. C. Dutra at the main road of

Reserva Particular do Patrimônio Natural (RPPN) Santuário
do Caraça (20o03’20”S; 43o30’28”W, 950 m). Based on the
scarcity of records in Minas Gerais, we recommend that the
Pavonine Cuckoo be placed into the data deficient category on
the red list of threatened species of Minas Gerais until further
information is available to confirm its real situation in the state.
Rusty-barred Owl Strix hylophila Temminck, 1825
This species is considered near threatened globally because
its population is suspected to be declining (IUCN 2015). On the
nights of 6 and 7 October 2007 (between 20:00 h and 22:00 h),
a couple was tape-recorded by MFV and A. Nemésio in a mon-
tane forest in the Taboões region (20o04’40”S; 43o30’31”W,
1,215 m), RPPN Santuário do Caraça, at the Serra do Caraça,
Santa Bárbara municipality. These birds were very responsi-
ve to playback and approached the observers. On 17 February
2009 LGM and AP tape-recorded (XC-37226) a couple in a
montane semideciduous forest located east of the district of
Morro Vermelho (19o57’10”S; 43o36’40”W, 1,300 m), at the
limits between Barão de Cocais and Caeté municipalities. On
15 February 2012, GBM and E. Luciano also tape-recorded
this species at Rio Paraopeba basin in a semidecidous forest
at Brumadinho municipality (20o10’09”S; 43o58’52”W, 1,400
m). LGM also sound-recorded the species (XC-293177) in the
late afternoon of 6 March 2013, on the border of a montane se-
mideciduous forest at Serra da Gandarela, Santa Bárbara mu-
nicipality (20o06’30”S; 43o39’25”W, 1,370 m). There is also a
recent study skin collected by L. E. Lopes in Itacolomi State
Park (20°25’40”S; 43°30’35”W, 1,380 m) (DZUFMG-6182,
Figure 3B), Ouro Preto municipality. These appear to be the
northernmost records of this species, which is endemic to the
southern Atlantic Forest of Brazil, east and south Paraguay and
extreme north-east Argentina (Holt et al. 1999). Rusty-barred
Owl is known from a few localities in Minas Gerais: Levanti-
na, Viçosa, Poços de Caldas plateau, Serra do Brigadeiro State
Park, Serra do Juncal, Pedra de São Domingos, Bicho do Mato,
Lua de Pedra, Sertão do Cantagalo (DZUFMG-5661, Figure
3A), and Monte Verde/São Francisco Xavier region (Schubart
et al. 1965, Erickson & Mumford 1976, Monteiro et al. 1983,
Monteiro & Mattos 1984, Lara et al. 1990, Simon et al. 1999,
Bencke et al. 2006, Vasconcelos & D’Angelo-Neto 2009), the
last one on the border with São Paulo state.
Long-tailed Potoo Nyctibius aethereus aethereus (Wied,
1820)
The Long-tailed Potoo is a large and cryptic species typi-
cal of lowland forests (Cleere 2010). Three subspecies are
recognized in South America, of which two occur in Brazil
(Cohn-Haft 1999, Grantsau 2010a): Nyctibius aethereus longi-
caudatus, restricted to the Amazonian region; and N. a. aethe-
reus, endemic to the Atlantic Forest. The latter is considered
endangered in Brazil (MMA 2014) and data deficient in Minas
Gerais (Fundação Biodiversitas 2007). It was included as an
endangered species only in the last revision of the Brazilian red
list (MMA 2014), although Cohn-Haft (1999) already argued
that it should be considered threatened due to its restricted
range and ongoing deforestation of the Atlantic Forest region
(Cohn-Haft 1999). It has only recently been rediscovered at
the Serra dos Órgãos massif, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, af-
ter 117 years without records in the region (Mallet-Rodrigues
et al. 2007, Pimentel 2011). Ribon et al. (2006) recorded this
species at Fazenda Duas Barras, Santa Maria do Salto munici-
pality, northeastern Minas Gerais. We found only three other
mentions of the species for the state: a female collected by P.
W. Lund in Lagoa Santa municipality in the 19th century (Kra-
bbe 2007); a record by E. Garbe in Teófilo Otoni municipality
(Pinto 1952); and an undocumented record for Serra do Cara-
ça (Carnevalli 1980), although in this last location the species
has never been recorded subsequently despite the considerable
effort made by ornithologists in the region (Vasconcelos 2001;
Vasconcelos & Melo-Júnior 2001; Vasconcelos et al. 2003).
Furthermore, Vasconcelos & Melo-Júnior (2001) argued that
this species might have been misidentified by Carnevalli
(1980), as its range does not appear to reach Serra do Caraça.
On the night of 3 September 2009 LGM and RM heard this
species in a submontane rain forest near Santana do Deserto
municipality (21o56’28”S; 43o13’33”W, 500 m). The bird was
attracted to playback and perched in the mid-canopy of the fo-
rest, where it was photographed (Figure 4) and tape-recorded
(XC-293186). The night was clear with full moon, and the bird
seemed very active in this situation, a fact already noticed by
Cohn-Haft (1993) for other potoos. At a given moment, the

bird performed a quick sally upward (“aerial hawking”, sensu
Fitzpatrick 1980) and returned to its perch after grabbing what
seemed to be a large moth.
Channel-billed Toucan Ramphastos vitellinus ariel Vigors,
1826
This toucan is currently considered data deficient in Minas
Gerais (Fundação Biodiversitas 2007) and critically endange-
red in the Viçosa region (Ribon et al. 2003). The subspecies
R. v. ariel is also considered endangered by the IUCN (2015).
AP, LGM and RM observed and tape-recorded the species on
January and July 2010 and January 2011 along riparian forests
in the Rio Guanhães (18o59’54”S; 42o56’53”W, 590 m), Dores
de Guanhães municipality. LGM and J. C. de Azevedo also
heard it in a forest fragment on the right bank of Rio Corrente
Grande (18o53’34”S; 42o43’16”W, 690 m), Virginópolis mu-
nicipality, on 15 January 2010. On 16 November 2010 AP and
T. Souza tape-recorded the species on the western slope of
Serra da Ferrugem (19o01’13”S; 43o24’39”W, 800 m), Con-
ceição do Mato Dentro municipality. On 12 April 2011, on
a subsequent visit to this area, AP and T. O. Almeida heard
the species in a forest fragment next to the Rio Santo Antônio
(19o06’09”S; 43o24’30”W, 620 m). Elsewhere, at Barro Bran-
co (20o27’08”S; 43o15’50”W, 580 m), Mariana municipality,
MFV heard the vocalizations of one individual in a secondary
forest on the left bank of Rio Gualaxo do Sul, on 4 May 2004.
Later, on 2 September 2004, another individual was observed
and tape-recorded in this same area. On 30 August 2014, LGM
recorded the species in a semideciduous forest fragment in
the eastern slope of the Espinhaço Range, Serro municipality
(18o33’02”S; 43o25’11”W, 880 m). There are historical records
of the species from Viçosa municipality, Rio Piracicaba, and
Santa Fé, the last one in the Rio Paraíba do Sul basin, extreme
southeastern Minas Gerais (Pinto 1952). More recently it has
been recorded by Ribon et al. (2006) in five localities along
the Rio Mucuri and Rio Jequitinhonha hydrographic basins,
northeastern Minas Gerais. Therefore, the records presented
here are probably the most inland occurrences of this species
in the state.
Saffron Toucanet Pteroglossus bailloni (Vieillot, 1819)
This species is considered near threatened globally (IUCN
2015) and vulnerable in the state of Minas Gerais (COPAM
2010). On 8 June 2010, during a bird survey at Santana do De-
serto municipality, LGM and AP photographed (Figure 5) and
tape-recorded (XC-293188) a couple of this species on the bor-
der of a submontane rain forest (21o56’28”S; 43o13’33”W, 500
m). The birds responded to playback and vocalized for several
minutes. This record adds a new locality for the Saffron Touca-
net in Minas Gerais, where it has previously been recorded at
Viçosa municipality (Pinto 1952, Ribon et al. 2003), Fazenda
Boa Esperança, close to Nova Era municipality (Pinto 1952)
and Fazenda Duas Barras, Santa Maria do Salto municipality,
northeastern Minas Gerais (Ribon et al. 2006).
Yellow-browed Woodpecker Piculus aurulentus (Temmin-
ck, 1821)
This species is near threatened globally (IUCN 2015). A male
collected by MFV and LGM on 13 August 2012 (MCNA-2419,
Figure 6), on the eastern slope of Serra da Gandarela, San-
ta Bárbara municipality (20o16’14”S; 43o38’08”W, 1,348 m),
represents the second specimen collected in the state of Mi-
nas Gerais (Vasconcelos et al. 2008, Vasconcelos & D’Angelo
Neto 2009), and the first for the Espinhaço Range. This is also
probably the northern limit of its distribution.
Vinaceous-breasted Parrot Amazona vinacea (Kuhl, 1820)
This species is classified as globally endangered (IUCN
2015) and vulnerable in Brazil (MMA 2014) and Minas Gerais
(COPAM 2010). Its presence in the eastern Serra do Cipó re-
gion was recently reported by Carrara & Faria (2012). LGM,
RM and AP observed and tape-recorded the species between
19-23 July 2010, 12-16 January 2011 and 29-31 July 2011 at
Dores de Guanhães municipality, where birds were always
seen in small groups of one or two couples flying over ripa-
rian forests along the Rio Guanhães (18o59’54”S; 42o56’53”W,
590 m). LGM sighted and tape-recorded a flock of 10 birds
on 2 February 2011 flying over Fazenda Estiva (18o53’50”S;
43o19’18”W, 650 m), Dom Joaquim municipality. On 27 Ja-
nuary 2011 a couple was photographed (Figure 7) in the same
area sitting atop a dead tree on the border of a semideciduous
forest. The largest flock was observed and tape-recorded by
AP and T. O. Almeida on 10 April 2011 at Conceição do Mato
Dentro municipality. On that occasion, more than 20 birds
were seen flying over a small farm, next to the Rio Santo An-
tônio (19o07’47”S; 43o24’50”W, 760 m). Between 8-9 October

2006 three groups of six to eight individuals were seen and
tape-recorded twice by GBM near Fazenda Frade (20o16’54”S;
42o37’05”W, 396 m and 20o16’34”S; 42o37’33”W, 404 m), at
Santo Antônio do Grama municipality. Another group with c.
eight individuals was recorded in a semideciduous forest frag-
ment intermixed with riparian forests at Fazenda Ponte Cober-
ta (20o16’53”S; 42o38’07”W, 350 m). Landscapes around those
fragments were composed of pastures and Eucalyptus plan-
tations. On 5 September 2007 GBM also tape-recorded and
photographed the species at Itabira municipality (19o30’28”S;
43o15’12”W, 758 m). These records show that the upper Rio
Doce region may still harbor considerable populations of the
Vinaceous-breasted Parrot. Nevertheless, it is important to em-
phasize that none of our records was made inside protected
areas. Moreover, the species suffers from poaching in the re-
gion, as related to us by local residents. We also observed some
individuals in captivity in those regions where we recorded the
species. The establishment of reserves in the region, associa-
ted with environmental education with the local population, is
urgently needed in order to preserve the remaining populations
of this threatened species.
Spot-breasted Antvireo Dysithamnus stictothorax (Temmin-
ck, 1823)
This near threatened species (IUCN 2015) was observed
regularly by LGM, AP and RM in the municipalities of Do-
res de Guanhães (Figure 8) and Virginópolis between 12-17
January, 19-23 June 2010, and 12-16 January 2011, being
tape-recorded on all occasions. Birds were usually found in
well preserved semideciduous forest fragments with bamboo
stands (Merostachys sp. and Guadua sp.) along the Rio Cor-
rente Grande (18o53’34”S; 42o43’16”W, 690 m), at Virginó-
polis municipality, and along the Rio Guanhães (18o59’54”S;
42o56’53”W, 590 m), at Dores de Guanhães municipality. On
14 February 2011, LGM and AP observed and tape-recorded
(XC-293194) a couple of D. stictothorax in a semideciduous
forest fragment on the western slope of Serra da Ferrugem
(19o06’22”S; 43o22’40”W, 723 m), Conceição do Mato Dentro
municipality. The record made in Conceição do Mato Dentro
is the most inland occurrence of this species in Minas Gerais,
and expands its range about 100 km westward in relation to
the nearest published locality, which is Rio Piracicaba (see
Pinto 1952, Paynter & Traylor 1991). Other records from Fa-
zenda da Prata, Além Paraíba municipality, are based on two
specimens collected by FIAG on 3 September2010 (MCNA-
1960; 21o55’30”S; 42o53’41”W, 486 m) and by MFV, LGM
and FIAG on 4 September 2011 (MCNA-1957; 21o54’39”S;
42o52’35”W, 674 m) (Figure 9).
Plumbeous Antvireo Dysithamnus plumbeus (Wied, 1831)
In Minas Gerais, there are historical published records of
this species (based on specimens) for Rio Matipó (19o53’S;
42o33’W), São Benedito (19o30’S, 41o16’W, 110 m), Rio Pira-
cicaba (19o30’S; 42o31’W), Rio Doce (19o30’S; 42o30’W) and
Rio Suaçuí (18o50’S; 41o46’W) (Pinto 1952). Recent records
not involving specimen collecting were made at the Caratin-
ga Biological Station (19o44’S; 41o49’W), Caratinga muni-
cipality, Rio Doce State Park (19o45’S; 42o37’W), Marliéria
municipality (Machado & Fonseca 2000), Bandeira complex,
Jordânia and Bandeira municipalities, and Fazenda Duas Bar-
ras, Santa Maria do Salto municipality (Ribon et al. 2006). Al-
though these authors did not collect specimens in these sites,
there are three unreported male specimens: DZUFMG-1024,
collected on 30 April 1985 by N. E. D. Carnevalli at Caratinga
Biological Station (mentioned as “Fazenda Montes Claros”,
the ancient name of this reserve); DZUFMG-1025, collected
on 16 August 1978 by G. T. Mattos at Rio Doce State Park

(Lagoa do Aníbal); and DZUFMG-1026, collected on 26 Sep-
tember 1975 by N. E. D. Carnevalli also in Rio Doce State Park
(Figure 10A). On 24 September 2009, CERTB collected a cou-
ple (found dead in mist-net) on the right margin of Rio Doce
(20o00’47”S; 42o43’58”W, 296 m), Rio Casca municipality.
Both specimens were deposited in MCNA under the numbers
MCNA-1471 (male) and 1472 (female) (Figure 10B). These
records, confirmed by specimens, represent a range extension
of c. 50 km to the interior of Brazil.
Black-cheeked Gnateater Conopophaga melanops (Vieillot,
1818)
The known range of this species in Minas Gerais is in the
easternmost state boundaries with Bahia, Espírito Santo and
Rio de Janeiro (IUCN 2015). There are historical published
records for São Benedito (19o30’S; 41o16’W, 110 m), Rio Pi-
racicaba (19o30’S; 42o31’W), Rio Doce (19o30’S; 42o30’W)
and Rio Suaçuí (18o50’S; 41o46’W) (Pinto 1952). Ribon et al.
(2006) also recorded the species in three localities along the
Rio Jequitinhonha hydrographic basin in northeastern Minas
Gerais. On 25 September 2009, CERTB collected a male speci-
men (MCNA-1473, Figure 11) on the right margin of Rio Doce
(20o01’17”S; 42o46’14”W, 320 m), Rio Casca municipality.
This record represents a range extension of c. 110 km to the in-
terior of Brazil. Furthermore, there are recent sight records, not
involving collecting, in the Rio Paraíba do Sul basin, at Poço
D’Anta Municipal Biological Reserve (21o45’S; 43o19’W),
Juiz de Fora municipality (Manhães & Loures-Ribeiro 2011).
Other records in the Paraíba do Sul basin are represented by
recent specimens collected by FIAG at Fazenda Cachoeirão
(MCNA-1952, 21o56’02”S; 42o53’21”W, 390 m) and Fazenda
da Prata (MCNA-1953, 1954, 1955, 21o54’39”S; 42o52’35”W,
675 m), both in Além Paraíba municipality (Figure 11).
Spotted Bamboowren Psilorhamphus guttatus (Ménétriès,
1835)
This species is considered near threatened globally (IUCN
2015) and data deficient in Minas Gerais (Fundação Biodi-
versitas 2007). Parker et al. (1996) considered it uncommon
throughout its range and Ribon et al. (2003) listed the Spot-
ted Bamboowren as critically endangered in the forest frag-
ments of Viçosa region. The species was mentioned for Minas
Gerais by Mattos et al. (1993) without any locality or source
of information, although it is not present in the compilation
made by Pinto (1952). On 5 April 2010 AP and LGM obser-
ved and tape-recorded a couple of P. guttatus in dense bamboo
stands (Merostachys sp.) in the understory of an abandoned
Eucalyptus plantation near the district of Santa Rita Durão
(20o12’03”S; 43o25’39”W, 900 m), Mariana municipality. On
22, 24 and 26 August 2010 the species was found and tape-
-recorded in two new localities in this region (20o10’34”S;
43o26’17”W, 850 m and 20o10’38”S; 43o27’24”W, 920 m),
also in Mariana municipality. These records were conducted
in the shaded and fern-dominated understory of semideciduous
forests, habitat shared in the same area by two other species of
Rhinocryptidae: the White-breasted Tapaculo Eleoscytalopus
indigoticus (Wied, 1831) and the recently described Rock Ta-
paculo Scytalopus petrophilus Whitney, Vasconcelos, Silveira
& Pacheco, 2010. An adult male was collected on 27 October
2010 by LGM and AP next to the right bank of Rio Piracica-
ba (20o10’03”S; 43o27’05”W, 920 m), Mariana municipality,
in dense understory of a semideciduous forest dominated by
bamboos and grasses. This male specimen was prepared as

a study skin (MCNA-1362, Figure 12). An additional record
was obtained on 10 October 2011, when one individual was
heard by LGM, MFV and E. C. Dutra at the main road insi-
de RPPN Santuário do Caraça (20o03’25”S; 43o30’10”W, 990
m), Santa Bárbara municipality. LGM found this species to be
reasonably common in the eastern slopes of the Serra da Gan-
darela, Santa Bárbara municipality, being found year-round in
five localities (20o03’58”S; 43o35’20”W, 920 m; 20o06’02”S;
43o37’03”W, 1,100 m; 20o05’23”S; 43o37’18”W, 1,274 m;
20o06’54”S; 43o38’16”W, 1,400 m) between 31 October 2011
and 21 November 2012 (XC-189522). The records in the Ser-
ra da Gandarela also establish a new altitudinal limit for the
species (1,400 m), which was proposed to be 900 m (Parker
et al. 1996). Psilorhamphus guttatus was described in 1835
by Edouard Ménétriès, but its type-locality remains a mystery,
which was originally designated as “Cuyabá”. This could be
the capital of Mato Grosso state (where the Langsfdorff Ex-
pedition stayed for almost one year) or the Cuiabá gold mine
(see Pacheco 2004), in Sabará, Quadrilátero Ferrífero region,
Minas Gerais. However, Pacheco (2004) discussed the validi-
ty of this information, assigning it to a probable mislabelled
specimen. Thus, our records are probably the first ones for the
Quadrilátero Ferrífero region and expand its distribution about
100 km to the northwest in relation to Viçosa (Ribon et al.
2003). Alternatively, the type specimen of Ménétriès was not
mislabeled and was actually collected at Cuiabá gold mine.
Such’s Antthrush Chamaeza meruloides Vigors, 1825
On 15 November 2010 AP heard the species in a patch of
semidecidous forest on the western slope of Serra da Ferrugem
(19o05’25”S; 43o23’21”W, 710 m), Conceição do MatoDentro
municipality. Later, in February 2011, the species was regular-
ly recorded by LGM and AP in forest patches along both slopes
of that mountain, and it was tape-recorded on all occasions. At
the same municipality, three individuals were heard and tape-
-recorded on 12 February 2011 on the understory of a semi-
deciduous forest next to the Rio Santo Antônio (19o06’09”S;
43o24’30”W, 620 m). AP and LGM heard and tape-recorded
a single individual vocalizing from a dense hillside semide-
ciduous forest on 11 February 2011 at Morro do Pilar muni-
cipality (19o10’06”S; 43o24’49”W, 800 m). It has also been
tape-recorded (XC-189707) by LGM on 31 October 2011 in
the eastern slope of Serra da Gandarela, Santa Bárbara muni-
cipality (20o05’51”S; 43o37’55”W, 1,370 m). Elsewhere, LGM
and AP heard the species on 15 November 2013 in the left bank
of the Rio Gualaxo do Sul, Mariana municipality (20o27’58”S;
43o26’05”W, 680 m). Our records from Conceição do Mato
Dentro, together with those recently presented for the eastern
slopes of Serra do Cipó (Carrara & Faria 2012) are even more
interior then those presented for Itamarandiba municipality
(Vasconcelos et al. 2006) and for Serra do Caraça (Vasconce-
los & Melo-Júnior 2001), emphasizing the occurrence of this
species throughout the humid forests of the eastern border of
the Espinhaço Range in Minas Gerais.
Plain-winged Woodcreeper Dendrocincla turdina (Li-
chtenstein, 1820)
Ribon et al. (2003) considered this species extinct in the fo-
rest fragments of Viçosa region, although it has recently been
recorded at the Rio Mucuri hydrographic basin (Ribon et al.
2006), and in the upper Rio Jequitinhonha basin (Vasconce-
los & D’Angelo Neto 2007, Carrara et al. 2013), both on the
northeastern part of the state. The Plain-winged Woodcreeper
was recorded in large patches of semideciduous forest in the
western slope of Serra da Ferrugem, Conceição do Mato Den-
tro municipality, by AP and T. Souza on 15 November 2010
(19o05’25”S; 43o23’21”W, 710 m), and by LGM and AP on
14 February 2011 (19o06’22”S; 43o22’40”W, 723 m). In both
occasions individuals were observed vocalizing in the unders-
tory and were tape-recorded. On 12 February 2011 LGM and
AP collected a male (MCNA-1310, Figure 13A) with a mist-
-net on the understory of a semideciduous forest next to the
Rio Santo Antônio (19o06’09”S; 43o24’30”W, 620 m), also
in Conceição do Mato Dentro. Another specimen (MCNA-
4640), collected in this same municipality by FIAG, was ob-
tained at Fazenda Passa Sete (18o51’20”S; 43o23’45”W, 655
m). Vasconcelos & D’Angelo Neto (2007) collected speci-
mens of D. turdina at Fazenda do Sr. Onofre Sandinha, Leme
do Prado municipality (DZUFMG-3567, 4007, Figure 13B).
As proposed by these authors, this species seems to be as-
sociated with the humid forests along the eastern slope of
the Espinhaço Range. Elsewhere, at the medium Rio Para-
íba do Sul basin, this species is relatively common on the
submontane rain forests of Santana do Deserto (21o56’28”S;
43o13’33”W, 500 m), where it was regularly observed, being
tape-recorded by LGM and AP on 8 June 2010. In this same
hydrographic basin, there are also specimens collected by
FIAG at Fazenda Barra do Peixe (MCNA-2080, 21o54’50”S;
42o50’03”W, 287 m) and Fazenda da Prata (MCNA-2103,
21o54’39”S; 42o52’35”W, 674 m), both located in Além Para-
íba municipality (Figure 13A).
Black-billed Scythebill Campylorhamphus falcularius
(Vieillot, 1822)
On 22 July 2010 LGM, AP and RM tape-recorded a single
individual calling from the understory of a semideciduous fo-
rest with the presence of Guadua bamboo stands next to the
Rio Guanhães (18o59’54”S; 42o56’53”W, 590 m), Dores de
Guanhães municipality. On 17 January 2011 the species was

heard by AP in a patch of semideciduous forest with bamboos
(Merostachys sp.) on the right bank of Rio Corrente Grande
(18o53’34”S; 42o43’16”W, 690 m), Virginópolis municipa-
lity. In the municipality of Conceição do Mato Dentro the
species was tape-recorded by AP and LGM on 12 February
2011 in a small forest fragment with bamboo stands next to
the Rio Santo Antônio (19o06’09”S; 43o24’30”W, 620 m).
MFV and LGM collected a female specimen (MCNA-1316,
Figure 14A) on 1 March 2010 at Fazenda Estiva, Dom Joa-
quim (18°53’41”S; 43°19’23”W, 656 m). This bird was shot
when foraging in dense stands of Guadua bamboo in the un-
derstory. LGM also tape-recorded (XC-307301) this species
on 2 May 2012 on the eastern slope of Serra da Gandarela,
Santa Bárbara municipality (20°06’00”S; 43°36’50”W, 1,040
m), which appears to be the rediscovery of this bird in the
Quadrilátero Ferrífero region, almost 40 years after the spe-
cies was collected in the Serra do Caraça. Although recor-
ded in many of the sampled areas, this species was always
present in low densities and associated with bamboo stands.
It appears that the border of distribution of this species is
represented by the semideciduous forests along the eastern
slopes of the Espinhaço Range, as also attested to by spe-
cimens collected in the Serra do Caraça, Minas Gerais state
(DZUFMG-673, 674, Figure 14B), and in Andaraí, Chapada
Diamantina, Bahia state (MPEG-47247). Recent records were
also reported from the eastern slope of Serra do Cipó (Car-
rara & Faria 2012). Additional specimens from the Atlantic
Forest of Minas Gerais were obtained by A. C. F. Alves and
A. Lamounier (MCNA-1105) on 31 October 2013 in a forest
fragment in Piedade de Caratinga municipality (19o44’09”S;
42o00’59”W, 911 m) and by FIAG (MCNA-2099) at Fazenda
da Prata (21o54’39”S; 42o52’35”W, 674 m), Além Paraíba
municipality (Figure 14A).
White-collared Foliage-gleaner Anabazenops fuscus
(Vieillot, 1816)
Despite the range map of this species showing its distri-
bution extending to central Minas Gerais (Ridgely & Tudor
1994, Remsen 2003), it has scarce records in the innermost
areas of the Atlantic Forest, and a lack of published specimens.
We present four additional specimens collected along the
border of the species’ range. On 2 April 2008, MFV collected
a couple (male DZUFMG-5896 and female DZUFMG-5897,
Figure 15A) in a secondary forest with understory domina-
ted by Merostachys bamboos, in the surroundings of Bento
Rodrigues (20o12’24”S; 43o26’17”W, 945 m), Mariana mu-
nicipality. On 30 September 2009, MFV and A. D. Epifânio
collected an additional male specimen (DZUFMG-6538, Fi-
gure 15A) in a montane forest with Merostachys bamboo, lo-
cated on the southern slope of Serra do Caraça (20o09’13”S;
43o30’37”W, 1,260 m), Mariana municipality. Carnevalli
(1980) recorded the White-collared Foliage-gleaner in the
Serra do Caraça, a record that was later considered as proba-
ble based on a misidentification by Vasconcelos & Melo-Jú-
nior (2001) in a revision of the avifauna checklist of this area.
Thus, this specimen confirms the presence of this bird in the
Serra do Caraça. On 8 March 2010, LGM collected another
male specimen (MCNA-1317, Figure 15B) at Fazenda Estiva
(18°53’31”S; 43°19’37”W, 670 m), Dom Joaquim municipa-
lity. FIAG obtained another specimen (MCNA-2098, Figure
15B) at Fazenda da Prata (21°54’39”S; 42°52’35”W, 674 m),
Além Paraíba municipality, on 21 October 2010. LGM and
E. C. Dutra also tape-recorded two individuals on 1 October
2011 in a secondary forest with stands of Merostachys bam-
boo, close to theleft bank of Rio das Velhas (20o10’20”S;
43o49’27”W, 920 m), Rio Acima municipality.
Serra do Mar Tyrant-Manakin Neopelma chrysolophum
Pinto, 1944
On 13 August 2012 a male was collected (MCNA-2418) on
the eastern slope of Serra da Gandarela, Santa Bárbara muni-
cipality (20°05’45”S; 43°37’50”W, 1,375 m, Figure 16). Al-
though recorded in two localities in the Quadrilátero Ferrífero
region (Serra do Caraça and Itabirito municipality) (Whitney
et al. 1995), this species is represented by specimens by only
four additional skins from the Serra do Caraça, deposited at
Figure 14. A: Specimens of Black-billed Scythebill

Black-and-gold Cotinga Lipaugus ater (Ferrusac, 1829)
This species’ range is restricted to the eastern mountains of
Serras do Mar and da Mantiqueira, southeastern Brazil (Pinto
1951, 1954, Mallet-Rodrigues et al. 2007, 2010, Mallet-Ro-
drigues & Noronha 2009, IUCN 2015). Interior-most recor-
ds were obtained at São Francisco, Minas Gerais (22o36’S;
45o18’W, 1,580 m – Pinto 1952, Paynter & Traylor 1991), Pico
do Itaguaré, on the boundaries of the states of Minas Gerais
and São Paulo (c. 22o29’S; 45o04’W) (Olmos 2007), and at
Maromba (22o25’42”S; 44o37’10”S, 1,120 m) and Macieiras
(22o25’06”; 44o38’36”, 1,860 m), the last two inside Itatiaia
National Park, state of Rio de Janeiro (Pinto 1951, 1954). On
5 April 2007, MFV tape-recorded at least three individuals of
this species (not observed) in the highlands of Itatiaia Natio-
nal Park, in the hinterlands of Minas Gerais state, municipa-
lity of Itamonte (22o21’09”S; 44o44’09”W, 2,165 m). On 22
April 2007, a female was photographed by P. L. Viana in an
elfin forest at Serra do Funil, on the boundaries of Rio Preto
and Lima Duarte municipalities, Minas Gerais (21o57’49”S;
43o51’54”W, 1,590 m, Figure 17). This record represents an
extension of c. 100 km northeast from those conducted in Ita-
tiaia and c. 100 km northwest of Serra dos Órgãos.
Rough-legged Tyrannulet Tyranniscus burmeisteri (Caba-
nis & Heine, 1859)
On 4 June 2008, MFV collected a female specimen (DZU-
FMG-5940, Figure 18A) in a fragment of secondary forest in
the surroundings of Bento Rodrigues (20o12’24”S; 43o26’17”W,
945 m), Mariana municipality. Despite having been recorded
in the adjacent Serra do Caraça (Vasconcelos et al. 2003) ba-
sed on vocalizations, this is the first documented record for this
species in one of the interior-most ranges of the Atlantic Forest
(see maps in Ridgely & Tudor 1994 and Clay et al. 1998). On
25 September 2008, MFV heard the vocalizations of one indi-
vidual in a forest fragment in the municipality of Rio Acima
(20o06’47”S; 43o45’36”W, 892 m). One individual was col-
lected by LGM, MFV and E. C. Dutra (MCNA-1799, Figure
18B) on 9 October 2011 on the Taboões trail, within the RPPN
Santuário do Caraça, Santa Bárbara municipality (20o04’50”S;
43o40’15”W, 1,195 m). Between October 2011 and August
2012, LGM regularly recorded this species in many localities
within the Quadrilátero Ferrífero region, namely: on the eastern
slopes of the Serra da Gandarela, Santa Bárbara municipality

ding XC-189524); and on the western slope of Serra da Moeda,
Moeda municipality (20o16’04”S; 43o58’03”W, 1,238 m), where
one individual was also collected on 11 July 2012 (MCNA-495,
Figure 18B). The species was also tape-recorded (XC-189681)
by LGM and AP on 22 May 2014 on the eastern slope of Serra
da Piedade, Caeté municipality (19o48’52”S; 43o39’20”W, 1,275
m). Elsewhere, LGM heard its vocalizations on 29 August 2014
on the eastern slope of the Espinhaço Range, Serro municipality
(18o32’49”S; 43o25’21”W, 953 m).

Greenish Tyrannulet Phyllomyias virescens (Temminck,
1824)
On 24 September 2007 and 7 October 2007, MFV heard the
vocalizations and observed a couple of this species along the
trail to Tanque Grande (20o06’08”S; 43o29’36”W, 1,278 m), on
the Serra do Caraça. This is the first record of this species in
this ornithologically well studied area (Carnevalli 1980, Vas-
concelos 2001, Vasconcelos & Melo-Júnior 2001, Vasconcelos
et al. 2003). On 1 November 2009, MFV, FIAG and L. N. Sou-
za photographed, tape-recorded and collected a specimen in a
gallery forest located on the eastern slope of Serra da Moeda
(20o16’06”S; 43o56’07”W, 1,155 m), Itabirito municipality.
The specimen (DZUFMG-6527, Figure 19) was a male. On 3
September 2014 LGM and AP heard the species in a montane
semideciduous forest on the western slope of Serra de Itabirito,
Itabirito municipality (20o15’46”S; 43o53’23”W, 1,320 m). La-
ter, on 17 September 2014 one bird was attracted by playback
and photographed by LGM and AP in a riparian forest along
Ribeirão do Silva, a small stream east of Serra da Moeda, Ita-
birito municipality (20o19’44”S; 43o54’33”W, 1,060 m). The-
se appear to be the interior-most records for this species (see
maps in Ridgely & Tudor 1994 and Clay et al. 1998).
Large-headed Flatbill Ramphotrigon megacephalum
(Swainson, 1835)
On 1 March 2010, MFV and LGM collected a male (MCNA-
1315, Figure 20) in the understory dominated by Guadua bam-
boo in a semideciduous forest at Fazenda Estiva (18°53’41”S;
43°19’23”W, 656 m), Dom Joaquim municipality. Its tail was
in molt. There are probably only two previous records of this
species in Minas Gerais: a male collected by E. Kaempfer on
the main trail to Pico da Bandeira (AMNH-316955) at Serra do
Caparaó, on the boundary with Espírito Santo state (20°26’S;
41°47’W, Pinto 1952), and another specimen collected by
E. Snethlage at Fazenda Nova Aurora, Muriaé municipality
(21°08’S; 42°22’W) (Schneider & Sick 1962). It is important
to stress that Aleixo (1997) recorded the species in central Bra-
zil in a riparian forest with bamboo at Barra do Garças muni-
cipality, Mato Grosso state. Nevertheless, based on analysis
of tape-recordings, his record is probably from a relict Ama-
zonian, but notAtlantic, population (Aleixo 1997). Thus, the
record in Dom Joaquim is the interior-most for this species
in the Atlantic Forest region, extending its range c. 230 km to
the northwest (see maps in Ridgely & Tudor 1994 and IUCN
2015).
Grayish Mourner Rhytipterna simplex (Lichtenstein, 1823)
A little known species in Minas Gerais, the Grayish Mourner
occurs mainly in lowland forests. Two specimens (a couple)
obtained by G. T. Mattos in Rio Doce State Park on 9 Oc-
tober 1978 (DZUFMG-1489, 1490) represent one of the few
specimen-based records for the species in this hydrographic
basin (Pinto 1952). Additionally, FIAG collected a female
(MCNA-1956, Figure 21) at Fazenda Cachoeirão (21°56’02”S;
42°53’21”W, 391 m), Além Paraíba municipality, in the Rio
Paraíba do Sul hydrographic basin.
Long-billed Wren Cantorchilus longirostris longirostris
(Vieillot, 1819)
Apart from the subspecies C. l. bahiae, which is common
in northern Minas Gerais, associated with the Caatinga bio-
me (Kirwan et al. 2004, Vasconcelos & D’Angelo Neto 2007),
the nominate subspecies is restricted to the Atlantic Forest
lowlands (Grantsau 2010b) and is very rare in Minas Gerais

state. Ribon et al. (2003) considered it critically endangered at
Viçosa region. On 12 June 2010, LGM and AP observed and
tape-recorded (XC-293200) a couple of the species amongst
scrubs on the border of a submontane rain forest near Santana
do Deserto (21o58’59”S; 43o11’48”W, 470 m), at the medium
Rio Paraíba do Sul basin.
Half-collared Sparrow Arremon semitorquatus Swainson,
1838
GBM tape-recorded this species on 10 October 2006 in a semi-
deciduous forest bordered with Eucalyptus plantations in Santa
Maria de Itabira municipality (19°33’24”S; 43°03’14”W, 788 m).
On 8 April 2008, MFV observed and tape-recorded one individual
of this species in a montane forest in the surroundings of Sarame-
nha (20°23’47”S’; 43°32’43”W, 1,218 m), Ouro Preto municipa-
lity. On 4 April 2010, LGM and AP collected a male specimen
(MCNA-1321, Figure 22) in a secondary forest south of MG-129
road (20°10’33”S; 43°27’33”W, 941 m), Mariana municipality.
It is also important to mention that E. Snethlage also collected
a specimen of A. semitorquatus at Fazenda Taveira (20°17’S;
43°27’W), Mariana municipality (see Vanzolini 1992), close to
our records (Raposo 1997, Raposo & Parrini 1997). An additional
male (MCNA-4446, Figure 22) was also obtained by LGM and
AP at Bela Vista de Minas municipality, on 16 December 2014
(19°47’21”S’; 43°07’42”W, 670 m). On 12 November 2013 LGM
and AP heard and photographed the species on the right bank of
Rio Maynart, district of Santo Antônio do Salto, Ouro Preto mu-
nicipality (20°29’43”S; 43°28’46”W, 820 m). It was also tape-re-
corded (XC-293263) by LGM on 25 January 2011 at Fazenda Es-
tiva, Dom Joaquim municipality (18°53’09”S; 43°18’53”W, 650
m). Other records in Minas Gerais were obtained by LGM and AP
in Juiz de Fora (21°37’06”S; 43°25’21”W, 805 m, tape-recording
(XC-293276), Antônio Carlos (21°32’47”S; 43°47’06”W, 900 m)
and Passa-Vinte (22°09’55”S; 44°14’23”W, 790 m) municipali-
ties. Despite the published range maps of this species showing
its distribution to be associated with the coastal Atlantic Forest,
reaching Minas Gerais only on its eastern boundaries (Ridgely &
Tudor 1989, IUCN 2015), our record from Dom Joaquim muni-
cipality shows that the Half-collared Sparrow’s range extends c.
230 km westwards and also sets a new northern limit to its distri-
bution.
Buffy-fronted Seedeater Sporophila frontalis (Verreaux,
1869)
In Minas Gerais, the known range of this species is concen-
trated on the easternmost boundaries with the states of Espírito
Santo, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. These include records in
the following localities: Fazenda Campo Grande (not located),
Passa Tempo municipality (Mattos et al. 1991); São Miguel
do Anta municipality (Mattos et al. 1991); Rio Preto munici-
pality (Collar et al. 1992); Fazenda Ponderosa (not located),
Volta Grande municipality (Collar et al. 1992); Bocaina de
Minas municipality (Mattos et al. 1991); Serra do Brigadeiro
State Park (20o42’S, 42o29’W) (Collar et al. 1992, Simon et
al. 1999), Fazenda do Pinhão Assado (22°17’S, 44°52’W) and
Pousada Alsene (22°22’S, 44°42’W), both in Itamonte munici-
pality (Lombardi et al. 2012); Fazenda Duas Barras, Santa Ma-
ria do Salto municipality (Ribon et al. 2006); and Poço D’Anta
Municipal Biological Reserve (21o45’S, 43o19’W), Juiz de
Fora municipality (Manhães & Loures-Ribeiro 2011). On 5
February 2010, MFV observed and tape-recorded at least four
individuals in a montane forest located on the southern slope
of Serra do Caraça (20°09’06”S, 43°30’46”W, 1,120 m), Ma-
riana municipality. In this area there was an intense fruiting of
a bamboo species of the genus Chusquea. Between 25 March
and 6 April 2010, and between 18-29 August 2010, LGM and
AP recorded several individuals of this species during a mast-
-seeding of a bamboo (Merostachys sp.) in a large semideci-
duous forest fragment intermixed with abandoned Eucalyptus
plantations south of the MG-129 road, Mariana municipality
(20°10’33”S, 43°27’27”W, 940 m). On 31 March 2010, MFV
heard c. 30 individuals of this species in a forest with dense
stands of a bamboo mast-seeding (Merostachys sp.) north of
MG-129 road (20°10’00”S, 43°27’00”W, 920 m), Mariana mu-
nicipality. On 7 January 2011 LGM and AP tape-recorded one
individual singing in an abandoned Eucalyptus plantation next
to the MG-129 road, Ouro Preto municipality (20°14’24”S,
43°28’35”W, 790 m). Elsewhere, LGM, AP and RM recorded
the species on January 2010 and August 2011, during intense
fruiting of a bamboo (Merostachys sp.) in semideciduous and
riparian forests along the Rio Corrente Grande, Virginópolis
municipality (18°53’S, 42°42’W, 650 m). LGM, AP and RM
also recorded S. frontalis on January and July 2010, and Ja-

nuary and August 2011, in a large semideciduous forest frag-
ment on the left bank of Rio Guanhães, Dores de Guanhães
municipality (18°59’55”S, 42°56’51”W, 590 m), during in-
tense fruiting of a bamboo (Merostachys sp.). On 22 January
2011 one individual was attracted by playback and tape-recor-
ded (XC-293965) by LGM on the border of a semideciduous
forest in the Serra da Ferrugem, Conceição do Mato Dentro
municipality (19°02’18”S, 43°24’26”W, 985 m). No seeding
bamboos were observed on this occasion. Between 25-28 Fe-
bruary 2014, and 20-23 May 2014, LGM and AP observed and
photographed (Figure 23) several individuals of this species
during mast-seeding of a bamboo (Merostachys sp.) in a large
semideciduous forest fragment in the eastern slope of Serra da
Piedade, Caeté municipality (19°48’48”S, 43°39’14”W, 1,275
m). Between December 2011 and August 2012 LGM regularly
recorded this species during a mast-seeding event of a bamboo(Merostachys sp.) in many localities within the Quadrilátero
Ferrífero region, all located in the Rio das Velhas hydrographic
basin, namely: in gallery forests along the Rio de Pedras, Ita-
birito municipality (20o11’19”S; 43o46’21”W, 800 m); in the
western slopes of Serra da Gandarela, Rio Acima municipality
(20o03’55”S; 43o46’29”W, 996 m; 20o08’12”S; 43o43’22”W,
1,100 m and 20o08’22”S; 43o39’38”W, 1,350 m); in gallery
and riparian forests along the Rio das Velhas, Rio Acima muni-
cipality (20o10’09”S; 43o47’37”W, 800 m); on the eastern slo-
pes of Serra de Itabirito, Rio Acima municipality (20o10’23”S;
43o49’29”W, 950 m); at Condominium Pasárgada, Nova Lima
municipality (20o04’05”S; 43o56’38”W, 1,045 m), and at Fe-
chos Ecological Station, Nova Lima municipality (20o03’53”S;
43o57’43”W, 1,200 m and 20o04’14”S; 43o58’18”W, 1,375 m).
On 22 August 2012 a single individual was heard by LGM and
F. A. Valério in a seeding clump of exotic bamboo (Bambusa
sp.) in the Rio Manso Special Protection Area, Brumadinho
municipality (20o07’49”S; 44o16’46”W, 950 m). On 13 Febru-
ary 2015, MFV heard the typical species’ song in a montane
forest at Taboões, Serra do Caraça (20°04’37”S; 43°30’37”W,
1,222 m), Santa Bárbara municipality, despite the fact that no
seeding bamboos were observed. On 21 April 2015, MFV and
G. A. Silva tape-recorded another individual in a montane fo-
rest at Campo de Fora, also in the Serra do Caraça (20º06’53’’S;
43º31’00’’W, 1,504 m), Catas Altas municipality. This bird
was in a dense clump of Chusquea bamboo without seeding
(Santos et al. 2015).
Temminck’s Seedeater Sporophila falcirostris (Temminck,
1820)
The known range of this species in Minas Gerais is very si-
milar to that of Sporophila frontalis. There is an old specimen
(July 1936) from Lagoa Piçarra, Rio Casca, Caratinga (not
located) deposited in the Museu Nacional do Rio de Janeiro
(Collar et al. 1992). Recent records were made at Garganta
do Registro and Agulhas Negras Road, both in Itamonte mu-
nicipality (Lombardi et al. 2012); at Fazenda Duas Barras,
Santa Maria do Salto municipality, at Fazenda Mumbuca and
Fazenda das Araras, Ladainha and Novo Cruzeiro munici-
palities (Ribon et al. 2006); and at Poço D’Anta Municipal
Biological Reserve (21o45’S; 43o19’W), Juiz de Fora muni-
cipality (Manhães & Loures-Ribeiro 2011). On 9 June 2009
LGM photographed and tape-recorded a group of the species
during a bamboo (Merostachys sp.) mast-seeding event in a
semideciduous forest fragment along the banks of Rio Pi-
cão, Morro do Pilar municipality (19°14’36”S; 43°24’15”W,
670 m). LGM, AP and RM recorded the species on Janua-
ry 2010 and January 2011, during intense fruiting of a bam-
boo (Merostachys sp.) in semideciduous and riparian forests
along the Rio Corrente Grande, Virginópolis municipality
(18°53’S; 42°42’W, 650 m). LGM, AP and RM also recor-
ded S. falcirostris on January and July 2010, and January and
August 2011, in a large semideciduous forest fragment on
the left bank of Rio Guanhães, Dores de Guanhães municipa-
lity (18°59’55”S; 42°56’51”W, 590 m), during intense frui-
ting of a bamboo (Merostachys sp.). Elsewhere, on 8 June
2010 LGM and AP photographed a female of the species in
a dense clump of seeding bamboos (Merostachys sp.) in a
submontane rain forest near Santana do Deserto municipa-
lity (21o56’28”S; 43o13’33”W, 500 m). Between 25 March
and 6 April 2010, and between 18-29 August 2010, LGM
and AP recorded several individuals of this species during
the mast-seeding of a bamboo (Merostachys sp.) in a large
semideciduous forest fragment intermixed with abandoned
Eucalyptus plantations south of the MG-129 road, Mariana
municipality (20°10’33”S; 43°27’27”W, 940 m). Between
September 2011 and September 2012 LGM regularly recor-
ded this species during a mast-seeding event of a bamboo
(Merostachys sp.) in many localities within the Quadrilátero
Ferrífero region, all located in the Rio das Velhas hydrogra-
phic basin, namely: in gallery forests along the Rio de Pe-
dras, Itabirito municipality (20o11’19”S; 43o46’21”W, 800
m, Figure 24); on the western slopes of Serra da Gandarela,
Rio Acima municipality (20o08’12”S; 43o43’22”W, 1,100 m);
in gallery and riparian forests along the Rio das Velhas, Rio
Acima municipality (20o10’09”S; 43o47’37”W, 800 m); on
the eastern slopes of Serra de Itabirito, Rio Acima municipa-
lity (20o10’23”S; 43o49’29”W, 950 m); at Condominium Pa-
sárgada, Nova Lima municipality (20o04’05”S; 43o56’38”W,
1,045 m), and at Fechos Ecological Station, Nova Lima mu-
nicipality (20o03’53”S; 43o57’43”W, 1,200 m). On 8 October
2011, LGM, MFV and E. C. Dutra heard the vocalizations of
a single individual in a secondary semideciduous forest close
to a clump of the bamboo Guadua tagoara (not in seeding) at
Fazenda Bocaina (19°59’50”S; 43°28’18”W, 775 m), Santa

Bárbara municipality. On the next day, one individual was
heard among a dense clump of an exotic bamboo of the genus
Bambusa, in a nearby site of the same property (19°59’58”S;
43°28’14”W, 745 m).
Black-throated Grosbeak Saltator fuliginosus (Daudin,
1800)
This species has scarce documented records in the state of
Minas Gerais. It has been previously recorded in the Serra do
Itatiaia (Holt 1928, Pinto 1952), Serra do Brigadeiro (Simon
et al. 1999) and in four localities along the Rios Mucuri and
Jequitinhonha hydrographic basins, northeastern Minas Gerais
(Ribon et al. 2006). GBM observed and tape-recorded this spe-
cies on 10 October 2006 in a semideciduous forest intermixed
with riparian forests at Fazenda da Serra, Sem Peixe muni-
cipality (20º02’57”S; 42º52’48”W, 924 m). On 15 December
2014 LGM and AP tape-recorded (XC-293279) the species in
a semideciduous forest on the left bank of Rio Santa Bárbara,
along the boundaries between Itabira and Bela Vista de Minas
municipalities (19º46’33”S; 43º09’54”W, 635 m). These recor-
ds extend the Black-throated Grosbeak’s distribution c. 100 km
westward (IUCN 2015).
Yellow-green Grosbeak Caryothraustes canadensis (Lin-
naeus, 1766)
Yellow-green Grosbeak is a little known species in Minas
Gerais, with collected specimens by Pinto (1952) in Rio Pi-
racicaba and Rio Suçuí [sic]. Ribon et al. (2006) recorded the
species in five localities along the Rios Mucuri and Jequiti-
nhonha hydrographic basins, northeastern Minas Gerais. Since
we could not locate any additional specimen of this species in
the state, here we present two: an unsexed individual (DZU-
FMG-2257, Figure 25A) collected by G. T. Mattos at Joaíma
municipality on 12 January 1971, and a female (MCNA-1354,
Figure 25B) collected by A. C. F. Alves in a semideciduous fo-
rest at Fazenda do Sr. Carnielli (19º26’19”S; 41º10’41”W, 327
m), Itueta municipality, on 14 November 2009. This species
was also recorded by GBM in Volta Grande municipality in a
riparian forest at Rio Paraíba do Sul (21º48’08”S; 42º30’09”W,
120 m), between 20-23 November 2006, and on 11 December
2009, where flocks with more than three individuals were do-
cumented by tape-recordings and photographs.

Concluding Remarks
The state of Minas Gerais harbors three of the major mor-
phoclimatic domains of Brazil, namely the Atlantic Forest, the
Cerrado and the Caatinga (Drummond et al. 2005). The Atlan-
tic Forest covers roughly 41% of the state (IEF 2016), main-
ly represented by semideciduous forests (Oliveira Filho et al.
2006). Nevertheless, most range maps presented in field guides
and online databases usually depict some Atlantic Forest bird
species occurring only in the extreme eastern or southernparts
of the state, along the boundaries of Minas Gerais with Espí-
rito Santo, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Bahia. Although this
is correct for many species, especially those associated with
more humid rainforests, which actually occur in these parts of
the state, our records show that many Atlantic Forest taxa pe-
netrate the state, with their distributional limits reaching cen-
tral Minas Gerais, usually in the Espinhaço Mountain Range.
The Espinhaço Range generally coincides with the distri-
butional limits of the morphoclimatic domains that it crosses,
with the Atlantic Forest located in the east, and the Cerrado in
the west. The eastern slopes of the Espinhaço suffer the orogra-
phical effects from the penetration of hot and humid air masses
originating from the Atlantic Ocean (Gontijo 2008), fostering
the existence of humid forests on its oriental side (Ribeiro et
al. 2009). Many studies, made in different parts of the Espi-
nhaço Range, showed that a higher concentration of Atlantic
Forest endemics is found in its eastern slopes (Melo-Júnior et
al., 2001; Vasconcelos & D’Angelo Neto 2007; Rodrigues et
al., 2011; Carrara & Faria, 2012; Carrara et al. 2013; Mazzoni
2013). Accordingly, for many of the taxa recorded in our study,
it seems that the Espinhaço Range represents their most inland
distributional limit in Minas Gerais, such as the East Brazilian
Chachalaca Ortalis araucuan, Channel-billed Toucan Ram-
phastos vitellinus ariel, Vinaceous-breasted Parrot Amazona
vinacea, Spot-breasted Antvireo Dysithamnus stictothorax,
Plain-winged Woodcreeper Dendrocincla turdina, Black-bil-
led Scythebill Campylorhamphus falcularius, White-collared
Foliage-gleaner Anabazenops fuscus and Half-collared Spar-
row Arremon semitorquatus.
From a biogeographical perspective, this paper has filled
some gaps in the distributional knowledge of many bird taxa
that are either endemic or associated with the Atlantic Forest
in Minas Gerais. It also sheds light on specimens which are
rare or little represented in ornithological collections. The or-
nithological knowledge of Minas Gerais has increased rapidly
in the past few years, with many new papers been published
concerning range extensions and noteworthy bird records for
this state.
