Any one interested in the truth will be shock ed by the w ay American social engineers have systematically gone about destro ying the intellect of m illions of American children for the purpo se of leading the American people in to a socialist world go v ernment controlled b y behavior al and social scientists. Mrs . Iserbyt has also documented the gradual transformation of our once academically successful education system into one devoted to tr aining children to become compliant human resour ces to be used by gov ernment and industry for their o wn purposes. This is how fascist-socialist societies tr ain their children to become serv ants of their gov ernment masters . The successful implementation of this new philosophy of education will spell the end of the American dream of individual fr eedom and opportunity . The gov ernment will plan your life for you, and unless you comply with government restrictions and regulations your ability to pursue a car eer of y our own choice will be se ver ely limited. What is so mind boggling is that all of this is being \ue06cnanced by the American people themselves through their own taxes. In other w ords , the American people are underwriting the destruction of their own freedom and way of life by lavishly \ue06cnancing through federal grants the v ery social scientists who ar e undermining our national so v ereignty and pr eparing our children to become the dumbed-down vassals of the new world order . It reminds one of how the Nazis char ged their victims tr ain fare to their o wn doom. One of the interesting insights rev ealed by these documents is how the social engineers use a deliberately created education \u201c crisis\u201d to mo ve their agenda forward by offering r adical reforms that ar e sold to the public as \ue06cxing the crisis\u2014which they never do. The new reforms simply set the stage for the next crisis, which pro vides the pr etext for the next move forward. This is the dialectical process at work, a process our behavioral engineers have learned to xii xiii use very effectively . Its success depends on the ability of the \u201cchange agents\u201d to continually deceive the public which tends to belie v e anything the e xperts tell them. And so, our childr en continue to be at risk in America\u2019 s schools. They are at risk academically because of such programs as whole language, mastery learning, direct instruction, Skinnerian operant conditioning, all of which have created huge learning problems that ine vitably lead to what is commonly known as Attention De\ue06ccit Disor der and the drugging of four million children with the powerful drug Ritalin. Mrs . Iserbyt has dealt extensiv ely with the root causes of immorality in our society and the role of the public schools in the teaching of moral relativism (no right/no wrong ethics). She raises a red \ue06dag regar ding the current efforts of left-wing liberals and right-wing conservativ es (radical center) to come up with a new kid on the block\u2014\u201ccommon gr ound\u201d character education\u2014which will, under the micr oscope , turn out to be the same w armed-ov er v alues education alert parent groups have resisted for over \ue06cfty y ear s. This is a perfect ex ample of the Hegelian Dialectic at work. The reader will \ue06cnd in this book a plethor a of information that will leav e no doubt in the mind of the serious resear cher ex actly where the American education sy stem is headed. If we wish to stop this juggernaut towar d a socialist-fascist sy stem, then we must restor e educational freedom to America. Americans forget that the present government education sy stem started as a Prussian import in the 1840\u2019s\u2013\u20195 0\u2019s. It was a sy stem built on Hegel\u2019s belief that the state was \u201cGod\u201d walking on earth. The only wa y to restore educational freedom, and put education back into the hands of parents where it belongs, is to get the feder al gov ernment, with its coerciv e policies, out of education. The billions of dollars being spent by the federal go vernment to destro y educational freedom must be halted, and that can only be done b y getting American legislators to understand that the American people w ant to r emain a free people , in charge of their o wn lives and the education of their childr en. F or eword xii xiii PREF A CE Coexistence on this tightly knit earth should be viewed as an existence not only without wars\u2026 but also without [the gov ernment] telling us how to live, what to say , what to think, what to know , and what not to know . \u2014Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, fr om a speech giv en September 1 1, 1973 1 Educated men are as much superior to uneducated men as the living ar e to the dead. \u2014Aristotle , 384\u2013322 B .C. 2 F or ov er a twenty-\ue06cve-y ear period the research used in this chronology has been collected from man y sources: the United States Department of Education; international agencies; state agencies; the media; concerned educator s; parents; legislators , and talented r esearcher s with whom I have worked. In the process of gathering this information tw o beliefs that most Americans hold in common became clear: 1) If a child can read, write and compute at a reasonably pro\ue06ccient level, he will be able to do just about anything he wishes, enabling him to control his destiny to the extent that God allo w s (remain fr ee); 2) Providing such basic educational pro\ue06cciencies is not and should not be an expensiv e proposition. Since most Americans belie ve the second premise\u2014that pro viding basic educational pro\ue06cciencies is not and should not be an expensive proposition\u2014it becomes obvious that it is only a radical agenda, the purpose of which is to change v alues and attitudes (brain wash), that is the costly agenda. In other wor ds , brain washing by our schools and universities is what is bankrupting our nation and our children\u2019 s minds . In 1997 there wer e 46.4 million public school students. During 1993\u20131994 (the latest year s the statistics w er e available) the a verage per pupil expenditure was $6,330.00 in xiv xv 1996 constant dollars. Multiply the number of students b y the per pupil expenditure (using old-fashioned mathematical procedures) for a total K\u201312 budget per year of $293.7 billion dollars . If one adds the cost of higher education to this \ue06cgure , one arrives at a total budget per year of over half a trillion dollars . 3 The sorry result of such an incredibly large expenditur e\u2014the performance of American students\u2014is discussed in Pursuing Excellence\u2014A Study of U.S. T welfth Grade Mathematics and Science A chievement in International Context: Initial Findings fr om the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMMS), a report from the U.S. Department of Education (NCES 98\u2013049). Pur suing Excellence reads: A chiev ement of Students, Ke y Points: U.S. twelfth grader s scored below the international av erage and among the lowest of the 2 1 TIMSS nations in both mathematics and science general kno wledge in the \ue06cnal year of secondary school. (p. 24) Obviously , something is terribly wrong when a $6,330 per pupil expenditur e produces such pathetic results. This writer has visited private schools which charge $1,000 per year in tuition which enjo y superior academic r esults. P ar ents of home-schooled childr en spend a maximum of $1,000 per year and usually ha v e similar ex cellent results . There are many talented and respected resear chers and activists who ha v e carefully documented the \u201cweir d\u201d activities which have taken place \u201cin the name of education.\u201d Any opposition to change agent activities in local schools has invariably been met with cries of \u201cPro v e your case , document your statements,\u201d etc. Documentation, when presented, has been ignored and called incomplete. The classic response by the education establishment has been, \u201cY ou\u2019re taking that out of context!\u201d\u2014e ven when presented with an entire book which uses their own wor ds to detail ex actly what the \u201cresister s\u201d are claiming to be true . \u201cR esister s\u201d\u2014usually parents\u2014ha ve been called ev ery name in the book. P arents hav e been told for ov er thirty years , \u201cY ou\u2019re the only parent who has ev er complained.\u201d The media has been convinced to join in the attack upon common sense view s, effectively discrediting the perspectiv e of w ell-informed citizens. The desire by \u201cresisters\u201d to pr ov e their case has been so strong that they hav e continued to amass\u2014over a thirty- to \ue06cfty-year period\u2014what must surely amount to tons of materials containing irrefutable proof, in the education change agents\u2019 o wn wor ds, of deliber ate , malicious intent to achie ve behavioral changes in students/parents/society which have nothing to do with commonly understood educational objectives . Upon delivery of such proof, \u201cresister s\u201d are consistently met with the \u201cshoot the messenger\u201d stonewalling response by teachers , school boards , superintendents, state and local of\ue06ccials , as well as the supposedly objective institutions of academia and the pr ess . This resister\u2019 s book, or collection of r esearch in book form, was put together primarily to satisfy my o wn need to see the various components which led to the dumbing down of the United States of America assembled in chronological order\u2014in writing. Even I, who had observe d these weir d activities taking place at all le vels of gov ernment, w as reluctant to accept a malicious intent behind each individual, chronological activity or innov ation, unless I could connect it with other , similar activities taking place at other times. This book, which makes such connections, has pr o vided for me a much-needed sense of closure . the deliberate dumbing down of america is also a book for m y children, grandchildr en, and great-grandchildr en. I want them to know that there wer e thousands of Americans who may not ha ve died or been shot at in ov erseas w ars , but were shot at in small-town \u201cwar s\u201d Preface
