PAST CONTINUOUS

AFFIRMATIVE SENTENCES

Usamos o Past Continuous, também conhecido como Past Progressive, para nos
referir a uma ação que estava acontecendo no passado durante um período de tempo.

Formar frases no Past Continuous é bem simples. Para isso, precisamos de um sujeito,
um verbo to be (was/were) e o verbo principal no gerúndio (ou seja, terminado em
“ing”).

Por exemplo:

SUBJECT TO BE VERB(ing)
She + was + dancing

SUBJECT TO BE VERB(ing)
They + were + studying

Temos:
She was dancing.
(Ela estava dançando)

They were studying.
(Eles estavam estudando)

NEGATIVE SENTENCES

Para fazer frases negativas no Past Continuous, basta colocarmos o “not” depois do
verbo to be (was / were), ou usar suas formas contraídas (wasn’t / weren’t).

Por exemplo:

SUBJECT TO BE VERB(ing)
She + was not + dancing

SUBJECT TO BE VERB(ing)
They + were not + studying

Temos, em suas formas contraídas:

She wasn’t dancing.
(Ela não estava dançando)

They weren’t studying.
(Eles não estavam estudando)

INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES

Para fazer frases interrogativas usando o Past Continuous, basta movermos o verbo to
be (was/were) para o início da frase.

Por exemplo:

TO BE SUBJECT VERB(ing)
Was + she + dancing?

TO BE SUBJECT VERB(ing)
Were + they + studying?

Temos:
Was she dancing?
(Ela estava dançando?)

Were they studying?
(Eles estavam estudando?)
