PRESENT PARTICIPLE CLAUSES WITH PREPOSITIONS
Dialog: "It was actually in keeping with a long tradition of celebrating the harvest and giving thanks for a
successful bounty of crops."
A present participle clause is a clause that begins with a verb in the -ing form. We use these clauses
to give information about timing, causes, and results of events. When paired with the preposition "in"
the clause indicates "cause". When paired with "by" it indicates "the method or means used". When
paired with "on" the clause indicates "when".
 
1) PRESENT PARTICIPLE CLAUSE WITH "IN"
It was in doing the research for the project that I realized how little we knew about the subject.
(doing the research caused me to realize)
In choosing Barack Obama as President of their country, Americans have regained respect from
other nations. (choosing Barak Obama caused Americans to regain respect)
 
2) PRESENT PARTICIPLE CLAUSE WITH "BY"
We motivated the girls to get better grades in school by promising them a trip to Disneyworld this
summer. (promising a trip was the method used)
By giving the employees the day off, it gave us the opportunity to reorganize the office. (giving them
the day off was the method used)
 
3) PRESENT PARTICIPLE CLAUSE WITH "ON"
On arriving in Rio de Janeiro Melissa realized that she had not brought the proper clothing for such
hot and humid weather. (when she arrived)
On walking by the meeting room it dawned on Dave that he had forgotten about the team meeting.
(when he walked by)

game on TV, and kids complaining to their parents that they're too old to sit at the kids
table. Thanksgiving is the most celebrated holiday in the U.S. It's so special because it's
a day when friends and family, no matter what their creeds or color, come together to
celebrate and give thanks for all that they have. But what about the first Thanksgiving
