Paul left the party at 10.30 and Sarah arrived at 11 o’clock. So: When Sarah arrived at the party, Paul wasn’t there. He had gone home. 2. 1. She was diagnosed with sarcoma in her right thigh. (1st event) 2. The doctors told Christina not worry about the ‘lump’ in her leg. (2nd event) Doctors had told Christina not worry about the lump in her leg before she was diagnosed with synovial sarcoma. 3. 4. 5. (From: dictionary.cambridge.org) We use the past perfect simple with action verbs to emphasize the completion of an event. We use the past perfect continuous to: a) show that an event or action in the past was still continuing. The builders had put up the scaffolding around the house. The builders had been putting up the scaffolding when the roof fell in. b) focus on the activity and duration of the activity. I’d waited an hour for the bus. I’d been waiting an hour for the bus. c) imply that something is temporary. She’d always lived with her parents. (we don’t know how long) She’d been living with her parents. (Suggests a temporary situation) 6. 1. Use the sentences to complete the paragraphs below. These sentences are in the order in which they happened – so (1) happened before (2), (2) before (3) etc. The paragraph begins with the underline sentence, so sometimes you need the past perfect. a) (1) Somebody broke into the office during the night.
