When Netflix was founded, the market for home video rental was fragmented and dominated by small retail rental stores. Customers would rent movies, mainly on VHS tapes, from these stores for a certain period of time and pay a fee of $3 to $4 per rented movie. The market leader at that time was Blockbuster, a giant rental store, which had a strategy based on the perception that movie rentals were largely impulse decisions.
