The function of a Zener diode is to regulate voltage in electronic circuits. It is always polarized in the reverse direction, meaning that the positive terminal of the diode is connected to the negative side of the circuit. When the voltage across the Zener diode reaches a certain threshold, called the Zener voltage, it starts conducting in the reverse direction. This allows it to maintain a constant voltage across its terminals, even when the input voltage fluctuates. This makes Zener diodes useful for voltage regulation and protection against voltage spikes.
