a) Request information from public and private institutions that allows evaluating the conditions under which treatments are carried out.
b) Supervise, ex officio or by complaint from individuals, the conditions of hospitalization for mental health reasons, in the public and private spheres.
c) Evaluate that involuntary hospitalizations are duly justified and do not last longer than the minimum necessary time, being able to make the relevant complaints in case of irregularities and eventually appeal the decisions of the judge.
d) Control that referrals made outside the community comply with the requirements and conditions established in article 30 of this law.
e) Inform the Application Authority periodically about the evaluations carried out and propose the relevant modifications.
f) Require judicial intervention in irregular situations.
g) Make presentations to the Magistracy Council or the Organism that in each jurisdiction evaluates and sanctions the conduct of judges in situations where there are irregularities.
h) Make recommendations to the Application Authority.
i) Make proposals for modification to legislation.

De acordo com a Lei Nacional de Saúde Mental nº 26.657, as funções do Órgão Revisor são: a) Solicitar informações de instituições públicas e privadas que permitam avaliar as condições em que os tratamentos são realizados. b) Supervisionar, ex officio ou por denúncia de indivíduos, as condições de internação por motivos de saúde mental, nas esferas pública e privada. c) Avaliar se as internações involuntárias estão devidamente justificadas e não duram mais do que o tempo mínimo necessário, podendo fazer as denúncias pertinentes em caso de irregularidades e, eventualmente, recorrer das decisões do juiz. d) Controlar se os encaminhamentos feitos para fora da comunidade cumprem os requisitos e condições estabelecidos no artigo 30 desta lei. e) Informar periodicamente à Autoridade de Aplicação sobre as avaliações realizadas e propor as modificações relevantes. f) Requerer intervenção judicial em situações irregulares. g) Fazer apresentações ao Conselho da Magistratura ou ao Organismo que em cada jurisdição avalia e sanciona a conduta dos juízes em situações em que haja irregularidades. h) Fazer recomendações à Autoridade de Aplicação. i) Fazer propostas de modificação à legislação.
