De acordo com a teoria de Bourdieu, o papel da escolarização na sociedade contemporânea é o de reproduzir e legitimar as desigualdades sociais. O diploma não garante necessariamente a posição esperada em uma sociedade altamente industrializada. Alunos de origens sociais mais elevadas têm uma vantagem na ocupação de posições privilegiadas na sociedade. O capital cultural exigido pelas escolas é universal e não valoriza a cultura das pessoas pobres.
