The physical characteristics of ceramic materials are a consequence of the chemical bonds that occur in them, the ionic and covalent bonds attribute to this material a chemical stability. However, ceramics still present fragility when exposed to sudden stresses, such as falls or tensile and compressive stresses. Choose the alternative that justifies the fragility of ceramic materials:

A) Heating the ceramic after its manufacture leaves it with internal tensions, causing them to be propagated in contact with internal tensions, leading the material to fracture.
B) Ceramic materials have defects in their structure such as porosity, microcracks, grain boundaries, among others. This condition causes them to undergo internal stresses that, when in contact with external stresses, propagate and lead to fracture.
X C) Ceramic materials become more fragile because their composition is based on clay.
D) None of the alternatives.
E) As clay is hydrated, the water present in the structure of the ceramic material evaporates when it is cooked, causing hydrogen cracks to form in the structure of the material. These cracks propagate throughout the material, and when they come into contact with external stresses, they cause the material to break.

A alternativa correta que justifica a fragilidade dos materiais cerâmicos é a alternativa B) Ceramic materials have defects in their structure such as porosity, microcracks, grain boundaries, among others. This condition causes them to undergo internal stresses that, when in contact with external stresses, propagate and lead to fracture.
