What are the clinical manifestations of chronic arterial obstructive disease?

The primary symptom of chronic arterial obstructive disease is intermittent claudication or pain when walking.
People with the disorder typically complain of pain in the calf because the gastrocnemius muscle consumes more oxygen than any other muscle group in the leg during walking.
Other activities, such as swimming, cycling, and climbing stairs, use other muscle groups and may not cause the same degree of discomfort as walking.
Other signs of ischemia include atrophic changes, thinning of the skin and subcutaneous tissues of the leg, and a decrease in the size of the leg muscles.
In general, the feet are cold, while the popliteal and pedal pulses are weak or absent.
The color of the limb becomes intensely reddish when the leg is in the dependent position, due to the intensification of autoregulatory blood flow and the increase in gravitational action on perfusion pressure.
When the extent of the reduction in blood flow prevents the minimum needs of the muscles and nerves from being met, ischemic pain at rest, ulceration, and gangrene occur.
With the development of tissue necrosis, typically a strong pain arises in the region of skin rupture, which worsens at night and with elevation of the limb, improving in the orthostatic position.
