What is the function of a BOOST converter?

A BOOST converter is a step-up switching regulator that increases a lower input voltage to a higher output voltage.
It has an inductor at the input that absorbs sudden variations in the network voltage ('spikes') and facilitates obtaining the desired current waveform.
Energy is stored in the output capacitor, which operates at high voltage (Vo>E), allowing for relatively small capacitance values.
The waveform control is maintained for every instantaneous value of the input voltage, including zero.
The input current is not interrupted (in continuous conduction mode), minimizing EMI filter requirements.
The transistor must withstand a voltage equal to the output voltage and its activation is simple, as it can be done by a low voltage signal referenced to ground.

The function of a BOOST converter is to increase a lower input voltage to a higher output voltage. It achieves this by utilizing a step-up switching regulator configuration. Here are some key points about the function of a BOOST converter:

  • It operates with an inductor at the input, which helps absorb sudden voltage variations (spikes) from the power source and facilitates achieving the desired current waveform.
  • The BOOST converter stores energy in an output capacitor, which operates at a higher voltage (Vo > E). This allows for the use of relatively small capacitance values.
  • The waveform control is maintained for every instantaneous value of the input voltage, even when it reaches zero.
  • In continuous conduction mode, the input current is not interrupted, which helps minimize the requirements for an EMI filter.
  • The transistor used in the BOOST converter must be able to withstand a voltage equal to the output voltage. Its activation is relatively simple, as it can be done by a low voltage signal referenced to ground.

In summary, a BOOST converter is used to step up and regulate voltage, making it useful in various applications where a higher output voltage is required than the available input voltage.
