Para nomear um ácido, podemos seguir duas possibilidades: 1. Conhecer o nome do ânion presente no ácido e fazer uma substituição no final do nome do ânion, adicionando o sufixo -ídrico. Por exemplo, o ácido clorídrico (HCl) é formado pelo ânion cloreto (Cl-). 2. Começar pelos ácidos cujos nomes terminam em -ico e, adicionando ou removendo oxigênio, podemos chegar aos nomes dos outros ácidos. Por exemplo, o ácido sulfúrico (H2SO4) é formado pelo ânion sulfato (SO4²-) e o ácido sulfuroso (H2SO3) é formado pelo ânion sulfito (SO3²-).
