O sistema respiratório é composto pelo nariz, faringe, laringe, traqueia, brônquios e pulmões. Os pulmões contêm a árvore brônquica, que são os ramos das vias aéreas que vão dos brônquios primários aos bronquíolos terminais. A zona respiratória dos pulmões é a região que contém os alvéolos, pequenos sacos com paredes finas onde ocorre a troca gasosa, incluindo os bronquíolos respiratórios. O oxigênio e o dióxido de carbono passam entre os alvéolos e os capilares pulmonares por difusão através da membrana respiratória (fina).
