Composition - Book review - 1984 (George Orwell)
The book I most loved is 1984, a dystopian romance written by George
Orwell. The book's story works like a metaphor of life under authoritarian regimes
and that's why I like it that much: because you can think about the reality while you
have a fun time reading the book.
The protagonist of the story, Winston Smith, works for the "Truth Ministry '', a
government agency that, ironically, is responsible for hiding every kind of
publication, of the present or the past, that could be against the party's ideology.
Another important part of the story is the "Big Brother", the main leader of the
government, who is always watching everything the citizens do, in order to verify if
they are breaking any rule of the dictatorship.
Along the book and throughout all the problems Winston faced in order to
confront the authoritarian government, we can remember many historical cases of
dictatorships, like Italian fascism and German nazism, that have many similar
characteristics of the book. And that's why this romance is so incredible, it mobilizes
the reality with a perfect balance among fiction, past, present and the fears of the
future.
The book 1984 is also a good way to make people aware of the problems
involving authoritarian regimes, and I strongly recommend it for everyone who
wants to start understanding more about politics, because it is a funny and simple
way to do it.
