According to Labov, narratives are composed of six different components: abstract, orientation, complicating action, evaluation, resolution and coda. Choose the option that best justifies the reason why the selected fragment can be classified as part of the orientation of hooks' narrative:
It was clearly the Gloria Jean of my tormented and anguished childhood that I wanted to be rid of, the girl who was always wrong, always punished, always subjected to some humiliation or other, always crying, the girl who was to end up in a mental institution because she could not be anything but crazy, or so they told her. She was the girl who sat a hot iron on her arm pleading with them to leave her alone, the girl who wore her scar as a brand marking her madness. Even now I can hear voices of my sisters saying, "mama make Gloria stop crying".

Because it provides readers with important orienting information, allowing them to take a peek at hooks' childhood experiences and, thus, understand the narrator's longing to talk about her past and, by such means, kill her former self.

Because it focuses exclusively on hooks¿ evaluation of the events that marked her childhood, solely aiming at transmitting their emotional impact to those who read her text.

Because it summarizes the main topic of hooks¿ narrative, answering the question "what happened?".

Because it signals the end of hooks' narrative, bringing readers back from her childhood memories to the present time.

Because it wraps up hooks' narrative, bringing it to an end with a brief description of her final decisions.

Bell hooks was a feminist antiracist North American scholar, who preferred to spell her name with lowercase letters to spotlight her ideas rather than her own self. Before she died in December 2021, hooks wrote several books on topics such as race, gender and teaching as a transgressive and liberatory practice. The excerpt below was retrieved from the chapter Writing Autobiography, in her book Talking Back: Thinking Feminist, Thinking Black, in which she discusses her experiences with writing about her own past. Choose the option that best justifies the reason why the selected fragment can be classified as an abstract:
To me, telling the story of my growing-up years was intimately connected with the longing to kill the self I was without really having to die. I wanted to kill that self in writing. Once that self was gone-out of my life forever-I could more easily become the me of me.
Retrieved from: hooks, bell. Talking Back: Thinking Feminist, Thinking Black. Chapter 22: Writing Autobiography. Routledge: New York, 2015.

Because it provides a final resolution for hook¿s longing to kill her former self, the girl from the rough years of her childhood, and led to the writing of her autobiography.

Because it provides basic information on the time, place and characters of hooks¿ narrative.

Because it signals the end of hooks¿ narrative, bringing the reader back from her childhood memories to the present time.

Because it quickly outlines the bond between hook¿s longing to kill her former self, the girl from the rough years of her childhood, and her drive towards writing her autobiography, thus summarizing the main topic of her narrative.

Because it contains clues on the narrative¿s main characters, briefly sketching the identities of those who played a role in hooks¿ childhood experiences.

Labov (2013, p. 15) argues that tensed verbs are at "the heart of narrative construction". While narratives usually make use of past tenses, other structures can also be used. Alternatively, for instance, past perfect tenses may also be chosen in narratives. LABOV, William. The Language of Life and Death. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2013.

Read the extracts (retrieved from: hooks, bell. Talking Back: Thinking Feminist, Thinking Black. Chapter 22: Writing Autobiography. Routledge: New York, 2015) and choose the one which could be rewritten using the past perfect:

"I could more easily become the me of me".

"The longing to tell one's story and the process of telling is symbolically a gesture of longing to recover the past in such a way that one experiences both a sense of reunion and a sense of release".

"I remembered that we played with this toy only at my grandfather's house, that we shared it, that I would ride it and my brother would push me".

"Remembering was part of a cycle of reunion, a joining of fragments, "the bits and pieces of my heart" that the narrative made whole again".

"Writing the autobiographical narrative enabled me to look at my past from a different perspective and to use this knowledge as a means of self-growth and change in a practical way".

The sentences below describe academic research. Analyse the verb choices and structures and choose the alternative which best compares them:
(1) The term was coined by the aforementioned linguist.
(2) Over the last decade, various studies have been carried out in order to investigate such concepts.

The present simple tense would be more suitable for the first sentence.

The verb tenses in the sentences differ because the first one mentions a single study, while the second refers to areas of inquiry during a period of time.

Only the verb tense in the second structure is adequate for scientific papers, as it alludes to more voices of authority.

Both assertions were written in the active voice, so as to highlight the voices of authority responsible for the studies.

The assertions do not differ in terms of style nor in relation to verb tense choice.

Mark the correct statement regarding the rhetorical question present in the expository text below.
"These days, swapping a passion role for a less-interesting job with better pay and benefits could well make sense. Is it time to end the stigma of 'selling your soul'?"

It consists of a cliché way of starting an expository text.

It helps engage readers and create expectation, functioning as a reflection which is core in the text.

The quote functions as a voice of authority which grants credibility to the thesis statement.

The use of a famous saying is not adequate in the paragraph, because evidence to support a thesis should be scientific rather than based on common sense lore.

The thesis statement leads to a negative answer to such question.

In academic texts, even when expressing our opinionon a subject, be it in an expository or argumentative essay, referencing other works is paramount.
Read these statements concerning in-text citations and label each one as either True (T) or False (F).
1. Highly recommended in academic expository genres, they are not appropriate in genres such as feature stories and news articles with inverted pyramids.
2. Direct citations are common in feature stories, as they shed light on people who provide a human touch to the theme tackled.
3. In academic texts, their format does not change in case they exceed three lines.

The following extract was taken from an article which aims at problematizing ideological textual disputes in Brazil. Read it and choose the alternative which best describes the authors¿ argumentation based on their lexical-grammatical choices.
"However useful, Avritzer's (2019) description of the democratic pendulum seems unable to shed light on the current paradoxes of democracy. The pendulum does not move linearly. Rather, Brazilian democracy might be better described as a friction between distinct scalar projects (Carr and Lempert, 2016) in which the maintenance or disruption of cisheteropatriarchal orders are at stake." Retrieved from https://www.scielo.br/j/tla/a/RxvVtTrjZFvVHdhYDfsJHCs/?lang=en

The weaker verb "seem" and the modal "might" are not appropriate in academic genres.

The contrasting connector "however" indicates that the authors do not believe the metaphor of the "pendulum" to be useful.

The authors contend that the notion of "friction" is more appropriate to the Brazilian context than the one of "pendulum", as the expression "Rather" and "better described" indicate.

The authors suggest in their argumentation that the notion of "pendulum" is inappropriate irrespectively of the context, construing a counter-argumentation against it.

The adjective "useful" is used to provide an argument to support the transposition of the notion of "pendulum" to Brazil.

Swales and Feak in the book Academic Writing for Graduate Students, identify three rhetorical moves that should guide the writing of the introduction to argumentative texts as well as the building up of the thesis statement. Mark the alternative with the adequate description of the three rhetorical moves as outlined by Swales and Feak:

	(1) Indicating a gap in the previous research; (2) raising questions about it; and (3) extending previous knowledge.

	(1) Attracting the readers' curiosity; (2) summarizing the main point of the research; and (3) making room for a balanced account of the controversy tackled by your paper.

	(1) Establishing a research territory; (2) establishing a niche; and (3) extending previous knowledge.

	(1) Outlining the purpose and the nature of the research; (2) announcing its principal findings; and (3) indicating the structure of the research paper.

	(1) Establishing a research territory; (2) establishing a niche; and (3) occupying the niche.

Argumentative discourse is at the heart of academic writing. Research space is one of the key concepts for this genre. Choose the option that best defines the concept of research space:

The research space is the part of a given text whose purpose is to encapsulate the main ideas of the text.

The research space has to do with the research territory your study is meant to fill in and the contributions it has been designed to offer.

The research space is supposed to comprise the sequence of arguments posed by the author to support his viewpoint on the subject discussed.

The objective of the research space is to promote an unbiased overview of the matter studied and to offer a balanced and impartial account of the phenomena described.

The research space circumscribes the contrasting perspectives that argumentative writing is supposed to scrutinize.
