Past Simple Past Continuous
● It is used to talk about actions 
in progress at a specific point 
in the past.
● Past simple indicates past actions 
that have already finished, often 
with time expressions (yesterday, 
last,ago, past dates,etc).
Sub + Verb(ed)
Sub + did not/didn´t + Verb 
Did + Sub + Verb?
Ex.
- On October, the rescue started.
- It all happened in June.
- We got home at midnight.
- I met her three years ago.
I , he, she, i t + WAS/WASN´T + Verb(ing) 
We, you, they + WERE/WEREN´T + Verb(ing)
WAS + I , he, she, i t + Verb(ing)? 
WERE + we, you, they + Verb(ing)?
Ex.
- He was watching the news.
- You were watching the news.
How do we form Past Simple?
● POSITIVE FORM
It is formed with the subject + the verb in the past simple.
I l i ved i n I t a l y l a s t year.Ex.
● NEGATIVE FORM
The auxiliary DID is used for negative forms, with the verb in the infinitive 
without the “TO”.
Ex. I did not/didn ´t work l a s t weekend.
● INTERROGATIVE FORM
We use auxiliary DID for questions, with the verb in the infinitive form 
without the “TO”.
Ex. Did you work last weekend?
How do we form Past Continuous?
● POSITIVE FORM
It is formed with the subject + auxiliary WAS O WERE + the gerund ending in
ING of the corresponding verb.
Ex. You were watching TV.
● NEGATIVE FORM
We use the auxiliary WAS/WERE + NOT + the gerund ending in ING of the 
corresponding verb.
Ex. You were not/weren’t watching TV.
● INTERROGATIVE FORM
We use auxiliary WAS OR WERE + the subject + the gerund ending in ING of the 
corresponding verb.
Ex. Were you watching TV?
