BACKUP Update: 31MAY2022 | Duration 15 minutes | 15. Backup (Optional) 15.1 Objectives After completing this section, you will have Azure Backup enabled for PoC VMs in your Azure subscription. 15.2 Prerequisites To perform this exercise the following prerequisites are required: 1. Internet connectivity 2. A valid Azure Subscription 3. Completed the Implementing Proof of Concept Environment section. 4. Access to the Azure Portal https://portal.azure.com and permissions to perform the operations with the Azure subscription owner role. 5. Microsoft Defender for Cloud (Enhanced Security Features) for Servers (trial can be enabled for 30 days) 15.3 Deployment Steps The Azure Backup service backs up data to the Microsoft Azure cloud. You can back up on-premises machines and workloads, as well as Azure virtual machines (VMs). To Backup Azure VMs, perform the following steps: 1. Sign in to the Azure portal at https://portal.azure.com using the Contoso Cloud Administrators group credentials. https://portal.azure.com/ https://portal.azure.com/ Activate Azure with Administration and Governance Proof of Concept Guide Page 5 2. In the Azure portal, from left navigation pane click All services. In the list of resources, type Recovery Services Vaults. As you begin typing, the list filters based on your input. Select Recovery Services Vaults 3. Select the vault that was deployed as part of the PoC environment. Select Backup policies from the recovery services vault settings. Figure: Azure Backup 4. Create a new Azure Backup Policy for Azure Virtual Machine with the following configuration settings: – Policy sub type: Standard – Policy Name: PoCAzureVMPolicy – Frequency: Daily – Time: 10:00 pm or 22:00 (depending on your regional time settings) – Time Zone: (Select your time zone. The default will be (UTC). In this example, we will use (UTC-05:00) Eastern Time (US & Canada) – Retain instant recovery snapshot(s) for: 2 days – Retention of daily backup point: For 7 days – Retention of weekly backup point: un-checked – Retention of monthly backup point: un-checked – Retention of yearly backup point: un-checked Figure: Azure Backup Activate Azure with Administration and Governance Proof of Concept Guide Page 7 6. Sign in to the Azure portal at https://portal.azure.com using Contoso Infrastructure Administrators credentials. 7. In the Azure portal, from the left navigation pane click All services. In the list of resources, type Virtual Machines. As you begin typing, the list filters based on your input. Select Virtual Machines. 8. Select the CZ###APPNPWES01 Virtual Machine from the list and from the VM settings select Backup. Configure the Backup settings for the VM and then click Enable: – Recovery Services vault: Select existing (select recovery services vault that was created as part of the PoC environment) – Choose a backup policy: Select the Policy that was just created in previous steps Figure: Azure Backup 9. Enable Azure Backup for the other WES VM: CZ###APPNPWES02 using the same steps. 12. In the Azure portal, from left navigation pane click All services. In the list of resources, type Recovery Services Vaults. As you begin typing, the list filters based on your input. Select Recovery Services Vaults. 13. Selectthe vault that was deployed part of the PoC environment. Select Backup jobs from the recovery services vault settings. Click on the View details link in the Details column to review the Sub tasks Status of the backup process. Figure: Azure Backup The initial backup from each VM can take approximately 1 hour.
