WISH: WISHES ARE SOMETHING THAT WE ALL HAVE AND WE ALL MAKE. IF IT'S RAINING, 
PEOPLE SAY: ”I WISH IT WASN’T RAINING!” 
• WISHES ABOUT THE PRESENT: these wishes use a past tense to express a feeling about the 
present. When the subordinate clause refers to the same time as the main clause. 
 
WISH + SIMPLE PAST (present) 
 
1. I WISH I KNEW THE ANSWER! (= If I knew the answer, it would be better)

clause refers to a later time than the main clause.
