Repare que, diferente de four (4) e fourteen (14) e seus respectivos ordinais, forty (40) e fortieth (40th) não têm “u”. 2. Em português, duzentos (200) e todos os múltiplos de 100 vão para o plural; em inglês, esses números não adquirem a forma do plural (“s”) e o plural é indicado na coisa a que fazem referência. Ex: More than three-hundred students are taking this course. [Mais de trezentos alunos estão fazendo o curso.] 3. Porém, os números adquirem a forma do plural (“s”) em expressões como: dezenas, centenas, milhares e milhões de pessoas etc. Ex: Hundreds of thousands of people were affected by the Israel-Hamas war. [Centenas de milhares de pessoas foram afetadas pela guerra entre Israel e Hamas.] 4. Na língua inglesa, a palavra dozen (dozens pl.), embora signifique literalmente “uma dúzia”, é usada também como correspondente da expressão dezena ou dezenas em português. Ex: Dozens of cars are stuck in the traffic jam. [Dezenas de carros estão presos no engarrafamento.] 5. Porém, quando for dezenas de milhares/milhões, a expressão será tens of thousands/millions. Ex: Tens of millions of Brazilians live in poverty. [Dezenas de milhões de brasileiros vivem na pobreza.] *pl. = plural 7 – seven / seventh - 7th 17 – seventeen / seventeenth -17th 50 – fifty / fiftieth - 50th 8 – eight / eighth - 8th 18 – eighteen / eighteenth - 18th 60 – sixty / sixtieth - 60th 9 – nine / ninth - 9th 19 – nineteen / nineteenth - 19th 70 – seventy / seventieth - 70th 10 – ten / tenth – 10th 20 – twenty / twentieth - 20th 80 – eighty / eightieth - 80th Regra geral, adicionar “s” ao substantivo. 1 car – 10 cars 1 friend – 3 friends 1. Substantivos terminados em ch, sh, s, ss, x e z, adicionam “es” para formar o plural: Box - boxes Class – classes Bus – buses Brush – brushes beach – beaches 2. Substantivos terminados em “y”, precedidos de consoante, trocam “y” por “i” e acrescentam “es”. Baby – babies Fly – flies Lady – ladies Library – libraries Sky – skies Activity - activities *substantivos terminados em “y”, precedidos de vogal, adicionam apenas o “s” para formar o plural, seguindo a regra geral. Guy – guys Bay – bays Days – days Plural of Nouns [Plural dos Substantivos] 3. Alguns substantivos terminados em “o”, acrescentam “s” para formar o plural: Piano - pianos radio - radios Zoo – zoos Photo – photos zero - zeros 4. Outros substantivos terminados em “o”, acrescentam “es” para formar o plural: Tomato – tomatoes Potato – potatoes Hero – horoes Torpedo – torpedoes Veto - vetoes 5. Há outros substantivos terminados em “o”, que admitem as duas formas: Mosquito – mosquitos/mosquitoes Buffalo – Buffalos/buffaloes Tornado – tornados/tornadoes 6. Substantivos terminados em “f ou fe”, trocam “f/fe” por “ves”. Life – lives Wife – wives Knife – knives Thief – thieves Leaf – leave EXCEPTIONS: roof – roofs; proof – proofs, chief – chiefs, cliff – cliffs etc. IRREGULAR PLURALS Mouse – mice; louse – lice; ox – oxen, person – people (persons too), man – men, woman – women, child – children, foot – feet, tooth – teeth, goose – geese, fish - fish etc. Plural of Nouns [Plural dos Substantivos] Plural of Nouns in Practice Some Examples of Plurals 1. I have one child, but my brother has three children. 2. John has a dog and his sister has two dogs. 3. Kate saw a man fighting three men in the park. 4. I can see a lot of mosquitos around me right now and one mosquito bit me. 5. In the Brazilian Supreme Court, STF, there are ten judges at the moment - one woman and nine men – and there are thirty-one judges in the Superior Court of Justice (STJ) - six women and Twenty-five men right now.
