Apple has proposed a suite of 13 new emojis “to better represent individuals with disabilities”. “Currently, emoji provide a 
wide range of options, but may not represent the experiences of those with disabilities”, Apple wrote in its proposal to the 
Unicode Consortium, which governs the introduction of new emojis. “Diversifying the options available helps fill a 
significant gap and provides a more inclusive experience for all.” In its proposal, Apple also noted that the emoji were 
developed with input from American Council of the Blind, the Cerebral Palsy Foundation, and the National Association of 
the Deaf, and emphasized, “this is not meant to be a comprehensive list of all possible depictions of disabilities, but to 
provide an initial starting point for greater representation for diversity within the emoji universe”. Anyone can propose new 
emojis. Each proposal wends its way through layers of committees before making it to your phone, and not all proposals 
are approved. Apple's has been accepted by the Unicode Emoji Subcommittee and will now move on to the next step, 
discussion and review by the Unicode Technical Committee.

The real-life Snow White didn't get her prince or her happy ending. The iconic fairy tale is said to be based on a 16th 
century noblewoman, Margarete von Waldeck, who lived in Bad Wildungen in Bavaria. Apparently, there was a mine 
there that used child labor. The conditions were so harsh that the child workers were disfigured and called “dwarfs” as 
insults. They were also offered “tainted fruits” for bad behavior. Margarete was sent to Spain, where she fell for a prince. 
But his family didn't approve so she was poisoned. It makes sense why the Disney version went in another direction.

To the Editor: Re “How Small-Town America Sees Guns,” by Robert Leonard (Op-Ed, March 17): I appreciated Robert 
Leonard’s framing the gunviolence issue from a small-town perspective. To understand the deep attachment to guns, and 
the view that violence is the result of bad choices by people who lack moral guidance, is helpful to gun control advocates 
like me. I think the bigger question, if we as a nation want to substantially reduce gun violence, is which can we more 
realistically control: people’s bad choices or their access to highly lethal weapons? In my professional experience as a 
psychiatrist, I find it exceedingly difficult to change people who are not motivated to change. Reducing access is the 
only realistic option.

about tidying up a post-party mess of dirty coffee cups and ashtrays, empty beer bottles, paintbrushes, candy wrappers 
and strewn newspapers. Yes, you guessed. It was an art installation, this time by the enfant terrible of British 
contemporary art, Damien Hirst, he of shark-in-formaldehyde and maggot-filled cow’s head fame.
