CONCEITOS NA ERA DA PRÉ-INTERNETCaros (as) alunos (as), 
 
Este material foi elaborado com o objetivo de te ajudar a adquirir 
conhecimentos sobre os seguintes conteúdos: Talking on the phone, 
personal calls, finishing the calling, answering about calling, 
expressions about calling, commercial and professional calling, past 
perfect, past perfect continuous.
Porquanto, por meio da aquisição deles você será capaz de 
conversar em inglês ao telefone; falar de uma ação que ocorreu no 
passado antes de outra ação ter ocorrido; descrever uma ação 
passada inacabada.

TALKING ON THE TELEPHONE - FALANDO AO TELEFONE
When you're in another country, you'll notice that the way people talk 
to each other on the telephone is propably different than it is in your 
own country. That's why it is good to learn the country's "telephone 
etiquette" so you can make your calls more easily and avoid any 
possible misunderstandings between you and the other person on 
the other end of the line.
- If you call someone, don't ask the person who answers the phone 
who he nor she is, unless you first tell that person who you are and 
who you wish to speak to. It may sound offensive for who is hanging 
the phone on other end of the line, especially if the caller had not 
identified himself first.
- The person you're calling will answer the phone by saying hello (or 
just yeah? if the person's in a bad mood). You are then expected to 
state who you wish to speak to and identify yourself.
"I'd like to speak to Steve. This is his friend Cynthia from Brazil"
If you don't identify yourself, the person at the other end of the line 
will probably ask who you are. This might be because people are 
inundated daily by salespeople, prank callers, and all sorts of other 
unwanted calls. They want to make sure that you're not one of them 
(or, for that matter, their mother-in-law, boss, or landlord).
After you have identified yourself, the person on the other end will 
propably say something like this:

"Just a minute, I'll go see if he/she is there."
"Hang on (hold on) a second (sec), please."
"Yes, I'll go call him/her. One second (sec)."
If the person you want to speak to is not there, you may be asked if 
you wanted leave a message, that is, where and when you can be 
reached and why you called. Here's an example.
- Hi. This is Cynthia, is Steve there?
- No. he's not. Do you want to leave a message?
- Yes, just tell him I'll be at home tonight if he wants to get together.

Quando você estiver em outro país, irá perceber que a maneira como 
as pessoas falam ao telefone é provavelmente diferente da maneira 
de falar ao telefone em seu país. Esta é a razão pela qual é bom 
aprender a "etiqueta ao telefone" do país em questão, para que você

FINISHING THE CALLING - TERMINANDO A LIGAÇÃO 
Leia a seguir o texto em inglês e logo abaixo a tradução para 
português.
If you made a mistake and dialed the wrong telephone number, the 
person you're talking to might say something like this:
- Sorry, I'm afraid you have the wrong number
or
- I'm sorry, but there is no one here by that name.
In that case, just say I'm sorry and try dialing the number you want 
again. Don't ask if you've dialed a certain number and especially don't 
ask WHICH number you've dialed. This is considered offensive and 
even provocative since you can easily obtain the person address by 
having just a phone number (and robe the house or make obscene 
phone calls etc.).
Assuming now that you've succeeded in dialing the right number and 
have spoken to the right person, you can end the conversation in a 
number of ways.
The most common thing to say is bye-bye or just bye (not good-bye, 
which is commonly used when you're speaking to someone in 
person but sound rather abrupt on the telephone). You can then say 
something like: see you later; take it easy; take care...
As we mentioned previously and as you may note, americans and 
britons are not openly affectionate people, and sending kisses and 
hugs over the phone is quite strange to them, especially to the men. 
With this in mind it's propably better to keep your closing comments 
as simple, brief and non-intimate as possible.

alguém pessoalmente, mas ao telefone parece grosseiro. Você pode 
então falar algo como: see you later (até mais), take it easy, take care 
(se cuida)...
Conforme mencionamos anteriormente e como você deve ter 
observado, os americanos e britânicos não demonstram 
abertamente afeição, e mandar beijos e abraços pelo telefone é 
bastante estranho para eles, especialmente para os homens. Com 
isto em mente, talvez seja melhor tornar suas finalizações os mais 
simples, breves e impessoais possível.

Lembre-se! Em inglês não há nada semelhante a "um abraço" ou "um 
beijo", como costumamos no português nos despedir ao telefone de 
quem conhecemos. Um simples See you ou Take care é suficiente 
nessas horas. Da mesma maneira, não há equivalente em inglês 
para "De onde fala?". Outra coisa é que o costume de pontuar a 
conversa com "eh", "ahan" e sons parecidos para mostrar que você 
está ouvindo fica muito estranho em inglês. Em geral, a despedida ao 
telefone em inglês é de fato muito breve.

READING COMPREHENSION – TELEPHONES
Who Invented the First Telephone?
Did you know that there are more telephones in the 
world than there are people? Cell phones alone add 
up to more than 6 billion (there are over 7 billion 
people in the world)! It’s hard to imagine a world 
without the telephone, and the person we have to 
thank for the telephone is Alexander Graham Bell, 
who invented it in 1876. 
Alexander was born on March 3, 1847 in Edinburgh, Scotland. As a 
young boy, he was very talented in music, poetry and art, and when 
he was only 12 years old, he began inventing things. Also, when he 
was 12, his mother began to lose her hearing and was later to 
become completely deaf. This greatly affected Alexander, who 
became very interested in the scientific study of sound and the 
human voice.
In 1870, at the age of 23, Alexander moved to Canada with his 
parents where theybought a farm in the province of Ontario. It was 
there that he built a small workshop to continue his experiments in 
sound. In 1871, Alexander moved to Boston, in the United States, to 
teach deaf students, people who could not hear, how to 
communicate. One of his students was Helen Keller who was unable 
to see, hear or speak. Starting from 1873, he began to teach less and 
focus his energy on experiments with sound. On March 10, 1876, 
while working on his invention, Mr. Bell spoke the first words ever into 
a telephone: “Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you,” when he had 
a small accident in his laboratory. The first telephone, a machine that 
was able to carry the human voice over long distances, had been 
invented. By 1886, over 150,000 people in the United States owned 
one, and our world would never be the same again. Alexander 
Graham Bell died in Canada in 1922.

PAST PERFECT
O past perfect é o tempo verbal utilizado para exprimir ações que 
ocorreram no passado, de maneira muito precisa, ou antes de outra 
ação passada.
When I arrived at the station, the bus had already left.
formação
O past perfect é formado por had (´d) + o particípio passado do 
verbo principal. Observe os exemplos nas formas afirmativa, 
negativa e interrogativa:
After he had read the newspaper, my father left home.
As she hadn´t studied for the test, she failed.
Had you already seen that movie?
O particípio dos verbos em inglês pode ser regular ou irregular. Nos 
verbos regulares é acrescentado apenas a partícula – d, – ed ou – ied. Já 
os verbos irregulares têm uma escrita própria para cada um. Há uma 
longa lista dos verbos irregulares em inglês.
Quando usar o Past perfect?
O past perfect indica um momento anterior ao recente passado. Ele 
é usado para deixar claro com exatidão um evento que aconteceu 
antes de outro no passado.
É comum o uso de alguns advérbios para acompanhar o tempo 
verbal mencionado:

When – quando; 
Already – já; 
Never – nunca;
Just – há pouco, agora mesmo;
After – depois; 
Ever – já, alguma vez; 
Before – antes; 
By the time – até o momento.
 
ALREADY, YET, EVER e NEVER são utilizados com frequência no PAST PERFECT 
para enfatizar o evento que ocorreu primeiro.
Jane had already been to Paris when they went to France last year. 
(Jane já tinha ido a Paris quando eles foram à França ano 
passado).
I listened to Beatles this morning. I had never listened to them 
before. (Eu escutei Beatles esta manhã. Eu nunca tinha escutado 
eles antes).
Veja alguns exemplos do uso do past perfect quando um evento 
ocorre antes do outro:
Paul had gone out When John arrived in the office. (Paul tinha saído 
quando John chegou no escritório).
Ethan had saved his document before the computer crashed). 
(Ethan tinha salvo seu documento antes do computador quebrar).

andamento anteriormente a um determinado instante, evento ou 
afirmação.
I arrive home very tired. I had been working hard.
O past perfect continuous é formado por had been + forma –ing do 
verbo principal. Observe a forma negativa e interrogativa:
I hadn't been working hard.
Had you been working hard?
Pode-se usar o past perfect continuous para expressar a duração de 
uma ação ou evento que ocorreu antes de outro.
They had been living in the new house for 3 months when they 
decided to move again.
I had been walking for half an hour when a taxi finally passed.
