AI in the Workplace In recent months, ChatGPT has created a buzz. For those who aren’t in the loop, ChatGPT is an AI language learning model – or in simpler words, a computer program that can chat over text. It’s more sophisticated than your average AI; it can answer complex questions, write a high school English paper, compose song lyrics, and even create code. The arrival of ChatGPT has left many workers worried for their job security. AIs like ChatGPT are likely to take over jobs in accounting, healthcare, factories and transport: the AI can complete many repetitive tasks, and learn to do new ones. This has left many human workers worried that their current jobs will become unnecessary. There are many tasks that machines can do better than humans: they have better memories, can do maths accurately, as well as work with larger datasets. But there are some tasks that are much harder for machines to do, such as problem-solving, complex decision-making, or leading a human team. ChatGPT only has access to information from 2021 and before, meaning that it cannot answer simple questions about who won last night’s sports game, or summarise a recent event. It also still gets questions wrong frequently, failing at basic maths or producing illogical answers. Some are nervous about AI’s increasing role in the workplace, while others are encouraging workers to embrace change and learn to use AI as a work tool, just like how we currently use spreadsheets and calendar scheduling. Regardless of what happens, it seems we can’t outsmart AI – so we might as well try and get its help. Disclaimers: This resource has been made for the purpose of teaching English language learners. We know that students can be learning English in many different places, in many different ways and at age, so we try to keep these resources as general as possible. There are many acronyms associated with English language teaching. These include (but are not limited to) ELT, TEFL, EFL, ELL, EAL and ESOL. While the term ESL may not fully represent the linguistic backgrounds of all students, it is the most widely recognised term for English language teaching globally. Therefore, we use the term ‘ESL’ in the names of our resources to make them easy to find but they are suitable for any student learning to speak English.
