It was originated

in the Afro-Brazilians communities of Rio, in the

early 20th century. Samba is considered one of the

most important cultural phenomena in Brazil. It is

included in the Portuguese language at least since

the 19th century, and the word “samba” was

originally used to designate a “popular dance”. Over

time, its meaning has been extended to a “batuque-

like circle dance”, a dance style and also to a “music

genre”.

Reading: Music facts

30

6

Blues is a music genre and musical form

which was originated in the Deep South of

the United States around the 1860s by

African-Americans. Spirituals, shouts, chants,

and rhymed simple narrative ballads were

incorporated to blues. The blues form is

characterized by a pattern. Many elements

can be traced back to the music of Africa.

Reading: Music facts

5

6

4

30

7

GooseFrol/Shutterstock

30

8

Active voice

7

8

5

30

9

When the subject of a sentence performs the

verb’s action:

Monkeys like bananas.

The man counted the score.

The dog is chasing the cat.

Active voice

30

10

Follows the order subject, verb, and object:

Sarah studied English.

Focus on who does the action (Sarah).

Active voice

9

10

6

30

11

Passive Voice

30

12

In the passive voice, the object of the active

verb becomes the subject of the passive

verb:

Cats chase mice.
