Inglês Avançado

19. Past simple and Past continuous

Aula

19

Q uando queremos falar duas coisas que

ocorreram no mesmo período de tempo no

passado, podemos usar past continuous ou past

simple.

Exemplo:

Mary was reading to the children while they

were in bed.

(Mary estava lendo para as crianças enquanto

elas estavam na cama.)

Mary washed up her hands.

(Maria lavou as mãos.)

O uso do past continuous enfatiza que o

evento ou atividade estavam em andamento

durante o período passado.

Exemplo:

When I was learning, everything seemed

very interesting.

(Quando eu estava aprendendo, tudo parecia

muito interessante.)

When I learned to cook I was living with my

parents.

(Quando aprendi a cozinhar, morava com

meus pais.)

Quando queremos falar de dois ou mais

eventos que foram concluídos no passado,

usamos o passado simples, e não o passado

contínuo.

Exemplo:

He got up when the alarm clock went off.

(Ele levantou-se quando o despertador tocou.)

Normalmente, usamos o past simple ao

invés do past continuous para falar sobre ações

repetidas no passado:

Exemplo:

I went to the USA three times last year.

(Eu fui aos EUA três vezes no ano passado.)

Did you drive past her house every day?

continuous, principalmente no inglês falado,

quando queremos enfatizar que ações repetidas

continuaram no passado por um período limitado

de tempo.

Exemplo:

When Clark was in the hospital, they were

visiting him twice a day.

(Quando Clark estava no hospital, eles o

visitavam duas vezes por dia.)

I have started to walk to lose weight before

the race, I wasn’t eating any biscuits for weeks.

Exemplo:

When Clark was in the hospital, they

visited him twice a day.

(Quando Clark estava no hospital, eles o

visitaram duas vezes por dia.)

I have started to walk to lose weight before

the race, I didn’t eat any biscuits for weeks.

Podemos usar frequentemente o simple

evento pode interromper a situação, ou o

acontecimento enquanto a ação estava em

andamento.

Exemplo:

Jessica dropped her bag while she was

getting into her car.

(Jessica deixou cair sua bolsa enquanto ela

estava entrando em seu carro.)

He was shaking with anger as she left the

hotel.

do hotel.)

Exemplo:

We were meaning to call in and see you, but

Erica wasn’t feeling well.

19.1.
