This marks the first time a Brazilian actress has received the award
Brazilian cinema is celebrating a
historic milestone as actress
Fernanda Torres received the
Golden Globe Award for Best
Actress in the Drama category
on Sunday (Jan. 5) in Los
Angeles, USA.

The award, the first ever given to
a Brazilian actress, honors
Fernanda Torres’s performance
in the film “I’m Still Here”. In the
production, she plays Eunice
Paiva, a lawyer and the widow of
Rubens Paiva, a federal representative who was murdered by the military dictatorship in 1971.

Torres competed against Hollywood stars such as Nicole Kidman, Angelina Jolie, Tilda Swinton, Pamela
Anderson, and Kate Winslet.

Twenty-five years ago, Fernanda Montenegro, the mother of Fernanda Torres, was nominated in the
same category for her performance in “Central Station”. Although she did not win, the film earned the
Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film.

“This award is proof that art endures, even through the difficult times Eunice Paiva faced and the many
challenges the world grapples with today. This film makes us reflect on how to persevere in times like
these. To my mother, my family, my children, and everyone, thank you so much, and thank you to the
Golden Globes,” said Torres during her acceptance speech.

Both “I’m Still Here” and “Central Station” were directed by filmmaker Walter Salles.

This year, the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film was awarded to the French production Emilia Pérez.
