The Tell-Tale Heart – Edgar Allan Poe (Simplified Version) 
I am not mad. People think I am, but I can hear things no one else can hear. I can hear the heartbeat of a man through 
the walls. Is that madness? No—it is a sign of a sharp mind! 
There was an old man who lived in the same house as me. I loved him. He never hurt me. But his eye—his vulture 
eye—it was cold, pale blue, and it made my blood run cold. I had to get rid of that eye forever. 
Every night, at midnight, I opened his door slowly. I didn’t want to wake him. I wanted to look at his eye. But every 
night, the eye was closed, and I could not do it. 
Then, on the eighth night, something changed. When I opened the door, the old man heard me. He sat up in bed, 
afraid. I stood very still. I knew he was awake. I waited for a long time. 
Then I saw it—the eye was open! That horrible eye! I couldn’t take it anymore. I ran into the room and killed him. I 
hid the body under the floor. 
The police came because someone heard a noise. I was calm. I smiled. I showed them the whole house. I even 
brought chairs and asked them to sit down. I talked and joked with them. 
But then, I started to hear something. A sound. A soft sound. It was the heartbeat! It was getting louder and louder. I 
couldn’t stand it. Why couldn’t they hear it? 
I felt my head burning. My heart was racing. I thought they were laughing at me. I had to stop the sound. 
"Yes! I did it!" I screamed. "It’s under the floor! The heart is still beating!"
