The vessel suddenly made Brazil the preeminent maritime power in the Western Hemisphere-a fact that caused much concern in Washington, D.C. (The disparity between the U.S. and the Brazilian navies became even more pronounced two years later, with the launch- ing of another English-built Bra- zilian ironclad, the Aquidabã.) By the end of WWI, the Germans had only de- ployed 18 tanks.
