 Casey at the Bat
PART 1
EMMA’S OFFICE—LATE AFTERNOON
Rebecca enters Emma’s office and puts the bats against the wall. Emma is in her office.
EMMA Do you still want the job?
REBECCA I’d love it, Mrs. Washington.
EMMA Call me Emma. You’re hired.
REBECCA (pleased) Thank you.
EMMA Sure, no problem. (handing her a set of forms) Look, you’ll need to fill these out
these forms and bring them in tomorrow.
REBECCA No problem...
EMMA (pointing to form) And you’ll have to say whether you’re an American citizen, a
permanent resident, or if you have a work permit.
REBECCA I’m a citizen.
EMMA Oh, and you’ll need to bring in some identification. Do you have a passport or
something? (continuing) A birth certificate…uh, let’s see. . . a Social Security
card?
REBECCA Oh, I have a Social Security card and a driver’s license too.
EMMA As long as it’s a photo license. You’ll need that or a state I.D. card.
REBECCA I have a photo license. It’s from Massachusetts.
EMMA That’s fine. Lemme see, what else? Oh… have you ever been convicted of a
felony?
REBECCA Not recently. . . Just kidding.
EMMA OK. Well, if there’s anything else, we’ll deal with it tomorrow. You need to be
here at two-thirty. The children arrive at three o’clock. . . sharp.
Congratulations, Miss Casey. Welcome aboard.
AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM
Most of the kids are gone. Only Alex is left. Rebecca comes out of the school.
REBECCA Alex, who’s picking you up?
ALEX My dad. How come you have books?
REBECCA I go to school, too. I have a lot of homework tonight.
ALEX	I have a big test tomorrow.
REBECCA Uh, oh. What’s it on?
ALEX Spelling.
REBECCA Do you want me to help you study. . . while you’re waiting for your dad?
ALEX OK.
Alex hands the book with the spelling words to Rebecca. She helps him spell two words.
REBECCA ‘Island.’
ALEX That’s easy. ‘I-S-L-A-N-D.’
REBECCA Right. ‘Medicine.’
ALEX ‘M-E-D-E-’ I mean, ‘M-E-D-I-C-I-N-E.’
REBECCA Good!
ALEX What do you study in school?
REBECCA Piano, music theory, composing on computer. . . stuff like that.
Ramón walks up to where they are sitting.
RAMON Hi, pal.
ALEX Hi, Dad.
RAMON (to Rebecca) How’d it go?
REBECCA I got the job! Thanks for telling me about it.
RAMON You’re welcome.
ALEX Dad, can we give Miss Casey a ride home?
RAMON Sure.
REBECCA Oh, that’s OK. I can take the bus.
RAMON No, no, no, I insist, please. Car’s right over there.
REBECCA Thanks.
She returns Alex’s book to him.
REBECCA There you go.
Emma notices that Rebecca is getting into the car with Ramón and Alex. She wonders what this means.
INSIDE RAMON’S CAR
Rebecca sits in the front, next to Ramón, while Alex is in the back seat.
ALEX Dad, can I take guitar lessons with Miss Casey?
RAMON Not now, Alex. We’ll talk about it later. Sit back and buckle up.
Ramón sounds upset. Everyone becomes silent.
RAMON Sorry, I had a bad day.
REBECCA Listen, you don’t have to drive me home. Really, I can take the bus.
RAMON No, it’s no big deal.
PART 2
NANCY’S HOUSE, KITCHEN
Nancy comes into the kitchen with a bouquet of flowers.
NANCY Rebecca? These flowers just arrived for you.
REBECCA For me? Who are they from?
NANCY I don’t know. What does the card say?
Rebecca takes the card, opens it, and reads it.
REBECCA ‘Save Saturday for me! Something big is happening. Alberto.’
Nancy is surprised. Rebecca looks at the flowers.
REBECCA How beautiful...
NANCY Yes, they’re lovely.
REBECCA Guess we’ll put ‘em in water.
REBECCA’S ROOM—THE NEXT MORNING
Rebecca gets up and goes to the table where she put the flowers from Alberto. She reads the card again, and
she smells the flowers.
THE CASEY APARTMENT IN BOSTON—NIGHT
The phone is ringing. Dad answers. He does not look well.
DAD Hello...?
NANCY’S HOUSE, KITCHEN—NIGHT
REBECCA Hi, Dad. It’s me...
DAD Oh, Rebecca, how are ya?
REBECCA Oh, I’m fine. How are you?...
DAD Never been better.
REBECCA Good. I’m so glad to hear that.
DAD Kevin and I are getting along just fine. Uh… he got a raise at work.
REBECCA He got a raise, already? Good for him.
DAD So, how are things out there? I bet you miss your old room...
REBECCA Oh, my room out here is nice...
DAD But the people are different, right, not like Boston.
REBECCA No…everyone here’s been great. The people in the house are very interesting...
DAD Yeah, I bet. . . (starts coughing)
REBECCA Are you all right?
DAD (trying to recover) Like I said, I’m fine. Just a frog in my throat. So how’s school?
REBECCA School? It’s pretty tough, Dad. It’s a lot of work.
SAN FRANCISCO COLLEGE OF MUSIC, CLASSROOM—MORNING
PROFESSOR THOMAS Bill, I understand that you already have some experience with this instrument. So, I’d like to ask you to demonstrate for us right now.
Bill begins to play a tune on his guitar.
PROFESSOR THOMAS OK, Bill, thank you very much. So, Rebecca, you’ve had some experience with this already. C’mon, why don’t you show us what you’ve got.
REBECCA OK. Here goes.
Rebecca begins to play “Travelin’ Blues.” The professor listens, concentrating on her playing.
PROFESSOR THOMAS It’s coming. It’s getting better. I think you just need to work on that a
little bit more.
REBECCA OK.
AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM—AFTERNOON
It’s Rebecca’s first day of work at the program. She is on the baseball field.
REBECCA OK, watch me. You’re gonna keep your eye on the ball, then get your body iiz behind the glove, and scoop it up like this. OK?
Rebecca demonstrates how to field a ball. A girl hits a ball, and it rolls in front of Rebecca. Rebecca picks it up.
REBECCA And then bobble the ball, so it won’t get past you.
ALEX Wow, Miss Casey. You’re pretty good!
REBECCA They used to call me ‘Mighty Casey.’ Do you know the poem, ‘Casey at the Bat’?
They shake their heads “no.”
REBECCA It’s a famous poem about baseball. Casey’s team lost because he struck out. Let’s
see. . . I used to know this really well...
	Somewhere the sun is shining,
	Somewhere the children shout,
But there is no joy in Mudville—,
	Mighty Casey has struck out.
ALEX	Hey, he has the same name as you.
REBECCA Right. We Caseys are baseball legends. Do you wanna try, Alicia? (The girl nods
“yes.”) OK, here you go. (Alicia gets the ball.) Nice, Alicia. That’s it. (turns to Alex) You
wanna try Alex? (He takes his position.) OK, remember, keep your eye on the ball.
Alex tries it and the ball goes past him.
REBECCA That’s OK, you just need a little practice. Wanna try again?
ALEX OK.
This time he gets the ball.
REBECCA Nice going!
PART 3
AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM
A short time later, the students are playing a baseball game. Emma talks with Rebecca.
EMMA Congratulations. You’re doing a splendid job. Keep up the good work.
REBECCA I try to remember what interested me at their age. I liked to do things, not stand
around and watch.
EMMA How did you get so good at sports?
REBECCA My mother died when I was young, so I spent a lot of time with my dad, a real
sports fan. We used to play ball a lot, and he’d coach me in the park.
EMMA Well, it comes in handy here.
REBECCA OK, everybody come over here...
The children gather around Rebecca.
Away from the children, Emma and Ramón talk.
EMMA Thanks for telling Rebecca about the opening here. I think she’ll workout just fine.
RAMON From what Alex tells me, she really understands kids.
EMMA It certainly looks that way.
RAMON Alex wants to take guitar lessons with her. I’m thinking about setting it up.
EMMA That’s a great idea. I’m sure she’ll be good at that, too. . . And I know she needs
the money.
Alex is at bat. He gets a hit.
EMMA All right! All right!
Alex and Ramón are walking and talking after the game.
RAMON That was a nice hit. I saw that. It was great.
ALEX Did you see the catch I made?
RAMON No, I got here a little late. How do you like your new coach?
ALEX Pretty good. . . Can we get an ice cream, Dad?
RAMON OK. . . Do you still want to take guitar lessons with Miss Casey? (He looks around
for her.)
ALEX	That’d he great. Hey, Dad, do you know ‘Casey at the Bat’?
RAMON Uh. . . the poem?
ALEX Yeah. Miss Casey recited the poem for us today.
(reciting in a low voice)
‘Cause mighty Casey has struck out..
(back to normal) She and mighty Casey are baseball legends.
Ramon smiles. Now Ramon sees Rebecca walk down the stairs and head toward the street.
RAMON There she is. Wait here. I’ll go ask her about the guitar lessons.
But before he can go over to her, she greets someone getting out of a familiar car. It’s Alberto. Alberto and
Rebecca do not see Ramón. They hug. Rebecca gets in the car, as does Alberto.
Ramón is now joined by Alex.
ALEX Miss Casey knows Uncle Alberto?
RAMON Yes, they’re…friends. Oh well, I’ll talk to her another time. Come on, slugger, I
think I’ll have some ice cream, too.
Alex and Ramón walk toward the car.
ALBERTO’S CAR
Alberto opens the door for Rebecca and she gets into the car.
REBECCA Thank you very much for the flowers! They’re beautiful!
ALBERTO You’re welcome.
Alberto gets in the car.
ALBERTO So, are you free Saturday?
REBECCA What’s the surprise?
ALBERTO There’s a gallery opening I’d like to take you to.
REBECCA I’d love to go. . . But I am swamped with homework.
ALBERTO I’ll pick you up at four and have you home by eight. How’s that?
REBECCA That sounds fine. This probably sounds strange to you, but I’ve never been to a
gallery opening before. What’s it like?
ALBERTO All you have to do is stand around, um. . . look at the art, schmooze a little,
drink wine, eat tiny sandwiches. And there’s usually good people-watching.
REBECCA	Well, what should I wear?
ALBERTO Well, people will be sort of dressed up.
REBECCA Oh. . . I don’t have anything dressy...
ALBERTO No, no, no. Don’t worry. You’ll—you’ll be fine.. . and you’ll he pleasantly
	surprised!
REBECCA I’m sure I will.
