Recently, 48 You have taken away one of our family members, Patrick.. . But, in return, You have 49 brought us Kevin and Rebecca. Thank You for reuniting our family and for this delicious 50 meal we are about to share with our grandchildren and our children. Amen. 51 There are murmurs of approval. 52 REBECCA I’d also like to say a word of thanks. PART 2 69 FARMHOUSE 70 The family is sitting together. 71 PEGGY Anne tells me that you’re going to the San Francisco College of Music. 72 REBECCA I was. . . until my father passed away. 73 ANNE Well, now you can go ahead with your plans. 74 PEGGY So, you’re a musician? 75 REBECCA I really hope to write music and, maybe, perform. 76 PEGGY (to Anne) So, Anne, do we have a star in the family? 77 ANNE We might. But I’ve never heard Rebecca sing. (addressing Rebecca) But Brendan tells me 78 you have a beautiful voice. Would you sing for us? 79 PEGGY Oh, please do. 80 With a little persuasion, Rebecca agrees and goes to get her guitar. 81 REBECCA OK, lemme get my guitar. 82 She exits the room. Michael and Kevin are talking in another part of the room. 83 KEVIN Your dad tells me you teach a computer course. 84 MICHAEL Yeah. I teach at the community college in town. 85 KEVIN I’m into computers. 86 MICHAEL Good for you. It’s a great field—something new happening all the time. 87 KEVIN Oh, yeah, there’s a lot to learn. 88 MICHAEL Oh yeah. Hey, maybe you could enroll in my class... 89 KEVIN Why not? I’ll be staying here for a while. 90 MICHAEL Good. 91 Rebecca walks by with her guitar. 92 KEVIN Maybe she’ll sing... 93 MICHAEL Let’s go. 94 Rebecca enters and the room waits in anticipation. 95 REBECCA You’ll have to excuse me. I’m a little rusty. Uh. . . lemme see. . . I’ll sing an old folk 96 song, a Shaker song. It’s called’ ‘Tis a Gift to Be Simple.’ 97 She begins to play the guitar and then to sing. Anne and Brendan listen to Rebecca, surprised and impressed. The two 98 children are mesmerized. Kevin seems very proud of his sister’s singing. 99 REBECCA (singing) ‘Tis a gift to be simple, ‘tis a gift to be free, 100 ‘Tis a gift to come down where we ought to be. 101 And when we are in the place just right, 102 We’ll be in the valley of love and delight... 103 When true simplicity is gained, 104 To bow and to bend we will not be ashamed. 105 To turn, to turn will be our delight, 106 ‘TIl by turning, turning, we come ‘round right... 107 FARM, AT THE POND—DAY 108 Kevin and Rebecca are walking alone near the pond, saying goodbye. 109 KEVIN I talked to Michael about his computer classes. They start up again after the first of the 110 year. 111 REBECCA The insurance money should be in by that time. You’ll have no trouble paying for the 112 course. 113 KEVIN Yeah. Kind of hard to imagine, huh? Me being on a farm... 114 REBECCA You seem to like it... 115 KEVIN I do... it’s kind of weird. FARMHOUSE BARN--DAY 117 They walk near the barn. 118 REBECCA It’s been quite a year. 119 KEVIN Yeah. I had a dream about Dad. 120 REBECCA Oh? 121 KEVIN I was this little kid... and I was holding onto this blanket... 122 REBECCA You had a blanket . . . You carried it around with you all the time... You called it your 123 ‘brankie.’ 124 KEVIN I don’t remember. 125 REBECCA Mom used to use all kinds of tricks to pry it away from you so she could wash it. 126 KEVIN I don’t remember it at all. 127 FARMHOUSE BARN 128 Kevin rolls something into the barn. They enter. Rebecca waits in the doorway. 129 REBECCA It all slips away so fast.. . . the memories... 130 KEVIN I guess so... 131 REBECCA Promise me you’ll take care of yourself... 132 KEVIN Hey, Sis... I’m not a kid anymore. 133 REBECCA I’m sorry. 134 Rebecca talks quietly but with intensity to her brother, realizing she is about to leave. 135 REBECCA I’ll call you every day. We’ll talk. 136 KEVIN You don’t have to call me every day. 137 REBECCA All right. Every week. Hey, we’re all the family we got, right? 138 Kevin nods his head “yes.” 139 REBECCA We’ve got to try and remember everything.., the happy moments.... 140 We see scenes of happiertimes. We see Rebecca and her father at Kevin’s graduation, Thanksgiving dinner, Rebecca 141 and her new car. 142 REBECCA We have to remember the sad ones too. . . We have to remember it all... 143 We see scenes of sad times. We see Mr. Casey at the hospital, Kevin walking alone, Kevin standing up to Jack, the 144 funeral. 145 REBECCA I guess it’s time. 146 KEVIN I guess so. 147 REBECCA We never talk about Mom, do we? It’s like she never existed. Why? 148 KEVIN I don’t know. 149 REBECCA I remember everything. . . little things. I miss her combing my hair and the way she’d 150 tuck me in at night. The lullaby she wrote. 151 KEVIN I don’t remember any of it. 152 REBECCA You were too young. I tried. I even sang it to you when you were little. 153 Rebecca sings the first verse of a lullaby. 154 REBECCA (singing) Go to sleep, 155 The stars are shining brightly. Go to sleep, 156 The moon is on the rise... 157 KEVIN Maybe I remember the lullaby. 158 The two exchange warm smiles. 159 REBECCA Could I have a hug, please? 160 They hug in the barn. It’s the hug of two kids whose parent has died, leaving them alone. Somehow being together 161 makes it seem better. 162 KEVIN Have a terrific life in San Francisco. 163 REBECCA Thanks. I’ll give it a shot. PART 3 164 FARM—DAY 165 Rebecca gets into the truck with Brendan, and Anne and Kevin wave to her as the truck drives away. 166 ANNE Bye-bye. (to Brendan) You take care of her. . . Drive slowly. 167 The truck drives off. 168 ANNE Take care! 169 INSIDE THE PICKUP TRUCK 170 Brendan and Rebecca ride toward the airport. 171 BRENDAN So. . . are you excited about going back to San Francisco? 172 REBECCA Yes. 173 They ride for a moment in silence. 174 REBECCA Can I ask you something personal? 175 BRENDAN Sure. . . go ahead. 176 REBECCA Why didn’t you and my father talk for so many years? What happened? 177 BRENDAN Your father never told you? 178 Rebecca shakes her head “no.” Brendan stops the truck. 179 BRENDAN (looks at her closely) Are you sure you want to know? 180 REBECCA Yes. 181 BRENDAN Well. . . When we were young and both living in Boston, your father and I had a lot of 182 friends in common. . . When the Korean War broke out, I got drafted. But before I left, 183 I asked Patrick to keep an eye on my new girlfriend. And your father said he would 184 and he did. You know, absence doesn’t make the heart grow fonder. I got a letter from 185 each of them, saying they had fallen in love. 186 REBECCA It was my mother, wasn’t it? 187 Brendan nods “yes.” 188 BRENDAN Things never were the same between your father and me. . . They got married, and then 189 Lady Luck smiled and I met my Anne. You know the rest of story... 190 REBECCA Thank God you got to the hospital in time. 191 BRENDAN I’m sorry it took your father’s illness to bring us together. . . Well, now you know. 192 (He puts on his glasses.) We’d better get you on that plane to San Francisco. 193 We see the truck on the way to the airport.
