MODAL VERBS Modal verbs are auxiliary verbs, they give additional information about the function of the main verb that follows it and they have a great variety of communicative functions such as: Ability, possibility, permission, advice, obligation and prohibition. ABILITY I can drive I could swim when I was five PERMISSION Can I close the window? Could I leave early today, please? May I use your phone please? Might I suggest an idea? POSSIBILITY Smoking can cause cancer. It could rain tomorrow! It may rain tomorrow! She might come to your party ADVICE You should go to the doctor’s tomorrow You'd better revise your lessons OBLIGATION You must go to the doctor's tomorrow! I should be studying but I’m too tired. PROHIBITION You must not smoke in the hospital. You should never repeat that.
