Modal verbs São seguidos sempre por um verbo no infinitivo sem o”to”. Não são conjugados na terceira pessoa (não levam o “s”). Ex: I dance – Sally dances. I can dance – Sally can dance. Não precisa de auxiliar (do, does, did). I dance – I don’t dance – Do you dance? I can dance – I can’t dance – Can you dance? Can: expressa habilidade, possibilidade ou permissão. I can swim. I could swim if it wasn’t raining. Excuse me, can I come in? – Could I come in? Parents can be hard sometimes. May/might : possibilidade, probabilidade It might rain today. My mother may give me a new phone. May (permissão): May I come in? Might(possibilidade mais remota) Should / ought to – conselhos, sugestões You look pale. You ought to/ should rest a little. You are too tired. You shouldn’t work so much. Must / have to (obrigação, conclusão, conselho enfático) You must see a doctor. You have to see doctor. Must I see a doctor? Do I have to see a doctor? (ao “have to” não se aplicam as regras dos modals. É necessário auxiliar e conjugação na terceira pessoa) You must do your homework. She is yelling at everybody. She must be crazy. Mustn’t (proibição) You mustn’t use your cellphone inside the airplane. Don’t have to (ausência de obrigação) You don’t have to do all the job alone. Past modals Modal verb + have + past participle Could have = existência de condições passadas para fazer algo I could have gotten a good grade if I hadn’t lost my book. May have = possibilidade passada They may have finished the homework with help Might have = pequena possibilidade passada. I might have won the lottery last week. Should have = arrependimento, reprovação You should have talked to me. We shouldn’t have left so early. Must have= inferência sobre o passado. She never skips classes. She must have gotten ill. Would have= ação irreal / vontade passada Mark would have been lost if you hadn’t given him a map. I would have gone to your party if you had invited me. Os past modals também podem ser utilizados para fazer especulações sobre o passado: Must have: você tem praticamente certeza May have/might have: nem tanta certeza Can’t have/couldn’t have: acha impossível Exemplo: Situação: I got home and my door was open. Especulações: I must have forgotten to close it. (tenho praticamente certeza que foi isso) The lock may not have been working properly (acho que é uma possibilidade) A thief couldn’t have entered here, because the alarm was working. (você acha essa possiblidade impossível, ou muito remota)
