Sequências e séries de funções tiveram seu estudo impul- sionado a partir das contribuições de Newton (1642�1727) e Leibniz (1646�1716). Ambos desenvolveram representações de séries para funções. Usando métodos al- gébricos e geométricos, Newton calculou as séries para as funções trigonométricas sen(x) e cos(x) e para a função exponencial. Ele utilizou séries para desenvolver muitos resultados do Cálculo, tais como área, comprimento de arco e volumes. Para calcular áreas, por exemplo, ele, frequentemente, integrava uma função, primeira- mente expressando-a como uma série, e então integrando cada termo. A teoria de séries é uma ferramenta matemática importante na resolução de equações diferenciais e na obtenção de resultados em computação numérica. Para desenvolver a teoria de séries, estudam-se primeiro as chamadas sequências in�nitas. A palavra sequência é usualmente empregada para representar uma su- cessão em uma ordem determinada. Essa ordem pode ser de tamanho, de lógica, de ordem cronológica, entre outros. Em matemática é utilizada comumente para denotar uma sucessão de númeroscuja ordem é determinada por uma lei ou função. 1.2 Sequências numéricas Uma sequência numérica, ou simplesmente, uma sequência, é uma suces- são de números. O número a1 é chamado de primeiro termo, a2 é o segundo termo e, em geral, an é dito o n-ésimo termo. Observação 1.2.1. Em algumas ocasiões é conveniente denotar o primeiro termo da sequência por a0. Neste caso, a sequência tem a seguinte forma: a0, a1, a2, . . . , an, . . . . De�nição 1.2.1. Uma sequência de números reais (an) é uma função a : N → R que associa a cada número natural n um número real an. Observação 1.2.2. A notação (an) é muito utilizada para denotar uma sequência. Também pode-se escrever (a1, a2, a3, . . .), (an)n∈N, {an} ou simplesmente an. Pode-se também usar quaisquer outras letras, como por exemplo (bn) ou (cn). Exemplo 1.2.1. Iniciando em n = 1, escreva os cinco primeiros termos de cada uma das seguintes sequências cujos n-ésimos termos são representados por a) an = 3 + (−1)n b) bn = 2n 1 + n c) cn = n2 2n − 1 d) dn = 1 2n . CONVERGÊNCIA DE SEQUÊNCIAS NUMÉRICAS Observação 1.2.3. Nem sempre é possível representar o termo geral de uma sequên- cia por uma fórmula. Observe o exemplo da sequência dos números primos, 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, 31, 37, 41, 43, 47, 53, . . . . Não existe uma fórmula para o termo geral da sequência dos números primos, mas todos eles estão determinados e podem ser encontrados, por exemplo, pelo chamado �crivo de Erastóstenes�. 1.3 Convergência de sequências numéricas Sequências cujos termos se aproximam de um valor limite são ditas convergentes, enquanto que sequências que não possuem limites são ditas diver- gentes. De�nição 1.3.1. A sequência (an) converge para o número L se para todo número positivo � existe um número inteiro N tal que para todo n n > N ⇒ |an − L| < �. Se este número L não existe, dizemos que (an) diverge. Se uma sequência (an) converge para L, escreve-se lim n→+∞ an = L ou an → L quando n→ +∞, e chamamos L de limite da sequência. Observação 1.3.1. Observe que se uma sequência (an) converge para L, essa a�r- mação, geometricamente, signi�ca que para todo � > 0, existe um ponto na sequência a partir do qual todos os termos estão entre as retas y = L− � e y = L+ �. Exemplo 1.3.1. Considere a sequência cujo termo geral é an = n n+ 1 . Neste caso, lim n→+∞ an = 1. De fato, seja � > 0, observe que∣∣∣∣ nn+ 1 − 1 ∣∣∣∣ < �⇔ 1n+ 1 < �⇔ n > 1� − 1. A última desigualdade sugere escolher N como o primeiro natural maior do que 1 � −1. CALCULANDO LIMITES DE SEQUÊNCIAS 1.4 Calculando limites de sequências Como sequências são funções cujo domínio está restrito aos inteiros positivos, propriedades e teoremas para limites de funções estudadas durante o curso de Cálculo Diferencial possuem versões para sequências numéricas. A seguir estão enunciadasalgumas das propriedades para o cálculo de limites. Sejam (an) e (bn) sequências de números reais convergentes e tais que lim n→+∞ (an) = L, lim n→+∞ (bn) = M e L, M e c números reais. 1. Regra da soma: lim n→+∞ (an + bn) = L+M. 2. Regra da diferença: lim n→+∞ (an − bn) = L−M. 3. Regra do produto: lim n→+∞ (an · bn) = L ·M. 4. Regra da multiplicação por uma constante: lim n→+∞ (c · an) = c · L. 5. Regra do quociente: lim n→+∞ ( an bn ) = L M , se M 6= 0. Teorema 1.4.1. Teorema para convergência de sequências numéricas. a) Se |c| < 1, então lim n→+∞ cn = 0. b) Se |c| > 1, então (cn) diverge. O teorema a seguir nos permite aplicar a regra de L'Hôpital para encon- trar o limite de algumas sequências. Teorema 1.4.2. Suponha que f(x) seja uma função de�nida para todo x > n0 e que (an) seja uma sequência de números reais tal que an = f(n) para n > n0. Então, lim x→+∞ f(x) = L⇒ lim n→+∞ an = L. Demonstração: Suponha que lim x→+∞ f(x) = L. Então, para cada número positivo � existe um número M tal que para todo x, x > M ⇒ |f(x)− L| < �. Seja N um número inteiro maior que M e maior ou igual a n0. Determine o n-ésimo termo da sequência e veri�que se a mesma é convergente ou divergente. an = 2, 4 3 , 8 5 , 16 7 , 32 9 , . . . . Exercício 1.4.1. Iniciando em n = 1 represente gra�camente as sequências abaixo, analisando o comportamento de cada uma delas: a) (an) = (n+ 1) b) (bn) = (−1)n+1 c) (cn) = n n+ 1 d) (dn) = 1 + ( 1 2 )n . Teorema 1.4.3. (Teorema do Confronto ou Sanduíche para sequências) Se an ≤ bn ≤ cn para todo n > n0 e lim n→+∞ an = lim n→+∞ cn = L, então lim n→+∞ bn = L. Demonstração. A demonstração é análoga ao Teorema do Confronto para funções. Observação 1.4.1. Suprimindo-se de uma sequência (an) um número �nito de seus termos, o caráter da sequência, com n tendendo ao in�nito, não será alterado. Uma sequência (an) é denominada monótona decrescente se, para todo o número natural n, an ≥ an+1, isto é, a0 ≥ a1 ≥ a2 ≥ a3 ≥ . . . ≥ an ≥ . . .. Observação 1.5.1. As sequências crescentes e decrescentes são denominadas de sequências monótonas; caso contrário, são ditas não monótonas. Exemplo 1.5.1. Aplicando a desigualdade triangular, tem-se |an| = |an − L+ L| ≤ |an − L|+ |L| < 1 + |L|,∀n ≥ n0. (1.5.1) Os únicos termos da sequência (an), que possivelmente, não atendem à condição representada pela equação (1.5.1) são: a1, a2, a3, . . . , an0−1. Considerando o número real C como o maior entre todos os números 1+|L|, |a1|, |a2|, |a3|, . . . , |an0−1|, tem-se |an| < C, ∀n ∈ N. Observação 1.5.2. Pode-se veri�car que uma sequência não converge, mostrando que ela não é limitada. Entretanto a recíproca do teorema 1.5.1 não é verdadeira, isto é, existem sequências que são limitadas e divergentes. Por exemplo, a sequência cujo termo geral é an = (−1)n é limitada, pois |an| ≤ 1,∀n ∈ N, porém é divergente, uma vez que os valores desta sequência alternam de −1 para 1 inde�nidamente e portanto, não existe lim n→+∞ an. 1.5.2 Sequência monótona e limitada Teorema 1.5.2. Toda sequência (an) monótona e limitada é convergente. Demonstração. O teorema será demonstrado para o caso de sequências não-decrescentes, pois para o caso de sequências não-crescentes a demonstração é análoga. Seja (an) uma sequência não-decrescente e com termos positivos. Como a sequência é limitada, existe uma cota superior M tal que a1 ≤ a2 ≤ a3 ≤ . . . ≤ an ≤M . O conjunto dos números reais é completo, então existe um supremo L tal que a1 ≤ a2 ≤ a3 ≤ . . . ≤ an ≤ L. Para provar que a sequência converge para L, toma-se um número � > 0. Para � > 0, L − � < L, e portanto L − � não pode ser uma cota superior para a sequência. Consequentemente, existe pelo menos um an maior que L− �. Em outras palavras, L− � < aN para algum N inteiro positivo. Como (an) é não-decrescente, segue que aN < an para todo n > N .
