It was not until 1914 that a farm boy from Iowa formed the American Pop Corn Company and began to sell popcorn. Gradually, it became a national fad. In the 1920s it was introduced into the movie theaters. People wanted to eat it during the movie, but the theater managers discouraged the practice since the crunching distracted the other patrons. With the introduction of background music and sound for the movies, which drowned out the crunching, coupled with the need for cash during the Depression, the theater managers had a change of heart and permitted the establishment of lobby concessions. TEXTO 14 The Tourist Guide It is easy to imagine how important the English language is for a person who operates in the tourist sector – a professional or job that may require a university degree in Brazil. A simple example: how would it be possible for a travel agent to make a reservation at a hotel abroad either by phone or by e-mail, or even communicate with firms in other countries to agree on transportation or transfer of passengers, without using English idiom? People who work as tour guides, showing our country’s attractions to foreign tourists, also have to master this idiom. It is common that on outings to the pantanal (matogrossense) or to Rio, for example, the guide introduces him or herself to the group of tourists as someone who can speak Portuguese, English or Spanish. These languages are fundamental there, because of the large number of foreign visitors. However, it is not only in contacts abroad or with tourists that the English language is an essential communication tool for this professional. The person in this sector also depends on English to plan, organize and promote events such as parties, fairs, exhibitions and conferences. However, unfortunately, this reality seems to be far from being a fact in Brazil. But things are changing in Rio de Janeiro. The prefecture of the city has decided to fine those filthy citizens who do not respect its public spaces as a way to contributeto the city’s cleanliness. It made a campaign called “Lixo Zero” (“Zero Trash”), based on the Urban Cleanliness Law (municipal) number 3.273/2001. This measure started to be put in practice last week, on August 20. The fines will range from one hundred and fifty-seven to three thousand reais and their values will depend on the size of the wasted object. For the time being, the law will be applied only downtown but, in some days, all Rio will be benefited by it. The tickets will be emitted using the offenders CPF number (which is a Brazilian document) and they will receive an invoice through email. "Your friend is the man who knows all about you, and still likes you". "A real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out". Some friends come into our lives for just a short time. Others come and stay forever. Think about your closest friends. How long have you known each other? Some people say that their spouse or family member is their best friend. Others say they have known their closest friends for many years. And some great friends haven't known each other all that long, but knew right away that there was a connection, or bond, between them. Before that time, New Year's Day was celebrated on April 1st. Then a new calendar was introduced called the Gregorian calendar. January 1st became the first day of the year, but many people did not know about it. So those who continued to celebrate New Year's Day on April 1st were teased. They were called fools. Nowadays we play jokes on people on April 1st. For example, someone might put salt in the sugar container so another person could "accidentally" put it in their coffee. Or someone might change the time on another person's alarm clock so that person would unknowingly wake up earlier or later than planned. Or maybe a person would tell a lie to make someone else shocked. After we play the trick, we say "April Fool." Then the poor person realizes he was fooled. It is generally done in the spirit of fun and doesn't cause any real harm to anyone. Do you have any great jokes to play on anyone today? Try it out. Just don't forget to say "April Fool" when the other person begins looking a little confused. Questão nº 1 - True or False. 1. April Fool's Day started in 1908. ( )True ( )False 2. TEXTO 20 Catching a Cold Many people catch a cold in the springtime and/ or fall. It makes us wonder... if scientists can send a man to the moon, why can't they find a cure for the common cold. The answer is easy. There are literally hundreds of kinds cold viruses out there. You never know which one you will get, so there isn't a cure for each one. When a virus attacks your body, your body works hard to get rid of it. Blood rushes to your nose and brings congestion with it. You feel terrible because you can't breathe well, but your body is actually "eating" the virus. Your temperature rises and you get a fever, but the heat of your body is killing the virus. You also have a runny nose to stop the virus from getting to your cells. You may feel miserable, but actually your wonderful body is doing everything it can to kill the cold. Different people have different remedies for colds. In the United States and some other countries, for example, people might eat chicken soup to feel better. Some people take hot baths and drink warm liquids. Other people take medicines to stop the fever, congestion, and runny nose. There is one interesting thing to note- some scientists say taking medicines when you have a cold is actually bad for you. The virus stays in you longer because your body doesn't have a way to fight it and kill it. Bodies can do an amazing job on their own. There is a joke, however, on taking medicine when you have a cold. It goes like this: If takes about 1 week to get over a cold if you don't take medicine, but only 7 days to get over a cold if you take medicine. Questão nº 1 - True or False 1. Over 2,000 years ago people called the Celts lived in what is now Ireland, the UK, and parts of Northern France. November 1 was their New Year's Day. They believed that the night before the New Year (October 31) was a time when the living and the dead came together. More than a thousand years ago the Christian church named November 1 All Saints Day (also called All Hallows.) This was a special holy day to honor the saints and other people who died for their religion. The night before All Hallows was called Hallows Eve. Later the name was changed to Halloween. Like the Celts, the Europeans of that time also believed that the spirits of the dead would visit the earth on Halloween. They worried that evil spirits would cause problems or hurt them. So on that night people wore costumes that looked like ghosts or other evil creatures. They thought if they dressed like that, the spirits would think they were also dead and not harm them. The tradition of Halloween was carried to America by the immigrating Europeans. Some of the traditions changed a little, though. For example, on Halloween in Europe some people would carry lanterns made from turnips. In America, pumpkins were more common. So people began putting candles inside them and using them as lanterns. That is why you see Jack 'o lanterns today. These days Halloween is not usually considered a religious holiday. It is primarily a fun day for children. Children dress up in costumes like people did a thousand years ago. But instead of worrying about evil spirits, they go from house to house. They knock on doors and say "trick or treat." The owner of each house gives candy or something special to each trick or treater. Questão nº 1 - True or False. 1. The Celts thought the spirits of dead people returned to the earth on October 31st. He lived in New York City and learned the dry-goods business for several years. In 1853 he took his knowledge and his dreams to San Francisco (California., USA.) His dream to succeed came true over the next 20 years as he became a very successful businessman. Many of Levi Strauss' customers were cowboys and miners. They needed clothing that was strong and durable. Strauss found a special fabric from France that was comfortable and lasted a long time. It was called "serge de Nimes," which was later shortened to the word denim. Another man named Jacob Davis bought large amounts of the denim fabric from Levi Strauss. He was a tailor who made pants for hard-working men. One of his customers was continually tearing the pockets off his pants. So Jacob Davis decided to put rivets on certain parts of the pants to make them stronger. The customer loved the new pants so much that he told all his friends, and soon Jacob Davis was busy making lots of pants with rivets. Jacob Davis soon realized that using rivets was a great business idea, and he didn't want anybody to steal that idea. He decided that he would need to get a patent. But being a poor tailor, he didn't have enough money to pay for the patent. After thinking it over, he went to the businessman Levi Strauss and told him his idea. He said, "If you agree to pay for the patent, we will share the profits from the riveted pants." Levi Strauss did agree, and the new riveted pant business was called Levi Strauss and Company. Today Levi's jeans are more popular than ever, and Levi's name continues to live on. Questão nº 1 - True or False. 1. Levi Strauss was born in 1853. Her extraordinary efforts to revive Ptolemaic power through her forceful personality and political skill, and the romantic liaisons with prominent Romansthat this policy involved, have been the subject of much literature, including William Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra and George Bernard Shaw's Caesar and Cleopatra. The daughter of PTOLEMY XII, Cleopatra became joint ruler with her younger brother PTOLEMY XIII in 51 BC. Three years later they fought each other in a civil war, during which the Roman general POMPEY THE GREAT came to Egypt and was assassinated by Ptolemy. Julius CAESAR then invaded Egypt and defeated Ptolemy, who drowned in the Nile. Cleopatra married another brother, Ptolemy XIV, but she also became Caesar's mistress and followed him to Rome, where she stayed until his assassination (44 BC). Returning to Egypt, Cleopatra ruled with her son by Caesar, Ptolemy XV, called Caesarion, as joint king, Ptolemy XIV having been murdered on her orders. In 42 BC, when Mark ANTONY came to Egypt, she became his mistress. TEXTO 24 The Statue of Liberty One of the most famous monuments in the world, the Statue of Liberty, was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the United States on the centenary of American independence. It is a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886, designated as a National Monument in 1924 and restored for her centennial on July 4, 1986. Made in Paris by the French sculptor Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi, in collaboration with Gustave Eiffel (who was responsible for the steel framework). The statue is of a robed female figure representing Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom, who bears a torch and a tabula ansata – a tablet evoking the law – upon which is inscribed the date of the American Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776. A broken chain lies at her feet. Before it could be transported to the United States, a site had to be found for it and a pedestal had to be built. The site chosen was an island at the entrance of New York Harbor. By, 1884, a statue which was 151 feet tall had been erected in Paris. In order to transport the statue to America, the figure was disassembled into 350 pieces and packed in 214 crates . Four months later, it was reassembled on Bedloe’s Island (renamed Liberty Island in 1956). On October 28, 1886, the statue had been put together again and it was officially presented to the American people by Bartholdi. President Grover Cleveland dedicated the Statue of Liberty before thousands of spectators. Ever since, the great monument has been a symbol of liberty for the millions of people who have passed through New York Harbor to make their homes in America. Liberty Enlightening the World, the official name of the Statue of Liberty, was extensively restored in time for the spectacular centennial of American independence on 4 July 1986, for whom it symbolized the ideals of Washington and Lincoln.
