A generalized section through a layered basic intrusion shows a funnel-shaped structure, a marginal series, which is often not layered, a main layered series, the base of which generally contains whatever ores are present, and a roof series of more evolved pegmatoidal rocks. Steeply dipping marginal border series rocks on the pluton walls are shown with a fine pattern, upper border zone rocks on the pluton roof are shown with a coarse pattern. The upward thinning of LZa, LZc, and UZa and their absence from the upper border series is modified after the original schematic of McBirney (1989), though it seems realistic that these units also occur in the upper border series. They were doubtless difficult to map in the tremendously rugged terrain where they are exposed. The texture is named after a type of grass which grows in South Africa in the region where komatiites were first discovered.
